More on Kroner AMC!!

By Theo VanElmpt

I just came across another note in my files re AM Kroner which may - or may not - be of interest to someone. The notes were not actually printed by the BoE printing works themselves but were contracted out to Bradbury, who also made the designs for the unit notes which were later adapted into kroner.

The actual printing was ready on 16 May 1944. The notes were then shipped to BoE for safe keeping. On 5 October 1944 the WO was offered a number of good-over notes as follows:

25 oere 31,998 notes

1 kroner 34,300 notes

5 kroner 58,146 notes

10 kroner 29,374 notes

50 kroner 10,769 notes

100 kroner 45,473 notes

They were offered rounded down in '000s. The 10, 50 and 100 notes would be numberd:

10 D/21 000,001 to 029,000

50 D/11 000,001 to 010,000

100 D/2 335,001 to 380,000

The WO did not accept the offer because they had serious doubts that the notes would be used after all!! In the end some would be used but at the express wish of the US Army the use of Yellow-seal dollars and BMA notes was preferred.

Twelve sets of specimen notes were produced for the AM Kroner 3 sets were sent to the War Office in London 3 sets were sent to H.M. Treasury 6 sets were sent to SHAEF and the Danish Currency Section.

Show Report

By Robert Drake

Have just returned from the Cupertino, CA Coin Club Show. This was a local, small, club coin show. Friendly folks, snacks available, good parking, $2 entrance fee.

30 dealers with about 15 of those displaying paper money too. Mostly a coin show with few, if any supply dealers. I found 3 dealers displaying MPC. One dealer had 3 notes, I purchased a 692 20 in XF from him. Another had about a dozen tired notes, I was able to liberate a 521 $1 from that gentleman. My hero of the day was Ken Barr. Ken and I sealed another deal for the purchase of 9 notes. If you are interested in 472 $10s in better shape, 481 $10, 641 $5s, a 651 $10 in CU or 692 $10/$20s, give Ken a call or an email. Just read Fred's list for contact info.

This is a request to purchase some 651 $5s/$10s in CU. If you have some for sale, please email me, at forwebfootbob@earthlink.net.

Editorial

----------------------------------------------

Did you notice the shift in the stars? The change in the natural order of things?

If I do not finish a book or other major project on Saturday or Sunday, it is at least in the middle of the night when computer tech support of various kinds is not available and vendors of repair parts, supplies, and other necessities are not only closed, but probably not available for 24 or more hours. Schwan’s law is that computer problems only happen at the worst possible times (paraphrased from Murphy who was an incurable optimist).

I finished the MPC book at about the worst time for such problems. As part of the drill, I must provide a laser proof to the manufacturer for checking purposes. Among other things it takes a long time to print out a 400 page proof. You will not believe this.

Everything went well. After returning from the manufacturer, I moved to other things. When I tried to print something—the very first sheet after the book proof—the printer died, toner exhaustion! Ten sheets, heck, one sheet earlier would have caused a serious problem, because (you knew this), I did not have another spare. Frankly, I thought that the only reason that the toner did not run out was because I had a spare, but I was wrong on both counts.

Mail Call

----------------------------------------------

Editor,

I would like to thank Howard for the kind words about our catalog. As you all probably are aware that Fred Schwan wrote the MPC and Joel the world with me to do the other stuff.

My first love is National banknotes, personally, but I am in this business because I love being able to make collectors happy and make a good living doing it. Articles like this make us feel appreciated and hopefully many of you will be able to ad to your collections. The Memphis sale needs neat stuff to add to the group we already have which no doubt will include more from the Ruth Hill collection.

Thanks again,

Lyn

Dear Esteemed Editor, I was surfing through the WorldWideWeb today and looking for some information about the hometown of a collector/researcher in Australia. He lives in the suburb of Wooloowin in the city of Brisbane. I found something about WWII at one site and the following; The Headquarters for the US Army's 40th Coastal Artillery (CA) Brigade North-Eastern Anti-aircraft Artillery Command was possibly located in a concrete bunker that is still standing at Hudson Road at Wooloowin in Brisbane opposite the Wooloowin railway station. The bunker is 11.2 metres long by 8.6 metres wide with a wall thickness of 450 mm. The walls above ground level are also angled to assist with limiting bomb blast damage. Alternatively this bunker was a large air raid shelter for that area of Brisbane. The commanding officer of the 40th CA Brigade was Brigadier General Van Volkenburgh. Some Australian Anti-aircraft units were also put under the command of the 40th Coastal Artillery Brigade. The 1945 Military phone book for Brisbane shows the Headquarters for the 14th Anit-Aircraft Command under the command of Major General W.F. Marquat being located on the 8th Floor of AMP Building in Queen Street, Brisbane. There is no entry for the 40th CA Brigade.I am sending this letter to you in case anyone is researching any of the above units and can use the information.Howard A. Daniel III

Dear Gram,

I saw your plea for items to put in the auction. I eluded before that I would donate a flipper I picked up the last time over to England. Its enameled on the back of a Lincoln penny and shows a skeleton with a top hat riding a dropping bomb with 85th Bomber squadron on it underneath. Here is a chance to own the real thing! I could guess that a lot of them went down with their owners (since they had to be close by the person for a challenge) over Germany and there are not too many around. Do you want me to send it or just hang on to it till I get to the Fest?

Gary (Who has 4's) Hicks

Dear Editor,

Regarding the lost book mentioned in your editorial. The book company moved from Maryland to New Jersey last fall, so had not answered my emails for months while in transition. When they finally replied, they did not know what had happened--just that they had shipped the book per their original advice to me. A few days later, I got a call that they had located the package back at their new location. They had shipped the book to Port Clinton in August but UPS returned it as being undeliverable. There was nothing wrong with the address. I had them alter it a little and send it out again; this time it got through. Joe

Dear Joe,

Thanks for the story (and ESPECIALLY for finding the book).

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!

<P>Dear Gram,</P>
<P>I saw your plea for items to put in the auction. </P>
<P>Gary (Who has 4's) Hicks </P>
<P>Dear Editor,</P>
<P>Regarding the lost book mentioned in your editorial. Joe</P>
<P>Dear Joe,</P>
<P>Thanks for the story (and ESPECIALLY for finding the book).</P>

<P>Hot Contact List</P>
<P>Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.</P>
<P>Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.</P>
<P>We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!</P>
