FEATURED ARTICLE
More Odds and Ends
by Joseph
Boling
Murray Hanewich reported
yesterday on the tint shades of the Ceylon 1942 25c and 50c notes, and this
about the watermarks: "I have always assumed it was a 'hit and miss' affair.
With the watermark showing up on the note only when the alignment of paper
allowed it. Hence it would be possible to have partial, full and w/o watermark
'varieties.'" On the piece I have, the watermark is at right angles to the
inscriptions; it would be impossible to have a full watermark, because the
watermark is longer than the note is tall. Murray, are yours oriented
differently? My assumption was that the watermark repeated in a pattern that
would provide one half of the watermark in any given note. Murray, how much of
the watermark is present in each of your two pieces? Does any reader have a note
that has less than half of the watermark (either the right end or the left end,
oriented at 90 degrees to the note)?
In response to Mark Watson's generous
donation of Van Elmpt's BAFSV book to the ANA library, once I get my act
together and get my books inventoried and packed, ANA will have a pretty good
library of military and Japanese titles. I have shipped 14 cartons already, and
will take many more with me to the summer seminar in two weeks.
That fourth
printing series 481 $1 that Fred talked about yesterday is the one that a local
club member brought to a meeting, about which I wrote two months ago. He is
hoping to parlay it into a nice Educational $2 note, so bid liberally, boys and
girls.
In the
June issue of "The Retired Officer" is an article by Susumu Toyoda about
counterfeit Japanese battle flags. It seems that in the Philippines in 1944,
when the US liberation entered mop-up mode, the members of the 173rd Language
Detachment (Japanese translators supporting the intelligence office of the 37th
Infantry Division) had time on their hands. Recognizing the trading value of war
trophy "meat-ball" flags, they devised a way to create their own, using
parachute silk, red ink, and India ink. Being linguists, they could inscribe the
flags with patriotic sentiments and personal names. One day one of the bogus
flags was brought in by a third party owner to be translated; when the
detachment commander learned that it had changed hands for $150, he stopped the
counterfeiting operation. Toyoda did not say how many flags were created, but he
described the way they were made, including the ageing techniques that were
used, and he named three places where they were traded (quartermaster, Seabees,
and engineers) to obtain scarce goods and services to make the perpetrators'
lives more comfortable. So, that war trophy you own might be a super- scarce
official counterfeit. I love it!
Enough for this week--I have much to do before departing for
Memphis.
You mentioned the auction of a German
Enigma code machine in a recent Mpcgram. These have been offered several times
over the years. They are not all that uncommon.
It is my understanding that after
the end of WWII the British sold such confiscated machines to several emerging
African nations. The code-breaking techniques of WWII were still top secret, so
the African nations were told that the machines were unbreakable and could be
used with complete security. The British then commenced to read their mail for
the next 10-20 years. Of course, that could all be just an old intelligence
myth...
