FEATURED ARTICLE
Odds & Ends by Joseph
Boling
This week I'll be commenting
on items that have appeared in the past ten or so grams--which I have just read
tonight, having about 400 emails backed up over the PNNA convention weekend and
since. In Fred's
analysis of series 611 in gram 612, he mentions that it is one of the harder
series to collect (particularly in high grade). I am finding that it is of
middling difficulty as I acquire position-8 notes. I have three pieces so far,
of seven possible. There are three series from which I have fewer pieces, and
two others of which I have three pieces also. This means that it is tied for
sixth in collecting difficulty in my narrow experience.
The oral history item with Bernard
Bernstein deals with Admiral Darlan and the capture of Algiers. Three or so
years ago I was reading fall 1945 issues of the Seattle Times (on microfiche),
looking for information about a certain local camp emission (the subject of a
future column). I found the papers loaded with headlines about Darlan's trial
for treason (as a Vichy collaborator--he was convicted).
Unknown Subscriber mentioned an antiques mall
in Atlanta (where he bought and lost the frame of Operation Turnkey scrip). That
sounds like the place where Bill Churchwell's wife was selling her artwork. I
have one of her pieces, prepared in ancient style using glue and ground dyed
silkworm cocoons. Churchwell was a military note collector and catalogue
collaborator. He died several years ago.
Dave Klinger corresponded with the
Australian MOD history office. He indicated he had not known that BAFSVs had
been used in Japan. Dave, you're not spending enough time in bed with World War
II Remembered (SB). We mentioned it at the top of the first and second series
listings, and of course the Force T issues were exclusively for Japan (which I
did not know when I was building my Japan-related collection, else I would have
been pursuing them--by the time I learned, it was too late to get those
varieties at any price). The SCAPINs mentioned in SB (Supreme Commander Allied
Powers Instructions to the Japanese Government) also cover the use of Australian
coinage as small change by the BCOF troops. And of course there are the
theater-ticket style BCOF chits that are listed in SB, in yen denominations.
As for the
occupation era chits mentioned by the Australian MOD: I have sen/yen denominated
chits for the Yokohama Snack Bar and the Tokyo PX/Hattori Building, all printed
by Eighth U.S. Army Printing Plant/Boonjudo. By the time my chits mention the
Ernie Pyle Snack Bar, they are in cents (still in the same format, but now with
the numbers 1641 and 1642 appended to the imprint--I don't know what those
represent). I'll have at least some of these at the ANA seminar in July, Dave,
if you want to see them.
All the yen-denominated items probably
pre-date the use of both MPC and BAFSV, because until the military currencies
were introduced, there was no vehicle for use of dollar/sterling emissions.
Troops were being paid in yen (mostly AMC yen, which they could spend downtown
or in the military facilities).
