============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 647- 18 JUNE 2002 Memphis Show report By Joe Boling Well, I managed to miss the M2C2 meeting, having not looked at the program past the IBNS meetings. However, nobody said anything to me about it, either, until after the fact. It seems my absence let Fred purchase another MPC carton cheap. The show started off with a bang with the world paper auction on Thursday night. I was interested in only three lots, all of which I was able to buy, but only one was directly related to military affairs--the Thai series 8 20 baht note (the one that looks like MPC). I was recently able to acquire a group of counterfeits of several denominations of that series, so I have been looking for genuine examples of them. I discovered that they aren't easy to find, and prices are up, especially for the 20 and 100 baht notes. Fortunately, I needed only one signature variety of each. Even though I have several counterfeits, they are all the same signature pair. Much harder to find have been series 4 notes, which pre-date the war. I want them because there are some official counterfeits in that series (they were written up in the IBNS Journal several years ago and mentioned briefly in SB). I have not been able to find ANY notes in the three denominations of interest, let alone the war-time official fakes (which I expect to be much scarcer than the pre-war emissions). Do any readers have any of the official fakes? Even though I was not buying many SB notes, I was watching the results of the bidding. I had marked about fifty lots to check prices realized on for updating SB. The first one was lot 42, a Camp Hay 6 pence note (the type with all the sheep on it). Against an estimate of $1350-1850, it was hammered down at $810 to the book. This happens to be exactly 60% of the low estimate. An interesting aspect of Lyn Knight's sales is that 60% of low estimate is the minimum bid. Now, if someone placed a bid at that level on the internet, it was sold to that bidder. However, whether anyone bid on the internet or not, the lot was offered to the room at the next advance over the opener. This means that there is an advantage to internet bidding if a lot is gong to sell low. The lowest price you can buy it for on the floor is not as low as you can buy it for on-line. So, if you know you are going to want a lot, and plan to attend the sale, make that first bid online before you leave home (internet bidding stops 24 hours before the live sale). Two of the five lots that I bought came to me at the first advance. I have no idea whether there were any on-line bids on them, but if not I might have had them at 60% if I had started the bidding online. Back to prices realized--the next lot was a one penny chit from the Australian Defence canteen at Camp 7. It brought $900 (all prices I report here exclude the 15% buyers fee, which would push that $900 up to $1035). I was surprised that nobody bid on the Djibouti 20 francs note (P15). The highpowered lots of Cassa Mediterranea notes seem not to have sold (we can't know for sure until the PRL is issued, which might actually be on the web site already, but I have not had time to look). The Fanning Island complete note in F/VF sold for $445, about four times the SB level. The Fiji one pound on New Zealand pound, SB1376b in chVF (but with tape marks on the corners) sold for $435, again 3-4 times SB. On the other hand, two E A Wright French Guiana 100 franc notes (SB1236a and b) sold for just about SB levels, so not everything is taking off. But--the German 1948 5 mark note as a G-G replacement in F+ sold for $850, again about four times SB. The same note with the stamped B for Berlin (not a replacement) brought $100 in EF--close to SB. The 10 and 20 mark notes with stamped B brought $120 (aEF) and $260 (AU+). The Guadeloupe E A Wright 500 francs SB 1404a and b seem not to have sold at $900 (VG/fine) and $1800 (F/VF), both levels substantially under SB. A Hong Kong $5 duress note (with added four-digit control number) sold for $390 in chVF, substantially below SB. Italian AMC 500 lire (EF/AU) and 1000 lire (aEF and aAU) sold for $200, ($180), and $250, respectively--pretty close to SB (the figure in parentheses representing a lot that may not have sold, at the 60% level). Netherlands East Indies 500 gulden SB5109 in VF with ugly graffiti brought $300 (above the low estimate), a bit above SB levels. Reunion "France Libre" 100 francs in AU/unc seemed unsold at $750, well over SB--the consignor seems to have rose- colored glasses. A Tangier 50 centime chit SB102C brought $450 in VG, six times SB before the juice. I had a couple of those back when I was still collecting north Africa; I never expected to see them at these levels. The Thai 1 baht series 8 (SB 81r) in aFine seemed unsold at $720. The 20 baht in ch EF/AU barely opened at $250, and the 100 baht in AU-unc seemed to be unsold at $390. More rose-colored glasses. And more another day. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Phil is staying in Albany where his father is hospitalized. I did not feel comfortable informing you until today when I was able to speak to Phil for the first time since last week. He assured me that it was OK for me to tell about the family illness and I took it upon myself to wish Phil, his father and entire family the very best during this trying time on behalf of all Gramsters. I will certainly pass along any news that I receive. For any of you who may have gotten in the habit of sending Gram mail to Phil's personal address-stop. Send it to MPCGram@yahoo.com.
