More on the Mails

By Joe Boling

There was a front page article on irradiated mail in Linn’s this week, as more collectors' stamps have been found that have been destroyed by radiation. That article specifically addressed the use of metallic pouches. These do not shield the articles contained therein from the extremely high levels of radiation used in this program. Notice what I said in my original column--this is not taking an xray; it is cooking the contents to kill spores. The metallic pouches trap heat and cause more damage than would occur if they were absent. Do not wrap your notes in foil, no matter what kind of metal it is made from (aluminum or lead). That article also said that at present only mail passing through Northern Virginia is being irradiated; New York was not mentioned.

MPC Book ordering information, repeated from Gram 555

Today is the day to order your monster set of MPC books. The information below is repeated from Gram 555.

There will be three major options on the new book. First, the basic book, 400 pages hardbound. Second, the "collectors’ edition," is also hardbound. The cover of this edition says collectors’ edition and has an additional 32 pages for a total of 432. Most of the extra pages are (lined) note pages for, well, taking notes, but there are some additional features in this section, 200 produced. Finally, there is what we are calling the researcher’s edition. This is the same as the collectors’ edition except that it has nice wire binding. This makes it very flexible and ideal for the serious collector. Production on this version was 46 (as in 1946, as in Series 461).

All of the researcher and up to 100 of the collectors’ editions will be numbered and signed. They will also have other little features that have not been finalized.

Everyone wants to know the prices. Even that is not so easy. It is more of a marketing plan. Here it is.

We do not expect to advertise the researcher’s edition anywhere other than the Gram. If any are left, we might take them to shows or just put them in the warehouse.

As stated above, up to 100 of the collectors’ edition will be numbered, autographed and otherwise embellished.

The basic prices are:

Basic edition--$50

Collectors’ edition--$95

Researchers’ edition--$125

To make it even more complicated, for those who want a "set," we offer the following. Matched numbers of the collectors’ AND researchers’ edition PLUS the matching numbered/autographed basic edition (not sold separately) AND a "work" copy of the basic edition (NOT numbered, autographed, or embellished). Finally, we will prepare these books at the Fest. We will have the collectors’ edition autographed by other major contributors who are in attendance and ship the day after the Fest. The "work" copy of the basic edition will be mailed on the first possible day.

Review of minimum (we are planning an additional surprise or two) contents of the monster library.

Basic edition, work copy

Basic edition, numbered

Collectors’ edition, numbered, signed, etc

Researchers’ edition, numbered, signed, etc

The cost of this monster library is $250 postpaid (two shipments). Orders will be accepted starting at 1 pm Eastern on Saturday with numbers assigned in the order received at MPCGram@yahoo.com except for sets 2, 4, 8, and 39 which are tentatively reserved for the collectors who collect those position numbers on MPC/MFC. We will The number one set will be sold in the MPCFest auction. Reminders will be published on Friday and Saturday.

Orders for the basic edition and collector’s edition will be accepted now ($4 shipping), but numbers for the collectors’ edition will be allocated after the big modules have been assigned. Payment may be made by PayPal (preferred) at fredschwan@yahoo.com, or by sending any kind of paper to BNR Press, 132 E. Second St., Port Clinton, OH 43452. We no longer accept credit cards.

We are sorry that this is so intricate/complicated, but it will not be once Gramsters wipe out the special editions. Thank you very much for your interest and support.

Editorial

----------------------------------------------

Based upon the mail received in the past few days, there is a lot of interest in the various editions of the MPC book and in the Monster Set. Of course we are pleased by this. Tomorrow we will report how many monster sets were sold.

Also tomorrow we will start featuring the Fest in the Gram. We are working on a draft training schedule. Do not worry, we have not forgotten about the morning 10k runs and swims. If the weather holds, ice will not be a problem for the swims.

Mail Call

----------------------------------------------

Dear Editor,

Not sure If I totally agree with "method" of the way the new book sales are to be implemented. Books number 2-4-8 reserved because of the position number they collect? I know of someone who collects position #1 notes and that book(s) will be auctioned @ Fest III. If everyone Emails @ precsiely 1PM eastern time, how the heck are you going to determine who gets what? How about the COLLECTORS who have been in this hobby for many, many years? You, Elmer Smith, Leo May, Marvin Mericle........Not all the Newbys that have jumped on the MPC bandwagon past couple years. Guess I'm getting sour in my old age...47 next Thursday.

MPC-WEST

Dear Old Sour Guy,

Thank you very much for writing. First to the easy part. The numbers will be assigned in the order in which the mails are in my box. Probably that is unfair too. Oh well. It just seemed fitting to encourage the folks who are collecting by position. By the way, notice that I added 39 to the list today because I had forgotten that one!

Of course, as you indicate, number one is a problem. First, at least two people collect position number one. Beyond that, many people will be interested in that one even though they do not collect that position.

I for one am pleased to see the newbees even though, as you indicate, they also compete with the old stale air guys.

I had thought about the possibility of making as many number one copies as there was demand, but that sort of defeats the purpose it seems to me.

Editor

Dear editor and target,

Thank you for holding out monster set number 8 of the MPC book for me. It will go into the set of BNR Press products that I am accumulating (but I know there are many BNR Press products that I don't have here).

Joe

Dear Joe,

I am happy that you are pleased. It is always nice to get pleasant comments, but from you it is special! At least in your case, the special treatment is going to an "old guy."

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
