From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 670 Date: Friday, July 12, 2002 9:29 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 670-Friday 12 July 2002 Shopping at Coins of the Realm By Howard A. Daniel III This week and last week, I have been living out of a hotel room in Rockville, Maryland. My wife is now working in the U.S. for awhile instead of Tokyo, so I am with her during the week near her office and back at our Bay House on the weekends and holidays. After she finds an apartment near her favorite mall (Tyson's Corner), I will spend more time back at the Bay House. One of my favorite numismatic and philatelic stores in the DC area is Coins of the Realm. It is owned by Pete Boyer and he has a great staff working for him. Pete is into "world" paper and he does have some military stuff in his better-priced stock, so you need to contact him for the "good" stuff! Since "military" is not a priority for me, I went through his "junk" boxes. Yes, there are some of us who are not completely addicted! Last week, I went through his $1 box of paper and paid him $38 for 55 pieces of "military" paper. Nothing rare or scarce and it was mostly AMC, but there were a few MPCs in the purchase. This week, I went through his 3 for a $1 box of paper and found a bunch of CU JIM notes, and one BU 1 Peso Philippine JIM with the interesting serial of "0242224." I also found two more AMC Italian pieces. There was a total of 38 pieces in this purchase for $12. John Jefferson is in charge of world coins. In the past, I have bought MANY military club tokens from him and expect more in the future. This time, he had a Thai telephone token for me. His son, Jay, is in charge of U.S. coins, and he had a chopmarked Trade Dollar for me to consider. I bought it after seeing what might be a Thai and/or Lao chop on it. Dirk is in charge of philatelics and I have found some military pieces in his stock that could be of interest to several Gramsters. When you are in the DC area, please consider visiting Pete's store at 1331-F Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852. His telephone number is 301-340-1640 and his email is "CoinRealm@Erols.com." Pete is not too good about monitoring his email, so you might want to just call him and tell him to read your email with your wants and needs. Good Hunting!! ============================================== Editorial ============================================== I had a great day yesterday in Atlanta. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you about it now because I am still on the road. I found this terminal in a truck stop so I decided to send out this Gram without the Atlanta report. I will give you a clue though. The Atlanta Camp DID issue chits! ============================================== MAIL CALL =============================================== Dear Esteemed Editor, I can see you still need assistance concerning the ANA in NYC. The ANA Message Center telephone number is 719-499-3591. If you are not there, I will be manning the NI/IBNS club table and it can be the Gramsters Meeting Place. The IBNS General Meeting is at 11AM on Saturday morning and it is followed by the NI General Meeting at 12 Noon in the same room. I will be moderating both meetings and will be running a "show and tell" with the attendees. Bring your stuff to NYC and show it off! Every night in my hotel room, I will process my emails, so you can send emails to me too, if you have something to be done at the convention. Howard A. Daniel III (Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com) Howard A. Daniel III If you tried to send an email to us last week, our server was being switched to a new carrier. I only received a few messages, so unless you got a reply, please resend. Sorry for any mix-ups, as we were out of town, and did not receive the intended message to the change. We have updated our web site at www.Butternut.org. It has some new items and a two new Butternut Bite articles. This weekend I will be setup at the 49th Eastern State Numismatic Associations annual show held at Brandywine Terrace, 3416 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, Delaware (next to Wilmington). It is always a great show, run by great people. Hours are Friday 1-6pm, Saturday 10-6pm and Sunday 10-3pm. Hope to see you there.
