Munich Out, Fest in—for Cummings

Well-known MPC fan, dealer, and (former?) collector Mike Cummings has canceled his planned business trip to Munich in order to attend MPCFest III! Cummings who has a shop in Lakeland, Florida says that he is looking forward to the event and will bring some goodies.

Cummings reservation pushes the Fest list to the 30 threshold. Fest I had 12 in attendance, Fest II had 24, with additional reservations expected, it might still be possible to top 40 for Fest III. Watch the Gram in the next few days for more Fest details.

Military Numismatics—there is no End

By Bill Murray

One never knows when or where one will find something of interest numismatically. An acquaintance of mine who lives in the retirement community in which I live, gave me a call the other day. He told me his next door neighbor, a retired Army doctor, Dr. Cesar A. Lopez, had an coin article in a magazine he thought might be of interest to me.
When I saw the cover of the magazine, MILITARY MEDICINE, I wondered, but the lead article in the January issue of this journal, dedicated to publishing scholarly, medical papers carried the title, "Militares Medici in Nummis Repraesentati: The Heritage of Military Medicine in Coins and Medals." MG John Pearn, former Surgeon General of the Australian Defence Force, prepared an interesting and well illustrated article. He states in his introductory paragraph, "Coins and commemorative medals form one prestigious repository of the history of military medicine."
While the material presented may be a far cry from, MPC, it seems to fit publication in the MPCGram, which claims, "Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics."
Pearn introduces his article with a general introduction to numismatics in general and especially as it contributes to historical record. Relating it to medicine, he documents references to Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health and her "Roman successor, Salus" as well as other ancient coin types. He tells us, "One classification of medical numismatics has grouped such medals and coins into several classes. In the context of medical numismatics, these can be characterized as four groups: (1) medals portraying military doctors; (2) medals highlighting the discipline of military health; (3) military medical coins; and (4) miscellaneous themes in military medicine."
The rest of MG Pearn's article discusses each of those groups and provides examples in prose with selected photographs.
As to be expected in an academic journal, Pearn cites meticulous references and many of those references most of which, though not all come from Australian and British sources intrigue enough to suggest future study by any interested U. S. numismatists. Interestingly, he did not cite Horatio Storrer's Medicina in Nummis.
I plan to communicate with MG Pearn in a week or ten days ( I want to do a little more homework first.), and if any Grammsters would like to provide me with queries to include in my communication to the general, you may email them to me at: billmur13@aol.com.

Editorial

----------------------------------------------

Last night about 11pm I was driving home when I received a phone call from a contributor to the new MPC book. He pointed out that the values listed in the book for a given item was something like: 400 700 950 100 2000 3000. On the one hand, I could not believe it. This is the type of error that I hate the most, one that is internally inconsistent and obvious (can something be obvious and subtle too? If so this is an example). After months of checking by the caller and others, he believed that this error had not been found. I told him that I hoped that it had, but I was far from certain. Of course the minute that I got home, I fired up the computer to check. It had not been found, nor corrected. Drat.

On the other hand, I should not have been surprised. The instant that it is too late to fix things is the most likely instant to find new corrections. In fact, it might not be too late, it might just be expensive to correct it. This is just the way that thing go in book publishing.

Mail Call

----------------------------------------------

Dear Gramsters,

Well, no sooner do I write a column on irradiated mail, then I receive the 12 Feb Coin World with a front page article about two silver certificates (worth $1500) that took three months to arrive and were obviously damaged in the mail. The notes were in grading service holders and further enclosed in the vendor’s holders. The holders were badly damaged by the radiation (toned brown, partially melted, wrinkled), and there is slight damage to the notes (the shipper conjectures that the double holders saved the notes). Since we do not know what chemicals are released from these holders when they are heated/irradiated, we cannot conclude that multiple holders are going to protect notes, nor that there are not going to be further effects on the notes that become evident years down the road. Now, in reference to Mike Cummings’ article about the Atami auction, I attended that sale only once (and bought some nice material), and I do not recall taking part in any karaoke. In fact, I can only remember doing karaoke once in my life, and it was not in a numismatic setting, but in a military setting. I don’t know what Herb Cook is remembering.

Joe

Dear Esteemed Editor,

There are two subjects in this letter to you. The first is about the item written by Joe Boling about the irradiated mail. Sometime last week I contact John Wilson, president of the ANA and requested that he take some action to have the ANA, dealers, suppliers and collectors get together and design "protection" for our "stuff" in the postal system. He immediately jumped on it and there is something in the works. If any of you have already had some irradiated "stuff", please contact John and tell him about the condition of it. This is a VERY serious problem for our "stuff" and we must create "protection" before it affects the rest of us outside the Washington DC and New York City areas. John's email address is "JohnANcyW@aol.com." Please contact him today!

The second subject is about the "undeliverable mail" for the MPCGram. After checking the email address and confirming in one or more ways that it is valid, I have found that the problem is our ISPs' computer code. There is apparently a "ton" of code that is ALWAYS being modified by the software writers and not all of the ISPs are updating their copies as fast as other ISPs. As a result, the "difference" in the code rejects emails coming from ISPs that do not match. When you have a "undeliverable mail" problem, contact your ISP and send them the email that is undeliverable and request that they research the problem. Sometimes when it is not their problem, they do not contact the receiving ISP, so you will have to "cc" the receiving ISP too. This is a pain in the you know what, but with the constant updating of the software code that ISPs need to be in business, we are going to see "undeliverable mail" for good email addresses.

Good luck,

Howard A. Daniel III

Dear Joe,

Thanks for the update. If you did not karaok at your daughter’s wedding, you should have.

Editor

Dear Editor:

You seem to be getting some respond to the FOR SALE listing. Would it be possible to move this item to under the EDITORIALS ?? This way, we do not have to keep scrolling thru the Calendar, MPC Events, Donors list, and HOT CONTACTS LISTS each gram.

Thanks,

ED

Dear Ed,

I must admit that at least one other person has made this suggestion. The bottom line is that the very reason that the "for sale" items are near the end it so that readers WILL scroll through the other items. However, we are always open to enhancements. On idea that comes to mind is to move the for sale items to various places so that readers really must look!

Now, how bout sending us some listings for sale (again)!

Editor

Dear Editor,

Joe Boling's commentary is 3 feet wide and I can't even print it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An in depth investigation on this problem should be a new Gramster Official's new Office of Authority duties. Of course you would volunteer for it and more dust would appear under the covert coverup Clinton carpet.

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!

<P>Dear Ed,</P>
<P>I must admit that at least one other person has made this suggestion. The bottom line is that the very reason that the "for sale" items are near the end it so that readers WILL scroll through the other items. However, we are always open to enhancements. On idea that comes to mind is to move the for sale items to various places so that readers really must look!</P>
<P>Now, how bout sending us some listings for sale (again)!</P>

<P>Dear Editor,</P>
<P>Joe Boling's commentary is 3 feet wide and I can't even print it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!</FONT> </P><FONT color=#0000ff>
<P>An in depth investigation on this problem should be a new Gramster Official's new Office of Authority duties. Of course you would volunteer for it and more dust would appear under the covert coverup Clinton carpet.</FONT> </P><FONT color=#0000ff>

<P>Hot Contact List</P>
<P>Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.</P>
<P>Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.</P>
<P>We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!</P>
