FEATURED ARTICLE
Widows Who Don't Know/Don't Care!! or A Small Horde of
MPC by Unknown Subscriber
About
10 years ago, I was in Atlanta for the big flea markets and as usual, was also
looking for MPC. I called one shop on a Friday and the owner said he would
have some Sat morning. I called that morning and went right over and about
fell over. About 80 common notes most of which were xf plus including some
crispies. BUT, four were Replacements and three were crispy!!!! The $20
and nickel notes were series 681 which I had used in Vietnam, the rest 641 or
so. All the notes were fairly common, no great serial numbers but in great
condition. Face was around $450 and I started with an offer of $575. He
wanted $1100!!!!!
Of course
this was too much as he had no idea of value or grading until earlier in the
morning when someone had faxed him a green sheet copy. He had not read the fine
print on replacements though. We jockeyed back and forth and I finally
stopped at $700. Not enough for him. So I thought, why let this be a
futile effort and told him of my Vietnam experiences. I said "Let me buy
something out of the deal and of course I picked the 4 replacements and 5 decoy
notes"! I was not about to make his upcoming trip to Biloxi to gamble a
happy one (a common coin dealers cure)!!! Well, I paid the $110 for the
lot and could not believe my good luck!!!
Well, the story gets better as to
how he acquired the notes. A retired Army Major General had just died and
his widow had a take it all away yard sale!! All of his medals, memorabilia,
papers, God knows what else were in the well traveled camo trunk and she just
dumped the LOT FOR $250!!!! A picker bought the trunk and dispersed the
contents quickly. The MPC went to the coin store and that's how I had found
about it. Boy, was she DUMB and STOOPID. Just get rid of it, get it
out of here!! How many times have you heard of things like this
happening? It was not grief, just laziness on her part per the coin shop
owner.
Knowledge is everything and
take your time.
I hope she eats
burgers for a long time.

EDITORIAL
Hey Nick! If the widow was smarter you wouldn't have gotten
your bargain. Never look a gift horse in the mouth, or in our case, think twice
about an unknowledgable dealers shortcomings!
Even though tomorrow is
Tuesday and we have a column scheduled, we are still short on material... Send
in some stories!

Page 398, Series #541 $10 on "UNC." price is
$2500, on P.214 the UNC. price is $3500. Also the rest of the prices don't match
