From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 657 Date: Saturday, June 29, 2002 10:03 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 657-Saturday 29 JUNE 2002 News Flash Colorado Springs--Krause Publications, publisher of Bank Note Reporter and other numismatic periodicals, has been sold! The news spread like wildfire through the summer seminar in Colorado Springs. Few details are available at this time, but reports from Iola (via ANA executive director Ed Rochette) are that the Bank Note Reporter (and other publications) will continue without interruption and, possibly, unaffected. Seminar Scholarship Update By Marcus Turner Finally it is Official! Three scholarships have been awarded for the 2002 ANA Summer Seminar (military money class). We would like to than everyone who supported this year’s scholarship: Dave Amey, Gail Baker, Keith and Sue Bauman, Doug Bell, Bay Bows, Angus Bruce, Carlson Chambliss, Ort Cowles, Guido Crapanzano, Mike Cummings, Howard A. Daniel, III, Sam Feeback, Steve Feller, George Fitzgerald, Dick Freyser, Al Glaser, Philip M. Goldstein, Wes Hardy, Rod Hardy, Gary Hicks, Ed Hoffman, Tom Koch, Harold Kroll, Tim Kyzivat, Jack Lippincott, Kevin Maloy, Ian Marshall, Leo May, R. A. Medina, Marv Mericle, Mr. 691, John Pettit, Bruce Potter, Gene Ryan, Nick Schrier, Fred Schwan, David Seelye, Joel Shafer, Neil Shafer, Larry Smulczenski, Warner Talso, Marcus Turner, Russ Walsh, Tom Warburton, Mark Watson, Pam West, John & Nancy Wilson, Bill Yanchick We also want to have extend a big thank you to three donors who have outdone themselves over the past two years both in terms of financial and promotional support. It is for this reason that we are awarding this year’s scholarships in the name of Mr. 691, Mr. David Seelye and Mr. Guido Crapanzano. We are very fortunate to have such generous persons involved in our community. This years recipients for 2002 are: Robert Kutcher Lincoln, Nebraska Robert is currently a Governor of the Central States Numismatic Society and actively writes for the Lincoln Coin Club Newsletter, Nebraska Numismatic Association Newsletter and Armenian Numismatic Journal. He has won several awards for numismatic literature and is an active exhibit judge. David Seelye North Chili, New York David is well known (sometimes notoriously) within the military numismatics community over the past few years. His expertise is varied across the different permutations of military numismatics. He collects MPC Fest Money, military training money and perhaps best known for his obsession with SOS notes. Dave will certainly be a contributor to the content of the course. Frank Clark Carrollton, Texas Frank is the President of the Society of Paper Money Collectors and has been involved in too many numismatic organizations to mention. It will be exciting to have the leadership of SPMC involved in the course. At last count there were 10 persons enrolled in the course. It should be a GREAT event. Overall it has been a very successful year for the scholarship thanks to the contributions of everyone. Please take a look at the donor list and take time to recognize/patronize/support those who support our community. Do Not Put Off Until Tomorrow By Howard A. Daniel III Whenever I am on a trip in the U.S. or overseas, I carry my IBM ThinkPad and/or Palm with my Outlook address file in it. At each location, I often do a search on that area in my file and see who lives within a short distance. I do not have a telephone number for everyone, so when I have none, I take a taxi to the address and knock on the door. Most of the collectors are very enthusiastic about my visiting them, and all of the rest are at least happy about it. The enthusiastic ones are those who have no one else to share their collecting addiction with, and here walks in Howard looking for something to look at and they almost handcuff me to a chair. Here in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), I found Keith Brewer and John Baldry in my file. Nothing is usually easy here in Southeast Asia, so I hired a motorcycle to drive me to Keith Brewer's address, which was an international school. The first person told me that he had transferred to another school, so I asked for the address. When I saw it was half way to Bien Hoa in a foreign industrial park, I asked them to please call there and ask for him. When they did, they found he had resigned and gone back to somewhere in the United States. No points for me with this collector. I gave my driver the second address for John Baldry, which was a computer school. It was on a side street that was almost an alley, so it took awhile to find it. Riding a motorcycle saved me a lot of time trying to make u-turns and walking down narrow streets! When I got to the school, the receptionist told me he had transferred to another branch of the school. The address she gave me was near the international school, so we almost retraced our drive across the city. When I walked up to the receptionist and asked for John, she started crying. What did I do or say wrong? A young man came up to her and asked what was wrong. He then told me that John had died and his Thai wife had left the country with his remains. Wow, this was really bad. Last year when I was here, I put off seeing both of these collectors and told myself that I will see them next time. Now I know that when I have time, I must make an effort to visit every collector within a reasonable distance of my hotel. There is no telling how much time I have left here, let alone the other collectors and/or researchers. I am still in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and using an Internet cafe to write this to you. I have been doing tons of research and collecting for myself and a little for some others too, but I have also just about completed the paperwork to buy a townhouse here. At a later date, I will be living in it during the U.S. cold months of the year, and living in my Chesapeake Bay House in Virginia during the warm months. What a life! My next stop after Viet Nam is Memphis for the International Paper Money Show, so I hope to see all of you there! ============================================== Editorial ============================================== We have received several reports that Gram 654 is missing in action. It does exist, but I cannot confirm that it was ever sent. It includes some very good infomation. I will try to get it out in the next few days. At this point it presents some interesting technological roadblocks. Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL Dear Gram, You mentioned the auction of a German Enigma code machine in a recent Mpcgram. These have been offered several times over the years. They are not all that uncommon. It is my understanding that after the end of WWII the British sold such confiscated machines to several emerging African nations. The code-breaking techniques of WWII were still top secret, so the African nations were told that the machines were unbreakable and could be used with complete security. The British then commenced to read their mail for the next 10-20 years. Of course, that could all be just an old intelligence myth...
