Valentines Day

By Larry "Ski" Smulczenski

I try to pick something topical or of current interest to write about in these weekly columns and since this is Valentines Day, I wanted to associate military money with candy or flowers or sweethearts or love or something like that. Last November when I said it was hard to find some note or subject to associate with Thanksgiving, believe me that was easy compared to looking for something to associate with Valentines. As usual, I went to World War II Remembered, and after leafing through it page by page, I found nothing. I slept on it last night, but nothing came to mind easily. This morning as I was getting dressed I glanced over on the desk where a couple of eBay lots that I had sold were waiting to be packaged and mailed. There it was. Three chits from Avenger Field at Sweetwater AFS, Texas. Yes, I know that's a stretch to associate Sweetwater with Sweetheart, but look guys, I'm at least half way there. If I had that kind of batting average in the majors, I'd be a star. After all, on the kind of wages our editor pays, you have to allow me a few liberties.

I have four sets of chits in my collection from Sweetwater AFS,Texas. Two are from the Officers Lounge and two are from the Avenger Field Officers Assn. When I was in Flight School at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas, we used a runway just to the west of Sweetwater to practice touch and go landings. I don't know if this was Avenger Field or not, but Avenger Field was five miles to the west of Sweetwater. We were training in T-33's, the old T-Bird and in 1959 when I was there, the field was unoccupied. The first aircraft that got to the field in the morning would make a high speed, very low pass down the runway to chase the rattlesnakes off of it. The rattlesnakes, which are cold-blooded would slither up on the concrete which would stay warmer at night than the surrounding ground and sleep there. The aircraft moving at a high speed and low altitude would create enough of a shock wave to wake them up and get them moving for cover. We were not environmentalists trying to save the lives of the snakes, we were trying to save our own lives, because when the gear of the aircraft hit a large snake, the aircraft turned abruptly into the direction of the gear that was struck. This could cause the aircraft to leave the runway, the pilot to lose control and maybe crash the aircraft. Since we were all low time students at that time, the brass didn't want to take too many chances.

Avenger Field had an interesting history during World War II. It was the local airport before the war, and received a contract from the Army in 1939-40 to train cadets for the Air Corps. After that program ended, British air cadets were trained there until 1942. In late 1942, the Army acquired the field for use as a training field. In 1943, the field was selected as the training center for women ferry pilots known as WASP's (Women's Air Force Service Pilots). Thru 1944, 1074 women earned their wings and flew everything from fighters to bombers. Their primary mission was to deliver new aircraft from the factory to the fighting front and thus reliever male pilots for combat duties. WASP's also flew tow-targets, cargo and weather planes. They were commanded by the well known female pilot, Jacqueline Cochran and Avenger Field was locally known as "Cochran's Convent". The WASP program continued until the end of 1944, when it was disbanded. Thirty-eight WASP's died while in government service. Avenger Field was deactivated and returned to the city after the war.

So there had to be a few sweethearts among those female pilots that trained at Avenger Field.

Just a short follow up on the fake Ceylon note that I wrote about last week. I got four responses from other folks that had similar experiences, one of which was printed in the Gram. It appears that the notes probably originated in Australia and the seller that I and another Gramster bought from got four notes from that party and then went on to sell at least two of them on eBay. Unfortunately, eBay will not let you look more than 30 days into the past, so I can't see if any were sold before the middle of January. I did get a refund check this week and am holding my breath until it clears. I believe that my seller is an uninformed victim of a crook in Australia. Many of the sellers on eBay are not knowledgeable of what they are listing. So the old adage of "Buyer beware" is still good advice.

Editorial

----------------------------------------------

We are pleased and excited to release the ordering instructions and other details about the new MPC book below. We are especially excited about the opportunity to offer a very limited edition of 46 to Gram readers. You get the first (and therefore only) opportunity at this extremely limited and interesting special edition. In addition to being a "limited and special" edition based upon the way it is manufactured, it will have special features sure to make it a hit. Even at this moment all of the specials have not been decided, but you will like the "package" I am sure.

Mail Call

----------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. Publisher 4th edition;

Rumor control (or possibly an official announcement) has it that there will be a "special edition" of the new book. How many "special" numbered 4th edition books will be printed? And what is the procedure for obtaining said book?

David

Dear David,

Well the rumor mill seems to have been working overtime. Did we mention a "special edition" of the MPC book. Possibly we did. Well, we have outdone ourselves on this one I think.

First the facts. There will be three major options on the new book. First, the basic book, 400 pages hardbound. Second, the "collectors’ edition," is also hardbound. The cover of this edition says collectors’ edition and has an additional 32 pages for a total of 432. Most of the extra pages are (lined) note pages for, well, taking notes, but there are some additional features in this section, 200 produced. Finally, there is what we are calling the researcher’s edition. This is the same as the collectors’ edition except that it has nice wire binding. This makes it very flexible and ideal for the serious collector. Production on this version was 46 (as in 1946, as in Series 461).

All of the researcher and up to 100 of the collectors’ editions will be numbered and signed. They will also have other little features that have not been finalized.

Everyone wants to know the prices. Even that is not so easy. It is more of a marketing plan. Here it is.

We do not expect to advertise the researcher’s edition anywhere other than the Gram. If any are left, we might take them to shows or just put them in the warehouse.

As stated above, up to 100 of the collectors’ edition will be numbered, autographed and otherwise embellished.

The basic prices are:

Basic edition--$50

Collectors’ edition--$95

Researchers’ edition--$125

To make it even more complicated, for those who want a "set," we offer the following. Matched numbers of the collectors’ AND researchers’ edition PLUS the matching numbered/autographed basic edition (not sold separately) AND a "work" copy of the basic edition (NOT numbered, autographed, or embellished). Finally, we will prepare these books at the Fest. We will have the collectors’ edition autographed by other major contributors who are in attendance and ship the day after the Fest. The "work" copy of the basic edition will be mailed on the first possible day.

Review of minimum (we are planning an additional surprise or two) contents of the monster library.

Basic edition, work copy

Basic edition, numbered

Collectors’ edition, numbered, signed, etc

Researchers’ edition, numbered, signed, etc

The cost of this monster library is $250 postpaid (two shipments). Orders will be accepted starting at 1 pm Eastern on Saturday with numbers assigned in the order received at MPCGram@yahoo.com except for sets 2, 4, and 8 which are tentatively reserved for the collectors who collect those position numbers on MPC/MFC. We will The number one set will be sold in the MPCFest auction. Reminders will be published on Friday and Saturday.

Orders for the basic edition and collector’s edition will be accepted now ($4 shipping), but numbers for the collectors’ edition will be allocated after the big modules have been assigned. Payment may be made by PayPal (preferred) at fredschwan@yahoo.com, or by sending any kind of paper to BNR Press, 132 E. Second St., Port Clinton, OH 43452. We no longer accept credit cards.

We are sorry that this is so intricate/complicated, but it will not be once Gramsters wipe out the special editions. Thank you very much for your interest and support.

Editor

Dear Editor,

[Regarding the explanation that the location of the for sale section is intended to force scrolling through the Gram.]

That’s a crock. I scroll through the junk, all right, a page at a time, faster than anyone could read it. I only keep all that crap about once a month. Your dumb idea just makes people hate the pages and pages of junk that never change. They surely don’t go through it in detail to see if it HAS changed.

Joe

Dear Joe,

Thank you for your comments. I guess the point is that we now have a need for an MPCGram clipping service.

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
