The pace has been high speed, with lively discussions that demonstrate the diversity of interests and expertise in the class. All issued (and known unissued) MPC series have been reviewed, ending with samples of error notes, radars, swims, and other fancy notes. The highlight was a swimmer. The Series 611 $10 serial number is H00069000. The serial number reads the same in normal and inverted orientation which makes it a swims note. Even though this note is illustrated in the MPC book, it was entirely different to see it in person. Robert Drew organized an impromptu grading class that was held after hours. It was very enlightening. Joe Boling had the class grade ten notes as a practical exercise. Joe presented the IBNS grading criteria and Mark Hotz, columnist for the Bank Note Reporter, discussed the U.S Dealers grading philosophy. It was clear that there are two different sets of critiera. Mark summarized the discussion nicely by observing that we should buy the note--not the grade! The trading in Series 100 AFC (Allied Fest Certificates) continues to be spirited. David Seelye has not yet realized his goal of owning ALL the certificates, but continues his quest. The old-timers tolerate David's obsession with amusement and the new-comers look on with puzzlement and not a little apprehension of what crazy world they have got themselves into. Tomorrow the seminar widens it's scope and begins discussion of other military numismatics, starting with AMC. Upcoming ANA Convention in NYC by Howard A. Daniel III I have seen several wrong dates for this convention, to include in the MPC Gram. July 30 is PNG Day and you will need an invitation from a PNG-member dealer to attend, so it is not the first day of the ANA. July 31 is the first day of the ANA. You will need no invitation, or will it cost you anything to attend it and its events. The first day has no event of interest to me, but I do have to set up and man a joint club table for Numismatics International/International Bank Note Society (NI/IBNS). Throughout the convention, I invite all Gramsters to visit the table in a hallway outside the bourse. You can leave messages there, meet others there, make it your home at the convention, etc. You can also volunteer a couple of hours at the table for me so I can also visit the bourse, or even join one or both of the societies. The second day is August 1 and there are several interesting events. The first is the Numismatic Literary Guild (NLG) Symposium at 10AM in the Ziegfeld Room. Many of the writers you know in the MPC Gram and other numismatic publications are members of this organization. Then there is the Singapore Mint Press Conference at 11AM in the Gilbert Room. My area is Southeast Asia and many of the people working at this mint are friends of mine, so I cannot miss their press conference. At 1PM in the Ziegfeld Room is the Numismatic Bibliomania Society (NBS) Symposium. If you like numismatic references of any kind, this is the society for you. My fellow members have found many important references for me over many years. Check these people out! Then the ANA Life Members Reception at 4:40PM in the Sky Lobby on the 16th floor. This is a nice extra benefit for life members and I have introduced myself to many numismatic greats at these receptions. The World Series of Numismatic - Young Collectors is at 6PM in the O'Neill Room. I have taken a special interest in seeing how I can bring more new collectors into numismatics and especially into areas of my interest. You can do this at other shows and conventions too. The last event of the day is the infamous NLG Bash at 9:30PM in the Cantor Room. You can attend this without being a member but you need to buy a ticket that day or one of the few that will be available at the door. This is a great numismatic event and you will meet many numismatic writers there who are also regular writers for the MPC Gram! The second day of the ANA is Friday, August 2. Besides manning the NI/IBNS table, I will also attend the NBS meeting at 11:30AM, where I can again meet many numismatic book collectors. Krause and Mishler of Krause Inc. fame are giving a talk about their life in numismatics at 1PM in the Empire Room. Did I hear that they sold the company to someone? Then there is ANA Membership Reception at 2:30PM on the 16th floor in the Sky Lobby. One of my favorite people is Chuck Optiz of the International Primitive Money Society. This society's meeting is at 2:30PM in the Ziegfeld Room and Chuck is always interesting and has something new for me to learn about Southeast Asia. Then I am back to the NI/IBNS club table for the rest of the day or on the bourse, if I can find someone to man the table for me. Saturday morning on August 3 is my busiest day of the convention. I am moderating both the NI and IBNS meetings! IBNS has their meeting at 11AM in the Olmstead Room and it is followed at noon by the NI meeting. I would very much like to see members from both societies and Gramsters attend both meetings. You will find many new friends at both meetings! I will try to attend the SPMC meeting at 10AM, but if I do, I will have to skip out early to set up for NI and IBNS. The YN Exhibiting Program meeting at 2PM on the 7th floor balcony is another place where I can learn how to help new and/or young collectors to get started in numismatics. This afternoon is when I usually schedule to meet collectors coming to the convention. Then it is back to my room to change into a suit when the bourse is closed. Yes, I do own a suit. The ANA Reception starts at 7PM in the foyer outside the Marquis Ballroom for an hour. This event and the banquet require a ticket! Then the ANA Banquet starts at 8PM inside the ballroom. My seat is usually at the same table with several Gramsters and with Nancy Green, the ANA Librarian. Nancy is a great lady to know as a friend and she can also help you find that reference you need from ANA Library, which also now include the U.S. part of the IBNS Library. There are always several gifts for the attendees and I have found the gifts to equal the cost of the ticket, and often beat the cost! It is a great time, and I am often surprised that the food and drink are good too. The last day of the convention is Sunday, August 4. It is a short day and close down starts at noon, so do not plan to see anyone for any length of time on this day. I will be packing up the NI/IBNS stuff at the club table and taking it to my Honda CR-V and driving home to Virginia. I will be home that night and working on my Southeast Asia column for World Coin News before midnight. That is if I am still employed as a writer by the new owners of Krause Publications, if they have been sold. SEE YOU AT THE ANA! ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Today was another exhilarating day at the MPC Seminar. (See Warner's report above). A possibly interesting variety was found by sharp eyed David Seelye when he was studying MPC Series 481 replacements. He noticed some inconsistencies in the serial numbering. Then he and Joe (Boling) interrupted the class by examining the discovery piece and other available examples. It seems that on at least some notes the final four digits of the serial number are different than any others that have ever been observed. Furthermore on this same note and a few others the serial number numerals are grouped into two units rather than being consistent. Let me try again. An exaggerated example is D1234 5678. This is a very interesting situation it requires more study. Please have a look at your 481 notes!
