Series 003 - Number 600

FEATURED
ARTICLE
by Dave Klinger
I have a few more
details related to the face design on the Series 681 fractional notes. We all
know that the main design is of the submarine USS Thomas A. Edison (SSBN 610).
It was also determined that
the photo from which the design was taken was from 1963 as the SUB was
leaving Holy Loch Scotland. I posted the note on several web sites asking for
more information and have received
several good responses from crew
members from the time the photo was taken.
One former crew member, Retired Senior Chief
Sonarman Jack Geng identified the unusual sonar dome on the bow as a "Hindsight
Sonar" part of the AN/BQR-2 Sonar System. Jack said that it didn't work very
well, which is why it was removed soon after this picture was taken.
Also I was able to determine that it was the
Gold crew which was aboard when the photo was taken (thanks to Senior Chief Geng
and Senior Chief Barbee, also a shipmate from that time.)
What that means is that the man on top of the
sail is the CO of the Gold Crew - CDR William Dedrick (photos attached).
Editors note: the Commanding Officer and the "Gold Crew" of a
newly built naval vessel, are also called the "Plank Owners" This is because he
(and his crew) were on hand for the christening ceremony at the respective
shipyard where that vessel was built. After their first tour, or as the navy
calls them, roles and missions, they were then relieved for r&r by the "Blue
Crew". Then subsequently Gold and Blue crews alternated scheduled operational
tours. (reference page 31: "SUBMARINE: a guided tour inside a nuclear warship",
by Tom Clancy
You can look at
these photos at the following web address:
CDR Dedrick
(man on top of
the sail)
USS Thomas A. Edison - SSBN 610
(compare with color photo - notice sailors on deck and land were removed,
but seen in above color photo)
This from Senior Chief Geng:
"CDR Dedrick was my first
skipper, and what a fine Commander he was. We all thought the world of him. In
fact we called ourselves "Dedricks Tasmanian Devils". When we came back from
patrol, we had a large canvas
banner with the cartoon character of the
Tasmanian Devil tied onto the sail."
EDITORIAL
I know AOL users will be able to see
these pictures embedded, but I don't know how many other ISP's support embedded
images. As with this gram, if successful, we will continue to embed images and
list the URL to view the images directly. And on a personal note, and being real
keen on submarines, I found the above article really interesting. Thanks David!
Now, in response to my slip up on
Gram 591, and Joe Bolings letter concerning such, Ed Beaman was gracious enough
to locate the following in MPC Gram archives for me:
Series 472 MPCKid
Series 481 MPCSki
Series 641 David Seeyle (this was changed to Phil
Goldstein a day after publication)
Series 651 Marv Mericle
Series 691
and 701 Marcus Turner
I am sure that
everyone will agree that we look forward to your comments on these respective
series. If you want my commentary/consultation before publication, get the
articles done early and send them!" Fred
Now, I have cordially invited
Mike Cummings to write a few word on Series 611 which is coming up, as he is
fond of the Series 611 $5 note.. I only hope he can find time. Series 661, 681,
and 692 are currently unassigned. I know Fred can pick up on one, anyone care to
take one on?

I recently bought two large fireproof safes and am sorting down and
placing
hundreds of pieces in holders before stuffing them in the
safe. Later, I
will start sorting them down to find the duplicates and
others I need to
trade and sell so everything will fit in the safes.
Some of the pieces I
have recently rediscovered that might be of interest to
you are;

most
Gramsters. Remember, the above are not for sale and are just
presented
here for anyone's research/knowledge.
