From: "Fred Schwan" To: Subject: MPCGram 649 Date: Thursday, June 20, 2002 10:14 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 649- Thurski 20 JUNE 2002 Memphis!!! By by Larry Smulczesnki Memphis 2002 has come and gone. Although others have addressed the subject, I feel I too have to get my two cents in about the show. The International Paper Money Show at Memphis is always a great event that quite a few collectors look forward to attending year after year. There are always great items to see on the floor and usually at least one or two new finds that are discovered or shown at this show. I got to Memphis about 0930 last Thursday and immediately went to the Lyn Knight Auction Lot Viewing room to review some of the treasures that would go under the hammer that night. The room was packed with several dozen folks doing the same thing I wanted to do. I had looked at the first four hundred lots and was drooling over the Cassa Mediterranea notes for Egypt, when Fred Schwan walked in and we proceeded going through the next thousand lots together. That set of notes for Egypt was every bit as spectacular as we said it was, maybe even more so. One thing that we didn’t pick up on from the catalog was that the word Campione (Specimen) printed on the notes are perfectly registered from the front to the back, i.e. the back of the note has the mirror image of the front and they appear to be applied at the same time. We were not familiar with what printing process would accommodate this. The two similar sets for Greece and the Ionian Islands were also very spectacular when you view them up close. Campione is also printed on these sets in a similar manner as described above. On the Grecian set, the word Compione was also perforated into the notes preceded and followed by a star with a hole in the center. Unfortunately, it does not appear that any of these lots found new homes at the auction and probably were returned to the original owner. By the way, I obtained a copy of a new Italian book that supposedly was released at Maastricht authored by Guido Crapanzano and Ermelindo Giulianini entitled La Cartamoneta Italiana. This book has lovely color photographs of selected Italian notes including these three sets and the Sudan set plus Italian AMC, the BMA set for Tripolitania, the North Africa Silver Certificates and other military notes. The perforations I mentioned above can be seen on some of the illustrations. This is a great book and if you have an interest in these notes you should have a copy. There were other spectacular notes that we at least had a chance to examine closely. The $5 Foreign Trade Payment Certificate, the specimen set of Irish Lady Lavery notes, the Philippine Pasteups from the American Banknote Company and others were all magnificent. The Auction began promptly at 1900 hours. There was the pre-auction feast that Lyn Knight always throws. It consisted of turkey breast slices and pasta cooked on site. Fantastic. The Canadian notes appeared to be very strong to me. The one piece of Canadian POW scrip in the auction was hammered at $1400 plus juice against a $750 to $1000 estimate. Thats a nice price for a chit. I did not do as well as I did in the CPMX auction. I did get a 1948 Special Army Currency note from Germany with a perforated “B” for Berlin that I didn’t have, also the blue 5c FTPC chit and a group of POW chits from Crossville, Tennessee that had a 3c value. The others I was interested in, I was outbid on. I also want to mention the exhibit submitted by Gramster Marcus Turner. I believe it was entitled “Financing World War II in the Soviet Union” or something very close to that. Marcus showed both the colorful Russian Lottery War Bonds and the extremely rare Coupon bonds as well as the wartime lottery tickets. He did an outstanding job of researching the bonds and even had photographs of the military aircraft and tanks that appear on the bonds. He was awarded the IBNS’s Amon Carter Award for the best Foreign Paper Money exhibit. Congratulations Marcus. Gramster Steve Feller gave a presentation on Iowa Prisoner of War Camps at the IBNS General Membership meeting. Steve has always been interested in the Algona Camp and has done a great job of digging up information about that site. This time he had actual photographs of some of the buildings, including the canteen where the chits were used, pictures of the prisoners at work and play and a report written by the camp commander. He also showed chits from Clarinda, the other base camp in Iowa. This was the first time that chits from that location were seen by those of us in the audience. He also showed some expedient chits that were used at sub camps and overprinted on a chit from a post exchange. This was a great presentation. Finally at the M2C2 meeting, Marvin Mericle made the announcement that his award winning MPC collection will be sold via auction possibly at next years CPMX. How can you top that for exciting news coming out of Memphis? ANA NEGOTIATES LOWER HOTEL RATES FOR NEW YORK CONVENTION The American Numismatic Association (ANA) has negotiated even lower room rates—as much as 13 percent—for the two New York City hotels the Association selected for its World’s Fair of Money®, July 31 to August 4. “We have been successful in reducing hotel room costs even more at both the Marriott Marquis Hotel, site of the show, and the nearby Milford Plaza Hotel,” says ANA convention Services Manager Brenda Bishop. “There is a lot of competition among New York hotels to attract guests, which helped the ANA obtain better room rates for those coming to the show. These reductions will apply to existing and new reservations. “Because 96 percent of our room blocks in both hotels have been sold, I encourage those planning to attend the ANA’s show in New York to make their reservation soon,” Bishop adds. Room rates at the Marriott Marquis Hotel have been reduced from $220 (single occupancy) and $240 (double) to $209 (single/double). The single/double occupancy room rate for the Milford Plaza Hotel has been reduced from $125 a night to $115. Call the hotels directly and make reservations by July 6, 2002, to receive the ANA discounted prices. The Marriott Marquis Hotel can be reached at 212/398-1900. The Milford Plaza Hotel can be reached at 212/869-3600. Bishop says her department is investigating additional hotels for those unable to acquire reservations at either the Marriott Marquis or Milford Plaza. Attendees should contact the ANA Convention Department for assistance in making alternate arrangements. The ANA also has arranged for airfare discounts of 5 to 15 percent on Delta Air Lines (call Delta Meeting Network® Reservations at 1-800-241-6760 and refer to File No. 182323A) and 5- to 10-percent discounts on United Airlines (call United Meeting Specialists at 1-800-521-4041 and refer to ID# 500BX). For more information about the ANA World’s Fair of Money 2002, contact the ANA Convention Department, 818 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903-3279; telephone 719/632-2646; fax 719/634-4085; E-mail convention@money.org; or visit the ANA web site at www.money.org. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== I am still recovering from Memphis. I have not even looked at the treasures that I picked up there and have to crash to get ready for the seminar. It will be a great time, but at this moment it just does not seem possible that I will be able to get everything ready for this event. You will hear lots more about the seminar in the days to come. If I do not make any reports leading up to it, we certainly expect to have several from Colorado Springs. One of the subtle pleasures of the event is the incredibly high-speed internet connection that is available to students. It is by far the fastest that I have ever experienced. Of course that is a minor thing compared to the opportunity to be immersed in numismatics for a full week (or two). It is indeed a great event and with the advent of the military money course, there is no excuse for you not to go! We look forward to seeing you there next year! Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL ============================================== Dear Fred, I don't know what you have been doing this past week or so, BUT, I am receiving the Gram in a format that's READABLE! Previously, it was 5-6 monitor screens wide and I had to arrow back and forth in order to read it, OR copy and paste it to something else, and it would shrink it to a 'normal' size for me to read.
