Camp White POW
Camp
By Larry "Ski" Smulczenski
This is being written in a motel
room near Tupelo,
Mississippi, the night before the set up for the
Memphis
Paper Money Show. I am only about two hours
from Memphis and I plan to be up
bright and early so
that I can review some of the great notes in the
Lyn
Knight Auction. The world note lead off the auction
again at 7pm
Thursday night, so it is only the early
birds that get to see the notes. Fred
mentioned some
of the great items that at least nned to be lovingly
held
and studied.
Lot number 1291 is a set of four chits from the POW
camp at
Camp White in Oregon and is the subject of
tonight's article. Camp white was
located eight miles
north of Medford, Oregon on State Route 62 and is
the
site of present-day White City. The camp was built in
1942 and was
divided into two sections, one for
training division-size units and the other
fro
training special service forces. The camp could
accommodate over
38,000 troops. It had many buildings
and a large hospital. In August 1942,
the 91st
Infantry Division was activated and trained at Camp
White and the
96th Infantry Division trained there
later. The camp had a main prisoner of
war camp
holding close to 1200 POWs who worked for the
military. The POW
camp opened in May 1945 and closed
in May 1946. At the same time the army
vacated the
camp and turned the hospital over to the
Veterans
Administration. Much of the land and most of the
buildings went
to the country. In the post war years
most of the buildings were converted
into civilian
residences and the resulting community was named
White
City.
The four chits in the Knight auction exhibit the
serial
number 30007, the same serial number that shows
up in the Donn and Campbell
book. As a matter of fact,
chits with that serial number are the only ones
found
in collections that I know of. They are all punch
cancelled with a
hole about ¼ inch in diameter. The
booklet which held these chits probably
came from the
holdings of the printer of these chits-Hancock
Brothers of
San Francisco. The location of the chit
book itself is unknown. I have in my
collection a
similar set of four chits as offered in the Knight
auction.
All have the 30007 serial numbers.
A few weeks ago, I got a letter from
Fester Tom Koch
in response to my plea for reports of any POW items
held
in collections. Tom told e he had an empty
booklet cover from Camp White with
a different serial
number (59044). Even though the book was empty,
this
was great information, as the strips of chits stubs
remained and
careful examination can determine how
many of each value was in the booklet.
We have found
that if a one cent chit was in the series there would
be 5
strips of 25 chits in the booklet making it
usually the most common value of
a series. Tom told me
that this book was unusual in that one of the
stubs
was larger than normal, actually it was the size of an
unprinted
chit. I simply did not believe it.
Could the booklet have been in the owners
pocket when
it went through the laundry and the colors faded? I
asked to
see it so Tom mailed it to me. When it
arrived, I was amazed. There it was,
definitely a
light tan stub the size of a chit. I checked my set of
chits.
A 25c blue, 10c off white/light tan, 5c pink,
and 1c light yellow. The stubs
were definitely the
same colors-2 blue, 4 light tan, 2 pink and 2
light
yellow. This was a $5 booklet. The two strips of 25c
chits-50c and
the two strips of 1c chits 10c, totaled
$5.10. There was the answer. That
blank chit/large
strip reduced the 10c strips to $1.90 and made up for
the
tow strips of 1c chits.
I've had the opportunity to look at several
dozen
chits books and this is the first one configured this
way. Just goes
to show you that no matter how much you
think that you know, there are still
surprises out
there-if you keep
looking!

Editorial
==============================================
Phil has had an emergency
and could not fulfill his
editorial duties. Of course I am happy to help. I
am
not at liberty to disclose the nature of the emergency
because I do not
know, but I am sure that Phil knows,
that all Gramsters appreciate all that
he has done,
but also want him to take care of the important
things
first.
I am not at all sure how long you will be stuck with
me,
but we will do our best-with your help as always.
Of course your letters,
articles and other submissions
will be very much appreciated.
The first
thing that you have probably noticed is that
the format is probably not the
nice pretty one that
Phil created for us. I do not know I will be able
to
get there or not, at the moment, I am just happy to
get it
done!
This Gram is being created and sent from Memphis. The
Thursday
auction is complete. We will try to get a
report
tomorrow.
