Daniel III One of my best sources of references and videos is a catalog I receive in the mail with "The Scholars BookShelf" on it. Here are some items in their most recent catalog that might be of interest to you; "Nazi POWs in America". Visits the little-known, top secret facilities throughout the United States where the flood of German POWs was interned. Interviews with former guards and prisoners shed light on conditions, security, violence and other aspects of their experience, among them the paintings and carvings created by some of the inmates. 50 minutes. Price $24.95. It is possible that some scrip/chits/tokens might be shown in this video and other excellent information. "The East Came West; Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist Volunteers in the German Armed Forces, 1941-1945" by Antonio J. Munoz, Editor. An account of nearly two million volunteers, primarily Soviet citizens of all kinds, who joined German armies and fought for the Reich. The book studies the reasons why many if these, who were considered racially inferior by the Germans, fought with them. 2001, 332 pages, 8 1/2 x 11", illustrated in color and black and white. Price $50.00. It is possible there might be something in it about the Japanese-sponsored Indian Army that several researchers need. "Stalin's Silver; The Sinking of the SS John Barry and the Hunt for Buried Treasure" by John Beasant. The story of the August, 1944 sinking of this American merchant ship in the Arabian Sea while carrying nearly $400 million worth of silver and of the subsequent search for the wreck by the French International Maritime Institute and Jean Roux. 1995. 216 pages. (St. Martin's) List price $24.95 Sale Price $8.95. It is possible that something of a collectible nature might be explained in this book and other excellent information. "V For Victory Collectibles" by Martin S. Jacobs. Hundreds of color and black and white illustrations depict the toy banks, music, v-mail, post cards, stamps and bonds, banners, greeting cards, books jewelry, toys and other memorabilia from WWI, each accompanied by estimated values for collectors. 2002, 104 pages, 8 1/2 x 11". Softcover (Pictorial Histories). Paperback price $14.95. It is possible that some scrip/chits/tokens might be explained in this book and other excellent information. "Forgotten Fields of America, World War II Bases and Training, Then and Now" by Lou Thole. Profiles such fields as Coffeyfield, Lockbourne, Fairmont, Herington, Freeman, Stout Field, and Hendricks, Freeman Field, Moton Field, Carlstrom Field, Hondo Army Air Field, Pyote Army Air Field, Sioux Army Air Base, and others. Each fully illustrated profile documents the buildup of the U.S. Army Air Force just prior to World War II and the status of these bases today. 1997-1999, 168 + 172 pages, 8 1/2 x 11", Softcover, (Pictorial Histories), List Price per set of 2 volumes $29.90. Sale Price $26.90. It is possible that some scrip/chits might be explained in this book and other excellent information. "One Woman's World War II" by Violet A. Kockendoerfer. The memoir of a WAAC who served as director of military service clubs in Britain, France and Germany, witnessing the V-2 attacks in London, the final surrender of the main German Army, the liberation of a concentration camp, and events in Bavaria as Germans there struggled to recover. 1994, 211 pages, illustrated (Kentucky), List Price $25.00. Sale Price $7.95. It is possible that some scrip/chits might be explained in this book and other excellent information. Go to "www.scholarsbookshelf.com/military/" to order this book for your library. Good luck in acquiring what you need, and please write about it in the Gram and/or other numismatic publications. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== I should have said something about Ski's column on South African forces using MPC in Korea. I think that he is right on that this is an important conclusion. I also think that there are more such discoveries to be made! In Gram 661, Harold made a nice contribution on Series 661 that I also forgot to praise! He had a nice combination of research and human interest. The next series contribution is only ten Grams away. In this case I must apologize in advance because Mark Watcon game me a draft to review while at the seminar, but I forgot to do it. Mark, if you want me to do it now, please send it via eamil. I am home now. The ride home was longer than the ride to Colorado Springs! I will put off for one more day a report on the Atlanta POW camp because I am still wasted! Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL =============================================== Dear Editor, I have been thinking about the criticism of Fest money as "Mickey Mouse Money." I like it (the criticism). After all, when MPC was in use, the users called it micky mouse money and certainly would never have considered collecting it. One of the purposes of Fest money is to recreate the MPC system. Sounds like it is working. I will write more about this idea later.
