Melnick. Being a military paper money collector, you are interested in the 49 lots of MPC in the session. However, as there are still about 200 lots prior to the MPC, you recheck your bids and make last minute changes. Finally, lot 1260 is called, the one prior to the MPC session, and you prepare to battle. First up is a Series 461 short set, nickel through $1, all Choice Unc. As you already have that set, you casually note it goes for $105 with 5% juice added for the auctioneer's efforts. The auctioneer calls off a few more lots before he finally gets to lot 1267, a series 471 $5 note in VF, serial number B03401696B. You have set a limit of $450, and come out as the underbidder as the lot goes for $475. You pass on the next lot, a Series 471 $10 note in AU, serial number B06973636B, and watch it go for $300. After waiting a couple of minutes, the auctioneer reaches lot 1280, a pair of 10 cent replacements, Series 541 in F, and Series 611 in Gem. You hold up your paddle and nail down the lot at $30. You then try for the next lot, a Series 541 $5 note in Gem, serial number F00688512Fand again are the underbidder at $1000 with the note being hammered down at $1050. However, once again you are victorious on lot 1283, a Series 541 $10 replacement, serial number F21065241, in F for $105. At that point, you sit back, as starting with the Series 591 notes, your collection is complete. You note with interest that the Series 591 $5 note, lot 1288, serial number G00243956G, in Gem goes for $1650, and gets the highest bid for any MPC lot. Overall, lot 1295A, a set of six Gem Turnkey Commissary Receipts from 5 cents to $10 has the highest bid in the group going for $2900. However, you do pick up one more lot, lot 1305, a Series 681 $20 replacement, serial number C00142587, for $20. Not bad paying face value for a replacement note. Now to head to the cashier and collect your winnings. Note: The above auction lots and subsequent values are taken from the Prices Realized List for the auction. However, as I had a previous auction catalog from Melnick in late 1982 with some of the same lots, I do not know if actual sales took places at those prices or not. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== I have to tantalize you a little today. I drove to Colorado Springs. On the way here from Ohio, I was driving through Atlanta. It just so happens that I was talking to Harold Kroll on the cell phone when I passed a structure which was unmistakably a WWII era guard tower! I turned around and went back. The sign at the bottom of the tower said "WWII POW guard tower, more exhibits inside the museum"! I dug out some references that I carry with me at all times and read the basic information on the Atlanta camp. Wow. The museum was closed. I am going there tomorrow (Thursday) and hope to find lots more information on the Atlanta POW camp. You can count on reading it here. Oh, sorry, Atlanta, Nebraska.
