FEATURED ARTICLE
More Odds
& Ends
by Joseph Boling
I am now about 800 emails backlogged; I
took time tonight to extract the grams so I could see if anyone had responded to
my column of last week. The only reaction I have had was from Tom Koch at a
local club meeting; he has one of the Jefferson Park notes, but not both
denominations.
Am I the only one for whom Gram 626 was an
exact duplicate of Gram 625? Not one person seems to have questioned that, and
there was no editorial comment about it. Did anyone get something in 626 that
was new?
In further response to Jim Downey's
question in Gram 629 about the $0.76 check from Wheelus (not Wheeling) AB, Libya;
for many years US cents were used with MPC, as mentioned by John Watta in Gram
630. Later, all transactions were rounded to the closest nickel (that's what
the PX and commissary in Heidelberg were doing when I left there in 1992, even
though we were using US coins and notes - cents were just too expensive to ship
overseas, so all facilities rounded).
In response to Trung Nguyen's query about
the difference between ration cards and currency control cards: the ration card
was to regulate how many of the controlled items you could buy in the time that
each card was valid (normally a year, but there were monthly rations for some
commodities, so if you did not use the ration in the month that it was valid
for [with a few days of grace], the unused ration expired). The currency
control cards were to keep track of the total amount of money you were
spending, so that black marketeers could be identified by their excessive
spending (over the monthly pay and allowances). Every time you spent over a certain
amount (I don't remember how much--probably $20 or $25), you had to present the
CCC with the transaction. This included (especially) buying money orders or
checks negotiable outside the MPC area. Such cards were still being used in
Korea as late as the early 1980s.
In response to the Pravda article about
"General Clay's marks" in Gram 632; does anyone know where Bizonia
is?
I note the following interesting lot in
the Memphis Lyn Knight sale: partial set of matched SN AMC lire, serial number
72. This is a number not reported in SB.
New find: Sunday at a local show, I bought
a strip of four chits as follows. seven digit SN [1859921 through ...24]
\
AMERICAN
RED CROSS
IN GT. BRITAIN
2/-
AUTO-TICKETS LTD. BIRKENHEAD
Does any reader know which war these were for? The chits are
vertical, 32x51mm, perforated horizontally between, printed in black on buff
stock. The Angus Bruce collection contains a 1/3 ticket in identical design on
gray stock.
And another: Chemical Warfare Pocket
Reference Card, RESTRICTED, imprint Hq SOS USAPP 9-43/250M/12077. Anyone know
what SOS is? This is the first such item I have seen from the WWII period. It
is black on buff, 154x102 folded in the center. It contains instructions on use
and care of the gas mask, decon instructions, decon recipes, and use of decon
agents, all on one side; and on the other side a table of chemical agents with
their physical characteristics, persistency, symptoms, protection, and first
aid (eight casualty agents, five harassing agents, and four smoke screen
agents). Quite an interesting item (the only connection to military money is
that I bought it from a paper money junk box--but not for a junk price).

MAIL CALL
Phil,
I'll have to decline the kind offer to do the 681 article. I am leaving in soon
for my summer vacation which involves camping for much of the time until the
end of July. So GRAM 681 will come up when I have no access to a computer, or
library.

Forwarded to the Gram:
Dear
Debbie & Bill,
I read your "Found in Rolls"
column in the May 13 issue of "Coin World" and found the
"U.S." and anchor on a Indian Head/Buffalo 5 Cents very
interesting. I was not in the Navy, but was in the Army and know many men
who were in the Navy. Many of these men subscribe to a free emailed
newsletter called "MPC Gram". Besides Military Payment Certificates
(MPC), the readers of the gram and the articles in it cover many other areas of
militaria. I am sure there is someone reading it who would be very
interested in adding this piece to their collection. I have cc'ed the editor
and publisher of the MPC Gram with this email, but I would request that you
contact them and write a short item for the MPC Gram about the piece and offer
it for sale to the first collector sending you an email for it. I am
really grabbing into thin air about its value, but I would not be surprised if
you could sell it for about $15.-20.00. Thank you for your interesting
column. I am not a collector of the vast majority of what you find, but I
think you guys have found a VERY interesting way to collect.
Howard
