Show Report and an AMC Mark Counterfeit by Joseph
Boling
This past weekend was the
Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association annual convention in Tukwila, a Seattle
suburb. As an officer of the PNNA, I was heavily involved--much more than I
would normally be at a convention of this type. Because I had to be there all
weekend, I had time on Friday to make the rounds of the dealers, and as
treasurer of the PNNA I also handled (after the fact) all of the cash that came
in at registration. Lets talk about the cash first.
Recall that last year I observed
that all the $20 notes except one were of the new design; I had not realized
that the new design had displaced the old so thoroughly. This year I checked all
the income for Saturday and Sunday (I did not have time to examine the Friday
receipts before depositing them Saturday morning). With a $2/day, $5/weekend
entry fee, we took in lots of dollar bills. All were in the following series in
the indicated quantities: 1995 / 89 pieces; 1999 / 202 pieces; 2001 / 3 pieces.
This works out to the following percentages: 30/69/1. These were the first
examples of the 2001 series that I have seen; they have very distinctive
signatures. I am surprised that there are so many 1995 notes still out. The
dollar bill is supposed to have a circulation life of eighteen months or less--
I would expect the 1995 notes to be much further retired than is evident.
In the $5 notes, we had twelve of
series 1995 (the old design) and nine of series 1999 (57%). In $10 notes, only
one of series 1995 and three of series 1999. A word about $10 notes; I have had
my bank looking for pre-1995 pieces for many weeks. In all that time, the
tellers have found only a single 1993 note. All the others have been 1995 or
later. I am surprised at how completely the 1995 series dominates the old design
pieces (which seem to be running at a higher rate then the 25% in our tiny PNNA
sample). In $20 notes, we took in thirty-one 1996 pieces and sixteen 1999 notes
(34%) - every piece is in the new design. There was a single $50, series 1996.
On the hard currency side, there were ten Sacagawea dollars, one Susie B, and
two Ike dollars! I bought all those to use in my daily shopping (I never carry
dollar notes any more--I carry metallic dollars and $2 bills (when I can get
them) and arrange my tenders so that I get paper change only in $5 and higher
denominations).
Enough of the
civilian side; now for a military piece. On Bill Henderson's latest list, he had
a 100 mark AMC counterfeit. Due to the crush of affairs in the past three weeks,
I had let the list sit on my desk, read but not ordered from. I was sure that he
would have sold the piece by the time I saw him Friday. Not so; not only did he
still have it, but he had brought the list stock to the show. I was able to
acquire the fake and a genuine to go with it. Now for the interesting stuff.
Recall that the Soviet printed AMC marks can be visually separated quickly
(without checking for the Forbes printer's mark) by checking the serial numbers
for a 3+6 configuration--three digits somewhat misaligned with the final six
digits. The three are usually composed of a dash and two numerals, because the
sample notes that the Soviets received with their printing elements were
specimens made from replacements, which Forbes indicated with a leading dash.
The Soviets apparently concluded that all serial numbers were to start with a
dash. Only when their numbering reached -99,999,999 in a denomination (without
the commas) did they convert the dash to a numeral "1" and keep on numbering
(they did not start at zero, so they actually did not produce more than 100
million pieces of any denomination).
The counterfeit that I bought from
Bill does not have the Forbes mark, which would indicate that a Soviet-printed
piece was used as the model (the plate is crude, but there is not even a blob
where the script "f" would be). The serial number, in addition to being ragged
overall, shows a distinct 3+6 form. But, the number is 037821825, an impossible
number for a Soviet production; they never used a leading zero. The plate is not
a photographic reproduction of an original; my conclusion is that the
counterfeiters created a new plate from scratch, omitted the Forbes mark when
they came to it, and had the same problem that the Soviets had with serial
numbering--no nine-wheel machines. They had to set up two machines next to each
other. (An alternative would be to print the 037 as part of the main face plate,
using a six-wheel serial numbering machine next to those initial digits, but
that is not what they did on this note--all digits are letterpress over the
black face plate.)
Does anyone else
have a 100 mark AMC fake? If so, what is the serial number?
=================================================== MAIL
CALL
I received a
scholarship application from a docent at the Pueblo Aircraft Museum for the
"Military Numismatics" class. She writes "The Museum owns more than ten thousand
military artifacts (including WW II military script and foreign currency) from
World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Cold War as well as from WW I and the Gulf
War."
I have two questions, or
comments: Would your group like to sponsor her for the class? (just tuition as
she lives close) and might this be a great field trip for the class???
Also, what happened to the
Gram? I have not received one in a month. Gail Baker

Fred, Nice way to gloss over the 651 .50 cent
situation. Change the price structure? $250 each? Are you mad?
Do you honestly believe that he only took .50 cent notes? Come on, Phil
had the right idea all along on his website. Are you guys totally blind or
what! Wake up and smell the hoard! Al Bab
=================================================== EDITORIAL
It appears
by Gail's letter above, some people are still suffering from glitches caused by
the electrical spike several weeks ago to the Gram server. Anyone still
receiving multiple grams? no grams? fookey grams? Contact Doug directly at: doug@papermoneyworld.net
So it seems, more people are becoming
suspicious about the 651 fractional notes... Fishy circumstances leave too many
unanswered questions, which no one cares to answer honestly. Class, the word of
the day is: Caution. We know have the following people lined up for articles for
the following Gram / Series
