FEATURED ARTICLE
by Donald Teo
of Singapore
submitted by Mel Steinberg
BROWN $10:
It was during the Singapore Coin
Show in March 2002 that it was first discovered. A local part time dealer, Mr.
Lee, bought a collection of Malaya bank notes from a member of the public at the
show. He mistakenly thought that the BROWN $10 was a below average specimen of
the purple $10 of 1940. However, he later realized that it was brown and dated
1941. Mr. Joseph Pohof, United Numismatic Centre bought it for resale and a few
days later I was the exited new owner of the note.
When was it actually issued? The
archives of Waterlow and Sons were destroyed by fire during WW2 and the Board of
Commissioners of Currency Malaya had been disbanded after Malaysia and Singapore
attained independence from British rule. If another BROWN $10 does not surface
and no confirmations can be made from the printers or issuers, I would like to
speculate on what actually occurred.
The Board of Commissioners of Currency
Malaya commissioned Waterlow and Sons to design and print a new set of bank
notes with the portrait of King George VI, for use in the Straits Settlements
and Malaya States. A set of proofs, printed in bank note paper and dated 1st
January 1939 were prepared. The proofs were $1 in Green, $5 in Blue and $10 in
Purple. The Proofs were accepted and the bank notes were printed with the 1st
January 1940 date. The $10 were shipped to Malaya and issued to the general
public.
The $1 and $5 bank notes
were being shipped separately to British Malaya by the merchantman Automedon but
were lost on 11 November 1940 to the German raider Atlantis in the Indian Ocean.
The bank notes were sent to Japan. Subsequently, a few bank notes were
apparently issued by the Japanese during their occupation of Malaya. In 1945,
after the surrender of the Japanese and the return of the British, the bank
notes issued had the same design but the colours assigned had been changed. The
$1 had been changed to from GREEN to BLUE, the $5 from BLUE to GREEN and the $10
from PURPLE to RED. The bank notes were dated 1st July 1941. Observations on the
$10 issues:
Serial numbers:
BROWN
A/84 064729 to
A/84 064729
RED
B/70
059656
All serial numbers start with zero,
therefore only 100,000 per block letter/number.
RED $10:
None has been sighted with
block letter ŒA¹ according to Joseph Poh. My Submission: Here is a scenario that
probably took place in the 12 months prior to the British surrender of Singapore
on 15th February 1942. In 1941 there was a need for more $10 bank notes, but
after the $1 GREEN and $5 BLUE were lost to the Germans in November 1940,
contingency plans for additional security had to be made, in case another
shipment of bank notes was to be captured. As a result, the PURPLE $10 was
discontinued and replaced by the BROWN issue, which was printed in England, and
the bank notes shipped to Malaya and ISSUED BEFORE the Japanese invasion.
Obviously, not many got into the hands of the general public.
The Japanese invaded Malaya on 7th
December 1941 and when it was apparent that the surrender was inevitable, an
order was made to destroy all stocks of bank notes in the vaults of the BCCM.
Could it be issued after the war? Unlikely, as it is a well known fact that the
RED $10 was the issue. Could the colour been chemically changed from RED to
BROWN? Unlikely, as there has been no sightings of a block letter ŒA¹ specimen.
Could the colour been chemically changed from PURPLE to BROWN.
Unlikely, but if so, then we will
have the discovery of a PURPLE $10 dated 1st July 1941.
EDITORIAL
Sorry about the multiple sending of this gram,
apparently some text was cut off at the bottom on the first sending, and I
failed to mention that Mel's article above was submitted by him, not authored by
him.
Yesterday's Gram, by the way,
was another milestone. Not only did we have embedded pictures, but we published
our 600th Gram. Can you believe 600 of these things? (Ed Beaman, I feel sorry
for you now!) I wonder how many words those 600 Grams add up to... How many
hours of work went into them. I certainly know the frustration that went into
the past few that I have done, so I can just think of what Fred went through. I
remember the first Gram. I also remember thinking, it'll never last... Too much
work, not enough time.... I'm glad I was wrong.
Congratulations to all
of us who have kept this monster alive and growing for the past 600 issues.
Here's to another 600!
Need an article for tomorrows Gram - I'm all
tapped out. Ed.
MAIL
CALL
Fred/Phil:
Recently in
the Gram there was a question about V-Mail. My father's brother served in
the Marines in WWII. (He was KIA during the landing on Iwo
Jima.) In his effects are numerous V-Mail letters sent to him by his
family and friends. His return mail was not sent via V-Mail. V-Mail
consisted of a one-page letter that also folded into its own envelope. The
letters have detailed instructions on them. The following text is from the
letter:
V-Mail Service
provides the most expeditious dispatch and reduces the weight of mail to and
from personnel of our Armed Forces outside the continental United States.
When addressed to points where micro-film equipment is operated, a miniature
photographic negative of the message will be made and sent by the most
expeditious transportation available for reproduction and delivery. The
original message will be destroyed after the reproduction has been
delivered. Messages addressed to or from points where micro-film equipment
is not operated will be transmitted by the most expeditious means available.
(1) Write the entire message plainly on the
other side within marginal lines.
(2) PRINT the name and
address in the two panels provided. Addresses to members of the Armed
Forces should
include rank
or rating of the addressee, unit to which attached, and APO or Naval address.
(3) Fold, seal, and deposit in any post office letter drop or
street letter box.
(4) Enclosures must not be placed in the
envelope and a separate V-Mail letter must be sent if you desire to write
more than one sheet.
(5)
V-Mail letter may be sent free of postage by members of the Armed
Forces. When sent by others postage
must be prepaid at domestic rates (3c
ordinary mail, 6c if air mail is desired).
I trust that this
information will be helpful.
