From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 646 Date: Monday, June 17, 2002 7:03 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 646- 17 JUNE 2002 Rare Printing Found By David Seelye Today, while working on my computer, a little after 5PM my FAX machine printed out a most interesting page. There was a telephone number and FAX number along with a black and white copy of a series 472 50 cent. There were several sentences of text. " What is the value of this note? Is it a second printing? XF- No tears or obvious marks; slight fold on back. Serial C04033859C pos 1 I called immediately, and left a message. I waited until after supper and evening news had ended. Then I called Pennsylvania to talk with Mr.---- about the FAX. He is an old collector that recently got Fred's new 4th edition book, and started checking his notes. We talked for 30 minutes about the note. He has bought from Denley's and Essie Kashani in the past, but does not recall where this note came from. He did say he will check the old invoices he has to try and find out the history. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Another Memphis is in the books! I expect that we will have many reports on the show in the next few days. Please send us your stories. I feel very bad that I was not able to get any Grams out from the show. Not only was I extremely busy (like everyone), but because I had not planned on it, I could not get any computer time! I know that the format is not clean, but I will work on that too. I sure had a great time—as I always do! I will try to share some of my adventures with you here. Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL Dear Gram, Don Wagner mentioned blood chits. There is an excellent book out called "The Last Hope" by R.E. Baldwin. That book was just about WWII but had wonderful illustrations such as the currency kits issued to pilots. I corresponded with him for a while, sent him some Korean and Vietnam stuff and he is supposed to come out with a second book on the more recent wars sometime in the future. Don mentioned Desert Storm chits. Buyer beware! There are a lot of fake chits out there...or maybe instead of "fake" I should say chits that were designed for flight over the desert, but not specifically for Desert Storm. The DS chits had four serial numbers in red on the corners with a dotted line. Each was worth $25,000 in gold. The idea was that the pilot could snip off a corner to reward more than one person rather than hand the entire chit to a local who offered help. Text is in Arabic, Farsi and Kurdish. They were controlled items and had to be signed out and in after a flight. Therefore they are fairly rare. If you keep your eye out you might run across one. I have seen two or three offered for sale in the past 10 years. On another subject, I received my IBNS Journal today. If I might give myself a plug, I thought that they did a good job on my article on propaganda leaflets, and I was happy to see that one was depicted in full color on the cover. I have one more such article ready to go because the U.S. government keeps churning out reward leaflets in the form of currency. At the same time, I see a major error in the "Inside IBNS" newsletter. In the "Letters to the Editor" section a writer shows a facsimile of a British pound note and claims that it is a propaganda banknote. Wrong. Although it is true that the Germans produced one pound notes with Arabic or Italian text on the back, they did not produce that specific item as a banknote parody. In fact, it is the cover of a small propaganda magazine produced by the German propagandists. Someone has torn off the cover and passed it off as a propaganda banknote. Now to Be honest, I would easily pay $150 for that page because it looks like a banknote and I have that "completion" disease, but it is just a page, nothing more.
