We will obviously have to do a better job on this area in the next edition of WWII remembered. This brings up a find that I have not reported in the gram. Some time ago I purchased a piece of SB1605 (page 728) on darkly toned paper. I figured the poor paper was a result of late-in-the-war production, but decided to check the piece against the one I already had, to see if there were any changes in the later printing. I soon found that there are some differences in the Chinese text on the back, and then noticed the clincher; the date on the cruddy looking piece is 1942, whereas the date on the listed piece is 1936. It made me feel sort of dumb! The 1942-dated piece will be listed as SB1606 next time out. I have long been leery of our selection of the identifying diagnostic on the one-peso Philippine US Army counterfeit (SB2224bq), because that denomination seems to be more common in junk boxes than the others. Several years ago I found a group of three Army counterfeits in a junk box, all with the same distinctive folds. That told me that a soldier or sailor who originally worked on production or distribution of the pieces had set them aside as a group, and they had stayed together until I found them. They were the 50 centavos and five and ten peso notes, and all contained the diagnostics we have described in SB (pages 624-625). I asked the dealer whether there had been a one-peso note in the group; he did not remember. At the Colorado Springs coin show this past weekend, I found a one peso and a five peso note, each with the diagnostic we have identified; they have similar wear patterns and appear to have traveled together for a long time. I consider this to be empirical evidence similar to the group of three pieces already mentioned; I am now confident that the one peso Army counterfeit has been properly identified. Enough for tonight; I have to get some sleep and finish preparing for a six-hour mini-seminar that I will be teaching for two evenings in the ANA summer seminar program: collecting counterfeit world paper money. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Last week Joe and I visited a coin shop not too far from here (Colorado Springs). I bought 50 (yes fifty) wonderful black and white photographs for use in the next edition of the WWII book. That is the good news. When I walked into the shop, I picked up a photograph on the counter. It was marked $4. I set it aside with that look "I will take it." The owner of the shop said "that one is not for sale." I spent the next three hours going through thousands of photographs from which I picked out the above mentioned fifty. During that time I made repeated comments about the first one that I had picked and which was not for sale. Many of the photos were in albums that had been made by WWII servicemen. One of these had two shots of soldiers playing poker (or possibly old maid or crazy eights). Anyway, we studied those photos real hard for any signs of money but could only find chips. Finally, I paid for the fifty and some other things that I had found (some really good things including two notes for my AMC collection), but the fellow still would not sell me the photo. So I made the following offer. I gave him a $100 deposit on the photo for the right to take it to the ANA headquarters so that I could scan it for use in the future book. THAT he liked and suggested that it would be ok with him if I did not return it. Today I returned it and got my money back (after scanning of course). What got me so excited? Actually, the photo was a strip of three black and whites. The first two photos were of balloons. Possibly weather balloons. Nice, but not a big deal. The third photo has a similar balloon, but also has three German soldiers. It is clearly a staged photo, but very interesting. The one fellow is holding a propaganda leaflet which is obviously part of the payload for this mission. The balloon was to be used to distribute propaganda leaflets! Unfortunately, the leaflet is not a currency based leaflet, but it is still a leaflet and demonstrates better than any item I have ever seen how balloons were used to distribute leaflets. Obviously, I think that it is a great photograph. We will certainly use it in WWII Remembered, but possibly I will figure out a way to use it here in the Gram before that. Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL =============================================== Editor, WOW! Your second copy of Rockholt sale? MPC LITERATURE?????? HUMMMMMMMMMM. MPC-WEST Dear Gram, I am very thankful to be back on your list. I'm not a "want my MPC Gram" or even an "I want my MPC." But I did have a handle on MPC when I was a Class A Agent in RVN, and wish then that I knew what I know now. I keep looking here and there (mostly there) for the few shops that have MPC in the 25 cent bin. Have picked up several replacement notes there (Yea, laugh, laugh). But it's all worth the look, and, sometime soon, I may place my dupes on eBay (after offering them to the Gram, of course.) I wish I had done then what I should have done -- set aside 10 or more of each new note. I didn't, so I'm stuck with one of each from 70-71. I wasn't a C-Day Officer, but was a Class A Officer more than once. Never found any replacements, because, in my civilian life, I had learned to riffle thru the packs. Never found an out of order note. Thanks again for my (renewed) subscription, and please give my best to all your staff (including one who almost won't admit he made a sale to me.) gregm burke Dear Greg, Your story is like so many others. We would love to have you come to the Fest to share them (you will have a great time). Fred Dear Gram, Please put me on the list for Fest IV.
