FEATURED ARTICLE
LOGEX money by Joseph
Boling
While I was stationed at Fort
Harrison the first time (1969-70), I was assigned to the Command and Staff
Department of the AG School. That department was responsible for the officer
basic and advanced courses, as well as many enlisted courses. Each year the Army
Reserve operated a training exercise at Fort Lee, Virginia, called Logistical
Exercise, or LOGEX. To fill out certain positions in the staffing of the
exercise, officers from the advanced course and faculty members were sent
also.
One feature of LOGEX was
training reserve APO and finance personnel. Part of the finance training was a
C-day. Each person attending LOGEX received one piece of LOGEX money in his/her
initial orientation packet (some years those pieces had a notice stapled to them
reminding the soldier to hang onto that piece of training money, because it
would be needed during the exercise). At some point during the week, a C-day
would be declared and all the pre-issued notes would be exchanged for a new
series. In the
early years LOGEX money was large (approximate dimensions of the pre-1928 US
notes). In later years, it was reduced to small-size note dimensions. I never
encountered any hoards of LOGEX notes; mine were collected one at a time, but
mostly around Fort Harrison (I don’t specifically remember getting any from
other hobby sources, dealers, distant collectors). Following is a list of the
LOGEX notes in my collection. First is the date that appears on the note, if
any; then a description; then the pseudo-serial number that appears someplace on
the note (constant for all pieces). See pp182-3 of MPC-4 for illustrations of
two of the small
types.

EDITORIAL
This Gram is heading out a little late,
so I'll keep this editor short and sweet... Once again, Joe has outdone himslef
with a superb article on a obscure item of interest to MPC collectors. I know
they are in the book, but very few collectors ever discuss them.
As per the article in the Gram a few days
ago on Hospital Ship Money, there is listed below in the PX for sale section, is
a set of Jutlandia Hospital Ship Notes for anyone interested..
==============================================
MAIL CALL
Phil: I responded to three different grams using my
reply button. In each case the items were returned as undeliverable. Is this
something new??? Dick

A few comments for the
gram. Thirty-five years ago today (4/30/67) I arrived late in the evening at Da
Nang Airbase in the RVN to serve with the 1st Marine Air Wing. (Ironic that
eight years later to the day the RVN surrendered to the communists, don't think
my arrival precipitated that?) On May 1st we checked in and I had my first
exposure to "monopoly money" series 641 MPC when we converted all our greenbacks
and coins to MPC. Never went through a "C" day during my 13 month tour.
Celebrated my 19th and almost my 20th birthday over there (missed it by 6 days!)
It doesn't seem like that long ago! Guess I'm older than I think! Wish I
knew how to recognize a replacement note while I was there. Wonder how many I
handled and spent, not knowing any better! Happy MPC collecting, Larry
Gibbs
P.S. Regarding the 651 50c hoard that just appeared. Wonder how
many more are out there and how many more 691 and 701 notes are squirreled away
for future flooding. I suspect this market is being manipulated, and has been
for quite awhile! Larry Gibbs
