Supported by Muscatine’s Art Center, Community College, Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, the gathering offers participants an exciting list of speakers, including keynote speaker Lewis Carlson (professor emeritus of history at Western Michigan University), who with panelist Norbert Haase (a Dresden museum director) wrote "We Were Each Other’s Prisoners/Warten auf Freiheit", an oral history which mirrors TRACES’ vision and the conference’s theme. Additional panelists include Heino Erichsen (once a German soldier and POW, he now heads a Texas-based international adoption agency), Howard Hong (a retired professor of philosophy who toured most Midwestern POW camps during WWII as representative of the War Prisoners Aid of the World YMCA) and Mike Waters (a Texas A & M anthropology professor who heads POW-camp excavations). The Monday Film Night will feature Sharon Young (maker of History Channel’s excellent [if misnamed] documentary "Nazi POWs in America"), Camilla Calamandrei (invited,) and other POW-film makers, including Steven Balvanz and Michael Schaubach of Fly-Over Films. A TRACES Bookshop will offer participant’s access to related yet hard-to-find materials. The University of Northern Iowa and Muscatine Community College are offering credits for college students. For more information or to REGISTER to attend, visit http://www.eicc.edu/mcc/pows.html or contact Kari Allen at either ksallen@eiccd.cc.ia.us or 1-888-336-3907; reach the Muscatine Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-25-PEARL. Feller and Smulczenski and I certainly plan to attend and hopefully Feller and Smulczenski will make presentations. This will be an opportunity to spread the word about numismatics to others interested in history who may not have ever thought of money as important numismatic relics. To top it off, if we can get enough participation we will have a swap fest in my room on Saturday evening. Probably we can come up with some other innovations too. What do you think? Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL ============================================== Congratulations to Marcus Turner, appointed to the board of the IBNS at the recently held IPMS in Memphis, Tn. Marcus is one of the 12 original festers attending the first Fest, 2000, and one of three that was instrumental in the 691/701 notes being made available to collectors. He is also the contact person for all the donations to the Fest Scholarship Fund. With his varied interests in paper money collecting his appointment will be a great asset to the collecting community. Get involved and support the IBNS and the Fest Scholarship Fund.
