From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 660 Date: Tuesday, July 02, 2002 8:47 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 660-Tuesday 2 July 2002 Day 3 ANA Summer Session Colorado Springs, CO by Warner Talso Today we discussed AMC. There was a particularly stimulating discussing on AM Marks and how disagreements with the Soviets affected the course of the Cold War. The Finance Office was open from 0430 to 0440 this morning purchasing AFC (Allied Fest Certificates). This announcement was made at 0900. There was considerable disgruntlement among the students. As a result there was a partial travel pay that eased the financial burdens of those involved. Trading of notes was furious. Be advised there were no serial number 2s. This evening we were treated to an outstanding presentation by Joe Boling on Counterfeiting World Paper Money. Joe displayed many counterfeit notes along side corresponding genuine notes. It was an extremely effective way of demonstrating the many ways of creating counterfeit notes. He covered the following major areas: Why make counterfeits? Purposes range from defrauding the public to to undermining an economy to defrauding collectors! Approaches to counterfeiting include those hastily done by amateurs, to those done carefully by professionals to those using the actual origional processes done by governments. Examples demonstrated the range of effectiveness of the various methods. Kinds of counterfeits include raised notes done by pen and ink, to face to back switching. Modern counterfeiters can cope with security features such as watermarks and physical inclusions in the paper. As Joe says, "what one person can invent, another can copy." Report from Colorado Springs by Joe Boling Being here at ANA to teach the Military Numismatics course for a week, my mind has been on military notes more than usually. Herewith reports of new finds in this field. From Memphis, a new version of the US $10 1934 Italian propaganda note, SB411, p397 (serial F05934811A with Italian back). It appears that there must be at least six versions of this piece (plus the one(s) of the same serial with the Arabic back(s)). Fred and I have now seen Italian pieces with three codes on the lower left back: I/2 (this newly discovered piece), I/5, and I/6. The text on this piece starts "Corispos?o agli emigrati...." The ? in the first word falls on a damaged spot (the overall grade is "very wretched"). Does any reader have a better example of this piece? Another new piece is a British pound (SB page 165) with the face of SB191/193, but a new message in Arabic. This one has nine lines of text and no code number/letter. Yet another is a North Vietnamese 50 xu note (being away from my library I can't look it up to see whether it is actually NVN, VC, or some other entity--the lead line of the title is Uy Ban Trung Uong). It is stamped on the back, in a large rectangle, COMPLIMENTS OF / THE ROBIN HOODS, with a shield in the center bearing 173rd AHC on a ribbon running lower left to upper right, a crossbow at lower right on the shield, and an unidentifiable device (a seashell?) at upper left on the shield. I assume this is 173rd Assault Helicopter Co. In Ray Bows' first edition of his Vietnam Lore book in the ANA library, there is no 173rd AHC listed as serving in VN. This would have to be the organic company assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade, a separate brigade that served in An Khe (if I am remembering Bows' writeup accurately). Now, does this really qualify as a propaganda note? The only people likely to understand the overstamp are those who prepared and subsequently dropped it. I wonder if the notes bearing the stamp could still be used in the economy by finders, or if they had to turn them in or hide them to avoid reprisals from the VC/NVA (not to mention reprisals from the ARVN if they were caught with the pieces in any form). Don't forget that Warner Talso will be giving an MPC talk Saturday afternoon at the Colorado Springs coin show. If you can't make it to that, there is also the main museum exhibit on the American Indian, including some series 692 MPC ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Yesterday I started the editorial this way: "Today was another exhilarating day at the MPC Seminar. (See Warner's report above)." Well, I can see no reason to change that intro because it is 100% true. Warner exaggerated that travel pay was issued BECAUSE of the complaints. That is hardly the case. It was paid because it was due, but, yes, the troops were pleased to receive it (the pay). One exciting discovery in the travel pay was discovered by Robert Kutcher. It was a 200 yen star note serial number 00000002*. Nice to be sure and David Seelye tried hard to obtain the note for a collector who collects number two notes. However, the number two was not the discovery nor the exciting part. The note is a mismatched denomination and even that is an understatement. The large denomination on the face and back both clearly state the 200 yen denomination. However, the other denominations on the face are 20, yes TWENTY! The discovery sent Seelye on a quest. He found one other 200 yen star in the hands of students. (His own hands!) It had the same mismatched denominations! He then searched all other available 200 yen notes (not too many available as the top denomination) and found that all of the pieces available for examination had correct matches. The error appears to be only on the stars AND on all stars, but that is not at all certain. Comments from finance authorities about the source of the error and any possibly impact on the integrity of the series were not available at press time. On other matters, the value of the yen dropped steadily through the day. Max, the only young numismatist in the course, observed that this drop in the value of the yen might necessitate a move on the part of finance authorities. Again, no comments were available from finance headquarters. Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL =============================================== Dear Gram, Sounds like you are having a great time in Colorado Springs. I reminds me of a true story that you might want to relay to those in attendance. While I was stationed at the Air Force Academy back in the early 70's I received a call from a person who was stationed at Fort Carson that they had some military scrip for sale. I had a small collection of MPC at that time but I was always looking for new pieces to add to my collection. I thus paid them a visit. To make a long story short, I purchase almost a full 100 piece pack of every denomination of one series. I don't recall the series without checking my records stored in my garage. I saved about 10 notes of each denomination for my collection and turned around and sold the balance of the lot to I believe one of the Gramsters who I believe was stationed in Ft. Leavenworth at the time. Hindsight says I should have saved all the notes. On the other hand I was about to get married and I could not afford to have this amount invested in, at that time, a relatively unknown part of the hobby. I still have the notes and others in my safe deposit box and still married to the same wonderful person for 29 years. See you in New York City. Gary Lewis ANA Vice President Dear Gary, Series 681, thank you.
