FEATURED ARTICLE - SHOW REPORT
Central States Show by Marcus
Turner
It looks like I arrived at
the show just in time to miss Fred. My experience was limited to Saturday
only due to that little thing called work. This was my first “road-trip
experience” at the Central States Show. In years past I had managed to
catch the show when it was held in Indianapolis (probably twice in the last 15
years or so). I would have liked to exhibit last year but the show was in
Indianapolis at the same time I was at the show in the Netherlands. To keep with
tradition, this year, I went with my Dad, and to start a new tradition my 6-year
old daughter Katie also made the trek. It was busy from the minute we hit the
door. My daughter was anxious to get started on the treasure hunt that
they had set up for the kids. I am accustomed to the YN auction concept,
so the treasure hunt activity for kids was a different experience. I
actually enjoyed it and my daughter learned a lot. They even included questions
on paper money!
You could tell that
Fred had been at the show the day before, because all of the good MPC had been
sold. I was however able find plenty of Gramsters. I immediately
made a bee-line for Marv Mericle. He did me a HUGE favor in setting up my
exhibit. Once again, having to hold down a job sure puts a hamper
attending and exhibiting at shows! Thanks for getting me set up
Marv! He was easy to spot in the crowd given that all of the CSNS
officers/governors wear gold jackets. Marv had two noncompetitive exhibits set
up. One was his COMPLETE exhibit of all CHOICE CU MPC. It is a
spectacular exhibit. His second was entitled “The 41 Cent Tour” which was
an explanation of the history of our pocket change. Both were very well
done. It was also great to visit with John & Nancy Wilson. I recognized
their exhibit of Bulgarian Proof notes which was also in category. Other
“Gramsters” in attendance were George Fitzgerald, Lowell Horwedell, Tom Denly,
Tim Kyzivat and Wendell Wolka.
As
Fred mentioned, I did have my exhibit of French Equatorial Africa 1000 Franc
Notes at the show. This was by far the best exhibiting (and most
competitive) that I have seen anywhere to date! I managed to take second
place, while Wendell took first place in the Paper Money Category. Wendell
had an absolutely spectacular exhibit of obsolete Ohio banknotes. He was
clearly my personal favorite to take best of show honors. Since I did not
stay until Sunday morning, I do not know who won that award. Perhaps Marv
Mericle will give us a follow up on the Sunday morning awards breakfast and the
remainder of the show. I was also pleased to find that there were a couple of
individuals interested in applying for a scholarship to the Military Money
Seminar this June (SHAMELESS
PLUG: PLEASE GET YOUR APPLICATIONS IN BY MAY 15TH).
Overall
the show was OUTSTANDING. Hats off to CSNS President Ray Lockwood, Vice
President Marv Mericle, Exhibit Chairman Fran Lockwood, and the rest of the CSNS
leadership for putting on such a great show!
==============================================
EDITORIAL
Marcus was kind enough to send an updated list of
donors to the scholarship. Are you on it? If not...WHY NOT? Deadline is
rapidly approaching. I think everyone who has taken the time and donated to the
scholarship so far deserves a big thank you! The Fest Auction was comprised of a
lot of donations, and really helped boost up the scholarship fund.
To
John and Nancy Wilson: Do you have a show schedule for gram yet? It's
looking a little sparse.. shows in 2002 are good enough for now. I'll start
listing 2003 shows around September.
==============================================
MAIL CALL
Doug, Several grams ago, there was a link to the web
site to receive a certificate from U.S. Gov. for Cold War service. Of course, I
lost it during some computer problems I was having. Do you still have record
of this, and if so, could you please run it in the gram one more time?
Thanks, Jack Hunter

Dear fellow gramsters, The quality of any price guide or
catalog is a direct reflection of the current contributors and the market
analyst/editor. Getting everyone "in the know" in any particular series to
contribute additional information/ pricing suggestions has always been an
ongoing challenge. Any criticism received after a price guide's release should
be taken as constructive criticism and the matter should be investigated
promptly and the results revealed to the original souce and in our case to the
"pack" of interested gramsters. This gives any or all interested parties the
feeling that the source of the price guide is dedicated to the accuracy of his
or her product.
I've been in this arena of publishing for over 28 years
now and I can say for a fact that getting accurate market valuations in certain
series or for certain items can be like pulling wisdom teeth with rubber
extractors, - pardon the pun. Best wishes, Colin R. Bruce II

$2500, on P.214 the UNC. price is $3500. Also the rest of the prices don't match
