FEATURED ARTICLE
Australian Use of MPC by Dave
Klinger
Dear Editor, I sent an e-mail to the Australian MOD (History
Unit) to try and get an answer to Fred's question about use of MPC during
the Korean War by other nations. I didn't get an answer to the
direct question, but I'll share the reply anyway. David
Klinger
Sir, First of all,
congratulations on winning this week's obscure question competition. That is not
a complaint, you just managed one we had never thought of. I have not been able
to find a definitive answer.
The British Commonwealth Occupation Force
(BCOF) in Japan used British Armed Forces Vouchers and troops were also paid in
Japanese currency. The pictorial history of BCOF compiled by Australian
Veterans has a picture of a "chit" for purchasing goods at the US PX or the
snack bar at the Ernie Pile Theatre, Tokio. This is a small ticket printed
"Good for Five Cents in Trade at Tokio PX or Ernie Pile Snack Bar : 8th Army
Printing Plant Boon jude. In 1950 the withdrawal of BCOF from Japan was
halted and the HQ evolved into the base for Commonwealth forces in Korea. I can
find no reference to MPC in the Australian Official History or another veteran
produced book, "Korea Remembered". However, as both focus mainly on
operations this may not prove anything.
You might like to refer your
question to the Korea and South East Asia Forces Association of Australia.
The National Secretary is Mr Peter Smith on:
psmithers@telstra.easymail.com.au I am sorry I could not be of more
assistance.
Yours sincerely, Bill Houston LTCOL Army History
Unit
LTCOL Houston,
Thanks for your reply to my question . Your information is very useful,
since I did not know about the use of British Forces Special Vouchers by
Commonwealth Forces during that time. Also the "chit" info was new to me. I sent
the questionon to Mr. Smith as you suggested. Thanks again, Respectfully
David Klinger

MAIL CALL
Dear Esteemed Editor, I have been in Ho Chi Minh
City (Saigon) for a couple of weeks now and have gone through the stock of
three dealers. All three combined, I have seen only about 300 MPC from 611
to 692. This is the lowest stock I have seen here in ten years! Is
this an indication that the flow of MPC from Viet Nam has dried up? There
might be a former house of ill repute or a bar's "trunk" that might pop up in
the future, but I think the people bringing in one to ten notes to the dealers
is about done. FYI. Howard

Gramsters: Our 2002 Spring Mailbid catalog
(closing May 24) is up on our website at Rosenblumcoins.com. It is available in
both HTML (fully illustrated) and PDF (no images) formats. There are numerous
lots that should appeal to gramsters including 3 MPC notes, a Kume Jima chit
from occupied Japan and concentration camp notes and tokens. Most material will
be available for viewing at our bourse table at the Denver show May 16-19.
Pleasecontact us if you need further information.2- After it seemed like the
problems with me receiving the MPC Gram were cleared up, we haven't received a
copy since Friday April 26th.Best Bill
============================================== EDITORIAL
Once again poor customer service takes it toll on
the innocent. This time my ISP company has placed a "temporary" block on my
account.. No explanation given, but it is darn sure not non payment. I just paid
6 months in advance. (Like I usually do with them) Since billing dept. closed at
4:30 pm, and I just got home, nothing can be done til morning. But the repair
dept. is open... and they have no access to billing. I HATE TECHNOLOGY and
BANKERS HOURS!!!! This Gram is going out via a long distance call through AOL,
so I'm keeping short and sweet. TTYL tomorrow. (Hopefully)
