From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 669 Date: Thursday, July 11, 2002 7:14 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 669-Thurski 11 July 2002 First Woman Collector Registers for Fest Nancy Wilson has confirmed that she will attend MPCFest IV. Nancy has been a collector for many decades and is known to many Gramsters and Festers. By the way, Nancy's husband and American Numismatic Association president, John will also attend. More Allied Use of MPC by Larry "Ski" Smulczenski My copy of the July issue of the Retired Officers Magazine arrived last week and as sat eating lunch one day, I scanned the various articles and advertisements. One article in particular caught my attention and was put aside for more detailed reading. It was on the Korean War and was entitled Wing and a Prayer. It started off, "Fifty years ago, in the midst of the Korean War, the 18th Fighter Bomber Wing made a historic transition from the prop driven P-51 Mustang to this jet-powered F-86F-30 Sabre". The "Fighter Bomber" and the "F-86F-30" caught my eye. The F-86 was used extensively in the Korean War, but mainly as a fighter interceptor not as a fighter bomber. I went on to read "Based at Clark AB in the Philippines since the end of World War II, the 18th FBW was among the first Air Force units committed to the Korean War in July 1950, For a brief period, the wing operated with four full squadrons (later reduced to three), enabling it's pilots to log more than 50,000 successful combat sorties in the Mustang." "The decision to bring the new "dash-30" Sabres into Korea was made in the early fall of 1952 (that is late in the war--Armistice signed late June of 1953), and the delivery schedule was slated to begin in November. But construction at Osan AB fell behind schedule, and the new Sabres were delayed. Despite these difficulties, the wing moved to Osan by Dec. 31, while Mustang operations wound down at prior bases of operation, Chinhae and Hoengsong." "A mobile training detachment arrived at Osan Dec 29, and the switch over to the Sabre began Jan 7, 1953. Three squadrons, the 12th, the 67th and the 2nd South African Air Force (SAAF) made up the 18th FBW." BINGO--I thought. Here is a fighter squadron from an allied nation attached to an American Fighter-Bomber Wing. I had to go scurrying back to my old grams to find the one that I remembered Fred writing about foreign armed forces serving in Korea. I found it in Gram 608 and there I found that South Africa had 811 troops serving in Korea from Nov 16, 1950 to Oct 31, 1953. I went to Google.com and found that there was a web site that confirmed that the 2nd South African Air Force started to transition to F-86's in Jan 1953 as part of the 18th Fighter Bomber Wing and flew their first combat sorties on 11 March 1953. So this all agreed with the magazine article I was reading. In his article, Fred asked the question, "--did other forces use MPC in Korea during the war?" Well, this doesn't come out and say so conclusively, but I would bet my St. Louis Cardinal baseball cap that since these men were part of the same parent unit, slept in adjoining barracks, ate in the same chow hall, were briefed by the same support organizations and got their butts shot-off flying the same missions, they sure as hell had similar BX/PX privileges. You could make the argument that South Africa was still part of the British Empire at that time, and could have been paid in BAFSV. I grant you that, but I doubt that our BX/PX's would have accepted BAFSV's and I further doubt that there were any NAAFI facilities at these airfields for 800 troops. NAAFI may have been at sites were there was a large concentration of British troops, but I have not yet found anything that says there was contingent of British troops at Osan. I think that we somehow made arrangements for these troops to get and use MPC. OK, so now the task is to find some South African that was in the 2nd SAAF in Korea and has a piece of 472 or 481 scrip that was issued to him. Wouldn't that make a great story. DID YOU KNOW--My handy-dandy World War II desk calendar says that on this date in 1942, South American countries report that German agents are flooding their markets with counterfeit U.S. currency in an attempt to devalue the dollar. We have all heard about Operation Bernhard and the British counterfeits produced by the Germans, and that they were working on U.S. notes. But this is July 11, 1942. That is much too early for Bernhard. I have not personally heard of any U.S. counterfeits attributed to that time frame. Any thoughts? ============================================== Editorial ============================================== As you read this, I am probably on the road to Atlanta (as discussed yesterday). I expect to have a report on that trip on Saturday or Sunday. Mark Watson and I have both commented on the ANA Library book sale over the past week. Possibly Joe talked about it too. When I bought the NASCA-Rockholt MPC sale, the catalogs were $2 each. Mark bought his when the price was reduced to $1. Today, on the last day of the seminar, the prices are reduced again. Are you ready? Catalogs are $5 for all that you can carry! I have been looking for motivation to start working out--I have found it! Watch out next year! Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL =============================================== Dear Gram, It was refreshing to read Frank Carter's comments about the scholarship fund. There are a lot of people involved in this program that you never hear about and comments like this are a reward for their participation. The annual MPC Fest auction did real well this year to raise funds for the scholarship fund and this is due to the many folks who donated the items along with cash donations. Its not the size of the donation, its the thought behind it. I for one had the good fortune of attending the first seminar with a scholarship and it will always be a week I'll remember. Many new friends were made that I never would have met and the education was fantastic. Attending this class or any other that the ANA puts on is well worth the trip with or without a scholarship. Get behind and support the MPC Scholarship Fund, it will make you feel good.
