From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram@yahoo.com Date: Saturday, June 22, 2002 9:32 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 650- Friday 21 JUNE 2002 Emergency Money In Afghanistan Submitted by Herb Friedman The latest issue of Army Times states that due to a lack of small change in Afghanistan the the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) has issued cardboard coins in the value of 5, 10 and 25 cents. The half-dollar sized coins have the denomination and text reading "Gift Certificate," and "AAFES" on one side. On the other side the denomination is shown with text "This gift certificate has a retail value of 5 cents (or 10 or 25) and is redeemable only at your BX/PX." What is interesting is that the PX system is worldwide and apparently any PX will accept the cardboard tokens as real money. An Army Exchange system spokesman stated that he expected many of the "pogs" to disappear as they will be considered collectables. Chit Heads By Tom Koch "I will trade trade you a PFCOM Navy No. 3923 $ .05 for a PFCOM 3245 .05." What in the heck are these two military currency collectors talking about? The topic is chits; specifically those used (in this case at several Pacific Fleet Commissioned Officer Messes) at disguised U. S. Navy locations during WWII and after. Navy No. 3923 and 3245 denoted Yokosuku, Honshu, Japan and Saipan Island, Marianas Islands respectively and was the only "unit identifier" on the chits and chit books. The disguised FPO addresses were used so that if mail was captured there was no way to determine troop strength, unit location and other usable intelligence data. A listing of these disguised Navy FPO addresses is located at: http://www.history.navy.mil/books/OPNAV20-P1000/NN.htm As you may guess, I have more than a casual interest in chits. I have found it to be an excellent adjunct to collecting MPC for several reasons. First, the historical aspect of chits is that most of the time branch of service and location is identified. Other times the mess treasurer and the individual issued the chits is identified along with other notations. An example to discuss briefly is a chit book from United States Enlisted Men's Club, 17 Hupeh Road, Tsingtao, China. This is a $1.00 chit book with $.05 cent chit. Tsingtao was a major operating base of the U.S. Navy between V.J. day and some time in 1948 when the communist takeover resulted in U.S. forces leaving China. There is even a picture of the club printed on the chits. The chit book is numbered 079666 * which gives you a rough idea that there were more than a few of these issued to the sailors of the ships and stations at Tsingtao during that three year period. If you are following someone's footsteps around the world; you can often find chits from some of the bases this person was stationed at or visited. In my case, being a Navy man, I have chits from Naval Training Center, San Diego; Norfolk, Virginia; Yokosuka, Japan; Port Everglades, Fla; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Honolulu, Hawaii; and Treasure Island, Ca. There are many more places that I have been that I don't have chits from than those that I do. The focus of your chit collecting can be as broad or as narrow as you want. A narrow area might be collecting Red Cross Chits or Rest Camp chits. The most obvious example of a large area of chit collecting is POW chits which has the added blessing of having a comprehensive reference work by Lance Campbell and another reference book in work by Larry Smulczenski. Several ideas for focus are: branch of service (enlisted or officer), specific theater of operations, or specific units. Several narrow areas that I collect are chits identified to specific Naval vessels and chits from clubs and messes denominated in yen, lira, marks, etc. If you want to see a sampler of chits; get a copy of Ruth Hill's "Trial Listing of Military Chits". If you so desire, send me your snail mail address and I could send you a copy. Lastly, there is a unique camaraderie amongst chit collectors. Since chits and chit books are much less numerous than MPC; if you want to expand your collection; then trading is often an excellent way to do so. I have had a long term "trading" relationship with one of the gramsters. Part of the camaraderie is that you have to put up with some really bad jokes like: "Chit happens," "Chit head," and "This is no chit." Thanks for reading my shameless plug to recruit some "chit heads" chit on! ============================================== Editorial ============================================== For many people, the summer is a slow time with their collections. For me it is a very busy time. Starting with Memphis, my schedule is jammed. ANA Seminar then ANA convention, book projects there is no end to it! That is great! I hope to be able to make frequent reports about all of these things in the weeks to come. I hope that I will see you some where along the road and also hope that you can share some of your hobby adventures with us as Tom has above. Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL Dear Gram. To all who have extended their heartfelt thanks for my father. A sincere thank you! We are expecting him to be released Monday or Tuesday, with no unforeseen complications. Best Wishes, Philip M. Goldstein Dear Gram As any good IOWEGIAN knows, Muscatine (at J3 on the map) is south of Moscow, northeast of Fruitland, West of Illinois City, and east of Lone Tree and Nicholas. For those traveling by river, it is located at Dam #16, just up from Dam # 17 and Lake Charles. Glad to help. Rusty Fred, Hope to be at the Co. Springs Coin Show on Saturday. Hope to get a chance to meet you. I will try to bring my 481 $1 4th printing CU for you too see if you like! How about an M2C2 meeting in the Springs? By the way I'm about 275 miles N/NE of the springs and we have been following the fires closely down there (My son is a tech director at KUSA channel 9 in Denver). If anyone has respriatory problems all that smoke would not be good for them. Over 120,000 acres have burned. It could get worse in the next few days with 90+ temperatures, low humidity and almost no rain. Larry Gibbs Dear Larry, A M2C2 meeting sounds like a good idea. Warner Talso is giving a talk at the show on MPC collecting. We will make that an informal M2C2 meeting. You are in charge!
