From: "Douglas Bell" To: "MPCgram" Subject: Re: MPCGram 664 Date: Monday, July 08, 2002 5:55 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 664-Saturday 6 July 2002 Colorado Springs Coin Show Report by Fred Schwan The Colorado Springs Coin Club has an ideal situation. Four hundred serious numismatists descend on the city for two weeks in June/July. What self respecting coin club would not have a show during the intervening weekend? The show is now such an institution that it is included in the summer seminar schedule. It is a nice show. I do not know how many dealers are in attendance, but the hall is packed with dealers and quite a few customers too. As hard as I tried, I could not find any sleepers to cherry pick although, of course, I was able to spend some money with George Warner and a few others. It was an altogether good time. See additional report below. Gibbs, Talso Show off As part of the Colorado Springs Coin Club coin show, Warner Talso gave a presentation on collecting MPC. This "lecture" had been arranged by General Gail Baker (see mail bag) and Tom Hallenbeck (of the coin club). In spite of an apparent lack of promotion, the program was excellent, and attendance actually quite good. Ten people assembled representing all age ranges, genders, and levels of interest. Most importantly, all ten remained throughout the program in spite of interference from custodial and maintenance personnel and otherwise undesirable conditions--it was great. Larry Gibbs was in attendance (mentioned in an earlier Gram). He taunted collectors in the audience with his fourth printing Series 481 $1 certificate. When the program was completed, a drawing was held for a fourth edition MPC book. Instead of tickets, everyone had a military payment certificate. Warner then tossed a coin to determine if the lowest or highest serial number would win the book. Lisa Underwood won the book. She was most pleased and arranged to trade it in for a collectors edition. She then got her husband into the program, and finally bought some MPC. Now they are both Gramsters! Welcome! ============================================== Editorial ============================================== The second session of the summer seminar is about to start. Joe (Boling) and I are both taking Peter Huntoon's class on national bank notes. I am looking forward to it. While I will be thinking nationals during the day, I have many MPC/miliary money projects to work on at night and even during lunch hour. I expect to be able to make some research progress with the help of the ANA library and staff. Then of course there is the unfortunate selection of roommates are described by Mark Watson below. Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL =============================================== Dear Gram, The other day I mentioned that I had data on the items that Joe mentioned. By coincidence I was upgrading my computer files today (I throw out better stuff than some people keep :-) and came across the data in question. So, let me go just a bit deeper. There are 8 Italian-language propaganda statements found on German-made US $2 and 10 dollar bills and British 1 pound notes. All are known except for #7. The First lines in English are: 1- The American dollar has always been a currency of high value... 2- There is no way of compensating the people... 3- Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States... 4- His Excellency Ascalesi, Archbishop of Naples... 5- The Anglo-American bombers... 6- The American banks overflow with the gold of European countries... 7- Unknown 8- The Anglo-American "civilization" has devised a new means for bringing death... I also mentioned that there were three different propaganda messages found on German parodies of British 1 pound notes. They are: 11-line message: To our brother, the Moslem... 9-line message: Muslims of North Africa... 11-line message: Signs of Decline... There are also 3 different Arabic messages on German-made US $10 Federal Reserve notes. Although not currency, the March-April German Postal Specialist (just received) has my article on OSS parodies of the Hitler birthday souvenir sheet. Some of our readers may find it interesting. Herb Dear Esteemed Editor, You recently published an item written by me that described the MPCGram having the incorrect first day for the ANA Convention in NYC, but no action was taken to correct it. From what I have heard, you have not had much to do over the past week or so, so lets get cracking on fixing this error. July 30 is PNG Day and July 31 is the first day of the ANA Convention. An invitation is required to enter the bourse on PNG Day and it is open to the public on July 31. Howard A. Daniel III, MSG US Army Retired (and on the recall to active duty list) Dear Sarg, Sadam is no doubt quaking and UBL too! Thanks again for the fixes. Please check to see if we have it right now. Editor Dear Editor, I remember IGMR from the days of my youth..... Had the pleasure of about 6 weeks in summer camp there in 1970. There were no camp chits or MPC in use, all purchases were paid in cash at the px, etc. Prevalent species was the hungry horsefly, and since there were no horses in situ, soldiers were the meat of choice...IGMR in July, haven't spent time on this memory for years. webfootbob ================================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS ================================================ 2002 ANA Seminar: 29 June to 5 July W.W.
