From: "MPCgram" To: Cc: Subject: MPCGram 665 Date: Sunday, July 07, 2002 9:28 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 665-Sunday 7 July 2002 Rockholt--NASCA MPC Auction by Fred Schwan One of the concurrent activities at the ANA summer seminar is the library book sale. This is my third session, but this morning was my first visit to the sale--a mistake. It was wonderful. I am not the first to figure this out. A line starts at 6am or earlier for a 9am opening. The ANA library puts duplicate, obsolete, or otherwise unneeded copies of books and auction catalogs out for sale. I think that these items are probably supplemented by donations and possibly special purchases as well. I may not ever be willing to get into a three hour line early in the morning, but neither can I ever imagine missing another sale. Within a few moments at the sale I found a copy of the September 12, 1981 NASCA sale of the Rocky Rockholt collection of fractional currency. NASCA later became R. M. Smythe. The catalog is small, very small by any standard--something like 36 pages. Two MPC are illustrated on the cover and the first 24 lots are devoted to MPC: Series 692 $20 replacement and Series 641 $10 specimen! I have been thinking about this sale recently, because I remembered the sale with the specimen set. I did not remember the details and although I owned at least one copy of it, I could not find it. Heck, I knew that I would not be able to find it, so I did not even look for it. Now I have another copy that I can find (for at least a few days). The obvious reason that this sale is important is that it had the 641 specimen set and a similar set was auctioned by CAA in the past month. However, there is much more MPC in the sale too. It was a good find. The details stated with the 641 set do not match my own recollections, but neither are they exactly contradictory. Another interesting lot is number 2024 which is a "complete" 91 piece type set of MPC. Yes, 91 types in one lot. Both the 91 piece set and the specimen set were estimated at about $1500! My how times do change! The sale also included quite a few replacements, but only one is illustrated (the aforementioned 692 $20) and one other has a serial number given (461 $10). For the notes illustrated or serial number listed, I have entered the serial numbers in the MPC data base at papermoneyworld.net so that we might be able to locate where the notes are now. If you have not finished entering your notes, it is about time. The list now has over 4000 serial numbers. I hope that we can get that number over 10,000 by the end of the year. I certainly consider the Rockholt/NASCA catalog an important one and will include it in the list of MPC literature in the next MPC book. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Save early, save often. Never forget this computer truth. I was just shafted by the computer gods. Complacency had set in from weeks of reliable service. The feature story above was first written (and lost) this morning. Only after a few hours to get over the anger was I willing to do it over. Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL =============================================== Dear Gram, The other day I mentioned that I had data on the items Not that it is directly collecting military paper money, I have arrived at this week's summer seminar, and am taking a class called Numismatic Research. Unfortunately, Gail Baker, the "General" of the summer seminar, has shacked me up with three weird guys, named Boling, Schwan, and Shafer. So, I'm sure I'll have something MPC related to talk about after the class finishes in the day. Next year, I thought about taking one of those classes that deals with shiny round metallic objects, but if the advanced class gets the go-ahead, I'll be there instead. Cheers, Mark Dear Mark, Bright and shinny things? Yikes! Gail, save us. Editor Dear Gram, I agree with Mike Cummings earlier comment regarding Mickey Mouse money. Any other Gramsters agree with us? Ken Berger Dear Ken, Thank you for your comments. We do indeed look forward to other comments. Editor Dear Editor, I am looking for serial and position number, location of UV overprint on any MFC series 022. This was issued at MPCFEST III. If you do not have a UV light, send me the notes for my inspection and 24 hour turnaround. If you are interested, I have this type information on MFC series 011 in an excel file. I am assembling the same file on MFC series 022. David E.
