The 8th Annual CPMX Auction by Lyn Knight Currency Auctions

by Howard A. Daniel III

I subscribed to the first year of Lyn Knight's catalogs of world paper money because Joel Shafer was the manager of this new department, and because the first auction was going to contain Leo May's MPC collection. I received the catalog a couple of hours ago and had to sit down and write about it here for you because it is such a fantastic piece of work.

Besides Leo's collection, it has many, many other military pieces and plenty of excellent pieces from my Southeast Asia area. There is even a rare money order for my friends in The Postal Order Society, many United States and Confederate notes, a short snorter, and exonumia too from just about every era of United States history. If you are not attending the auction at the Chicago Paper Money Expo from February 28 to March 2, you can see the lots and bid online too at www.LynKnight.com. But I very highly recommend that you order the catalog, or even subscribe to their first year of them, via their web site and using a credit card. The catalog will find a permanent place in my library, and I am sure it will find one in your library too. Good hunting and good luck at winning some of the lots in this auction!!

More on Ceylon Fakes

By Trevor Wilkin

As I read Ski's column the WWII Ceylon fractional specimen, it was with a sense of deja vu - and guilt!

I was a victim in January / February 2001 - my defense for not advising fellow gramsters is that I only joined up about that time and was not aware of the many services the Gram offered such as alerting fellow Gramsters to pitfalls. Through e-bay, I obtained specimens of both the 25 cents & the 50 cents (P40 & 41).

The seller was an Australian e-bay dealer. I do not think he has ever taken a table at a show as a dealer (certainly not a major show), done a physical mailing list nor is a member of associations or societies. I was aware of him and he had bought off me in shows over the years, I thought as a collector. I can't recall the name right now but he hails from the Melbourne (Victoria) area.

The particular e-bay listing was of about 6-9 notes that contained several Cambodia Khymer Rouge notes, some cheap Laos or the like, plus the Ceylon 25 and 50 cents specimens from memory. As it was all one lot, individual estimates were not listed. The collective catalogue value was listed as being several hundred dollars worth although the starting price and the final price was not unreasonable, particularly given the Ceylon specimens. (Although as it later came to pass, his weighting of the value of the lot was the Khymer Rouge material.) It was a Dutch auction with maybe 10 lots the same. I was successful in obtaining 2 lots and like Larry eagerly awaited arrival.

The delivery arrived. My first warning sign was that I received a bonus of an extra Ceylon specimen per lot. No one likes being conned; so after reassuring my self that the items were not genuine - and to cover myself, obtaining an independent opinion from a colleague, I went to the seller. He came around very quickly and volunteered a refund after a little banter and after I convinced him that my interest in the lot was the Ceylon, not the Khymer Rouge notes - whose market had collapsed, were suspect themselves (but did have a pedigree with their Pick listing which is quite strong), and were readily available, for not much in Asia.

He claimed to have many pieces of the Ceylon specimens. Where he got them from, I do not know. In our conversation, he tended to regard them as a "joke" which is probably why I received the bonus and probably why they were not listed as a separate lot. They were certainly not described as suspect in the lot description. There was a reference to them, but it could have been oblique - I do not believe that they were touted as "great items."

As I said, the emphasis seems to have been on the Khymer Rouge items that really came out in our discussions. At the end of the day, I received a full refund and returned the lots. Certainly, after my discussion with him, he was in no doubt that they were fakes, at least in my mind.

It would be interesting to know when Larry's seller acquired them. It appears they came from the same source. If it was after say March 2001, there can little doubt that that the person, I dealt with must doubt their genuineness. If he continued to list them and to hold them out to be genuine, and this is how Larry's seller acquired them, then there is an issue here for all concerned including Larry's buyer who may also have a claim.

I trust this is of some assistance to Larry in obtaining a refund. It also goes to show the value of the Gram in alerting others. Maybe a mention also in the next edition of World War II Remembered that fake specimens are around. [Good idea Trevor, Larry, please mark that in your master copy!—Ed]

Editorial

----------------------------------------------

It was very exciting to receive the Knight-May catalog yesterday. I was fortunate to get to see a proof of it in Orlando at the FUN show; the finished catalog looks much better! It is a wonderful catalog with great material. It starts off with one of Leo’s replacements on the cover! The 471 $10 of course. Obviously, we have discussed the May collection many times and in depth. It is great, or better, but there is plenty of other material for military money collectors. Hopefully, someone will do a detailed review of this aspect for us.

I look forward to studying the catalog and attending the sale. You can be sure that we will have many more reports on this sale—before and after.

Mail Call

Dear Gram,

Just received the Lyn Knight catalog for the CPMX sale. Wow, it is possibly (likely) the best auction catalog of world paper money ever published in the US. I am very excited.

Steve Feller

Dear Readers,

I have just received John Pettit's new Bank Note Listing #1 2002. The 34 page catalog is a tour de force of great notes, with color photos of selected items on the inside cover. The USA MPC has only a few notes listed, but and I mean a BIG BUT, he has some FANTASTIC military issues. Austria 25 Schilling UNC at A$650; Fanning Island 1 pd gF A$725; German New Guinea WWI 5,10,250 Marks P.1b, 2b,4b; Many Germany WW2 POW notes, many Great Britain & India POW note; the SB plate note of Gilbert & Ellice Islands at A$7500. He will be attending CPMX in a few weeks. Go to his web site www.johnpettit.com and you can order the catalog.

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
