From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 673 Date: Tuesday, July 16, 2002 7:51 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 673-Tuesday 16 July 2002 Emergency counterfeits by Joe Boling I've had a note for a while to write a column about counterfeit shoshi. What I had in mind was the revalidation stamps that the Japanese placed on old notes in 1946 so that they could be recirculated, there being insufficient quantities of new notes on hand to complete the currency reform, even with most of the converted notes going into blocked bank accounts and not being exchanged. I bought a 100 yen note with a counterfeit shoshi from Bill Henderson sometime back in the 1970s. See SB page 322 for a discussion of this issue and an illustration of the note I am talking about. The proper shoshi are printed from intaglio plates; the fake is lithographed in a gray-green color that isn't correct (too dull). It is glued to the upper corner of an example of the last 100-yen note produced before the occupation, the lithographed note cataloged as SB165b under Japan (page 535). There must have been a problem with fake shoshi at the time, because the Japanese authorities had rubber stamps in the appropriate sizes to mark the notes found with bad shoshi on them. Barely visible in the illustration on page 322 are three small rectangular stamps over the shoshi that say "counterfeit" in Japanese. Two very large stamps that say "invalid" are placed on the note itself; they mean that without a proper shoshi, the note no longer has monetary value. In the past year I have obtained two more examples of counterfeit revalidation stamps on notes of the occupation period. One is from China and the other from Germany. Check the Red Army issues for China on page 378. I have what appears to be a counterfeit of the 100 yuan revalidation stamp cataloged at SB376 and illustrated above the listings. The originals are a bright green with a hint of yellow; the fake is a dull green color. Both are lithographed, but the fake is a visibly lower quality image. However, without a genuine example sitting beside it, the image quality is not so low as to attract attention. Both have a complex chained underprint (different from each other). The genuine stamp's is lime green, but very faint; the other is yellow, and a bit easier to see. The genuine stamp has very sparse, and very small, blue silk threads (I see only three in the example at hand; a ten yuan stamp applied to a Manchukuo 10 yuan note, SB375b, appears to be on the same paper); the fake has no silk. The third example is from East Germany at the time of the 1948 currency reform, when the east German government had to quickly revalidate reichsmarks (SB61-669, page 302) because they had no currency parallel to the Allied issues for the west (SB651-660). The stamps they used are lithographed, but also embossed, so that they have a textured feel. In addition, there is a chained underprint in a different shade. I have three pieces. One is obviously counterfeit, lacking the underprint, with very crude printing, crude perforations (11 1/2), and apparently water soluble ink, as there is a large smudge in the middle that seems to have been wet. Of the other two, one has noticeably lower relief in the embossing, and is somewhat inferior print quality, but both have the same underprint and perforations (13 1/2). In comparing these with other stamps in Fred's collection while at ANA, we noticed that all the other ones he has show elements of the main lathework design inside the openings of the numerals "948," whereas none of the 50 mark ones that I have do (he had no 50-mark pieces except the counterfeit already described, which is now mine). Does anyone out there have a 50 mark stamp that shows lathework in those openings? ============================================== Editorial ============================================== R. M. Smythe Company is having an auction in NY City on July 29 just before the ANA convention in that city. This is a tried and true timing thing. The catalog arrived within the last few days. There is not a lot of material in the auction of direct interest to Gramsters, but there is always something. There is no rare MPC but there is a nice group of Hawaii notes and another of world notes. Of course there are some WWII notes in that section. I guess that I need to make a confession. During the second week of the ANA Summer Seminar I took Peter Huntoon's class on national bank notes. It was great. The Smythe catalog has a very nice selection of these so I had a nice time looking at these notes. I will probably attend the auction and look at all of them! Lots of interesting things are happening here at HQ, but I am having a bit of trouble commenting on any of them at the moment. Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL =============================================== Dear Gram, I try to purchase the Sunday edition of "The Washington Post" newspaper for its excellent crossword puzzle and, of course, the news. Down here at my place on the Chesapeake Bay, we have a weekly paper with no international news, and I am still interested in knowing what is going on around the world. On page A23 in the July 14 issue is an article with the title, "For Relatives of WWII Dead, Truth Emerges >From Archines" by Karl Peter Kirk of the Associated Press. Karl writes from Budapest that there is an Institute of Military History where a Lt. Col. Janos Bus is assisting Hungarians in researching their relatives who were killed or missing in World War II. I thought it might have a web site and other information of interest to Gramsters, so I went to my favorite search engine and looked for it. It was the first item in my first search! The web site address is http://www.militaria.hu. There is an English version of the site and many categories of information. One of them is Military Prison Camps, so besides regular military currencies that might be there, there might also be prison camp monies too. There is an email address at the site too for you to ask questions, so you guys who are interested in Hungarian military, go to it. Good luck and good hunting.
