A New Wrinkle in Danish Military Currency
By Warner
Talso
I say "new" advisedly. This is
new to me and I can find no mention in S/B. It turns out that the Danish
personnel aboard the hospital ship "Jutlandia"; serving during the Korean
Conflict has their own specially printed paper
currency in Danish
Kronor. It seems to me this satisfies the definition of military
currency. It was a special issue for a United Nations force serving in a
combat zone. Denominations were 5 Øre, 10 Øre, 25 Øre, 1 Krone, 5 Kroner, 10
Kroner, and 50 Kroner.
See a sample 5 Kr note at www.papermoneyworld.net/Jutlandia
5 Kr.jpg
The Jutlandia was built
as a combined cargo and passenger ship in Denmark in 1934 for The East Asiatic
Company Ltd. During WW II, she was "trapped" in Danish waters and had to
be laid up. She was not seized by the German occupation forces, since they
did not have the diesel oil needed to sail it. The vessel was rebuilt after the
war and resumed normal civil service, sailing from Denmark to the Far East and
the USA.
After the North Korean
attack on South Korea on 25Jun50, Denmark offered the United Nations assistance
and the UN accepted a fully equipped Danish Hospital Ship. After some
quick investigations, the Danes decided that the M/S Jutlandia was the most
suitable ship available in a hurry. The ship was on its way to New York
when this decision was made. There had been no time to inform the master, so he
was rather surprised when arriving to New York seeing the quay full of
photographers and journalists who had already got the news directly from the
UN. The ship was rushed home and all possible staff worked day and night
in November and December 1950 to transform it into a hospital ship.
On 23Jan51, they ran up the flags of
UN, Denmark, and the Red Cross -- the three flags the ship was to fly for nearly
three years. It was a civil ship run by the Danish Foreign Ministry under
the UN command and sailing under
the Red Cross. She left Denmark from
the port of Copenhagen, where the Jutlandia Memorial, made in granite from South
Korean mountains and supported by Korea's veterans, is now placed. The hospital,
as well as the crew, were
voluntary Danish personnel. See a picture of
the ship at:
www.papermoneyworld.net/Jutlandia
Ship.jpg
The ship was then
probably the most modern hospital in Denmark and had wards with a total of 356
hospital beds (during normal service), 4 operating rooms, X-ray-, eye-, and
dental clinics, laboratories, pharmacy and other
specialized departments.
The hospital had a staff of 91 persons: professors, doctors, specialists, nurses
and assistants. The ship's crew totaled 97.
After arriving in Korea, Jutlandia
was first stationed in Pusan as an evacuation hospital. In 1952, after the
ship was fitted with a helicopter deck aft, it was transferred to the Bay of
Inchon where it had to anchor in the roads with two American hospital ships. As
the first allied hospital unit serving in Korea, the hospital treated 4,981
patients, mostly severely wounded soldiers from 24 different nations. Further,
about 6,000-7,000 civilian Koreans were treated onboard Jutlandia or by the
Danish hospital staff in most often very primitive wards and first aid stations
ashore.
Sometime after the
cease-fire on 27Jul53, Jutlandia returned home, filled with wounded soldiers,
mostly Europeans. But before the ship left Korean waters, all the hospital
equipment that could be spared was left behind as well as some doctors. The same
was the case with the Norwegian MASH and the Swedish hospital department from
Pusan. With this very much-needed help, the ground was laid for "The
Scandinavian Educational Hospital" in Seoul, later to be taken over completely
by Korea as the National Medical Center, NMC.
The 5 Kr note illustration is
courtesy of Steen Hartmann, who has a very interesting web site on Danish
history, to include military numismatics, can be visited at:
http://www.residence.dk/
In addition to the Jutlandia, there
were three U.S. hospital ships: the USS Haven, USS Repose, and USS
Consolation. According to a nurse on the Consolation, they used U.S.
currency on board the ship and "little pieces of paper" called scrip (I assume
she meant MPC), when they went ashore. Another gentleman says: "Thank you for
your inquiry about pay on Hospital Ships. All hospital ships old and current
have a disbursing officer on board and they pay the crew and patients military
pay. While we were in Korea during the war we were paid in Scrip. Back in the
1950's $1.00 was worth 380 yen and the prices were cheap. The hospital ships had
a geedunk stand that sold, candy, cigarettes, etc and we paid in scrip. The new
hospital ships have a regular PX on board with many items for sale including the
cigarettes and candy and pipe tobacco. I hope this answers your question."
He goes on to say that he has no scrip left because he spent it on R&R in
Japan. This suggests the US ships were using MPC Series 481.
It would be interesting to learn
more about this niche for military numismatics
EDITORIAL
Hello All! A very interesting article indeed -
kudos to Warner for that article. I remember when I bought my first piece
of Jutlandia Hospital Ship Money: a 25 Ore note from a Canadian dealer for $5
US. Then I found a complete set of same for $49 from same dealer. From time to
time this firm offers complete sets for sale. I do believe Dave Seelye has a set
in stock as well.
On a Gram operations note: In the future, I would
appreciate all Gram recipients to address personal mail & correspondance to
Fred directly to him at FredSchwan@yahoo.com or

Any Gram related mail, Advertisements,

This is being
done to both simplify matters do I don't delete any of Fred's email by mistake,
and so Fred's personal mail, stays personal.

Hi!
I have been
collecting and dealing in coins, paper money, stamps, and related items 40
years. Using "black lights" and "UV lights" one can find "stamps" as well as
"paper money" come in "experimental" as well as just a variety of papers. When
using a "Black Light" on my MPC, I noticed that series #641 fractionals as well
as "ALL OF" series #651 and some of the fractionals of series #692 come on "High
Bright Paper!" In stamps, this can change the value and is considered a
different variety. I also have a "lone" series #461 $10, 'not from the pack of
100 that was broken up in the 70-80's', that exhibits this quality! I have about
5-20 of most all notes in CU, that I used to compare, except the rarer issues. I
noticed this paper variety on as many as half the notes in a given group from
series #641 fractionals and a few of #692 fractionals I can't explain why I only
have seen one "lone series #461 $10" on this "high bright paper" as no other
notes exhibit this quality until the 600 series. Does anyone else collect or
study these
varities?
Guy Araby!
