FEATURED ARTICLE
Missing Pseudo MPC Vietnam Notes by Unknown Subscriber
Several years ago, I was shopping in the Atlanta Lakewood Antique
show for silverware as well as MPC when I spotted what looked like series 541 $5
notes. Looking over the picture frame, they were in several denominations
and as I recall, 5/10/25/50 (not sure of all these) cents and $1, $5,
$10.
Somebody's souvenir collection from Operation Turnkey, circa 1966,
the building of one of two airfields in Vietnam by US contractors with some help
from the US Air Force civil engineers.
The effort had to be virtually
independent of all other military activity so as to not divert resources and
affect the other war effort and major buildup. These were used on the base in
the club, commissary and other areas but not downtown. The printed usage
conditions were very similar to those of regular US MPC.
MPC was in use
during this time frame in Vietnam, of course, but it appears this was separate
money printed for use at this base. Morrison Knudson (from my home town of
Boise, Idaho) was involved in this effort. So most, if not all, of the
workers were civilian contractors.
This picture frame had the notes
scotched to a card board backing. I bot the set for $25 and later, left
the flea market to visit the downtown pawn shops for silverware.
I had a
"GD" Japanese stupid trash car with locking knobs that popped up when the door
was shut even though they were in the down position when I closed the door!!!
damn car!!! damn car!!! Returning to the car about an hour later, the
picture frame that was on the front seat was MISSING!!!!! No silverware
MISSING (it was on the floor), just the Tuy Hoa notes.
I looked around
and the bums and drunkards that frequented the back fenced area had left. Bad
area but usually they left people alone. So I was SOL!!!
I checked across
the street in a market that had some antique shops in the basement but no
luck. About three months later, I was again in Atlanta and checked across
the street and sure enough some thief had sold the frame to a dealer who in turn
had sold it somebody else. GD BUMS!!!!! GD THIEVES!!!!!
I filed
a Police report but no luck. I even wrote the Atlanta coin club No
LUCK Area is now fenced and they can't get in.
So for three hours I
had some very special pseudo MPC notes. These were mentioned in
BNR a few years ago.
If anybody knows anybody in Atlanta who might know
of these I would appreciate hearing about them. Not a lot out
there!!

EDITORIAL
Ok gramsters, this should do it. I
expect to be back on a regular schedule of getting the gram out. As summer
approaches and other parts of my life demand attention, the Gram may go out
around 10-11 p.m. EST, but be assured, technical and server access problems
aside, it should go out.
If anyone
is getting doubled grams, multiple mailings, or you should stop getting Grams
altogether, I STRONGLY recommend you contact Doug directly.. It will save time
and confusion... You may contact him at:
doug@papermoneyworld.net.
Fest
Attendees! Please note: Exactly 300 days remain until Fest IV. Approximately 10
months. Geez, where is the time going? I'm already looking forward to it...Are
you?

MAIL CALL
Dear Gramsters, I am now in Ho Chi Minh City and have
started going through numismatic material. I have pushed the MPC off to
later when I can concentrate on each one, but I have come across one replacement
that I do not need and is available here for US$30. It is a Series 692
.10Cents Plate 54 with serial E00424495. If anyone wants it, I will buy it
and bring it back in early June with me. Please send me an email at Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com
