From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 677 Date: Saturday, July 20, 2002 11:57 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 677-Saturday 20 July 2002 2002 ANA Military Numismatics Seminar by David Seelye I was a winner of a scholarship to the 2002 edition of the ANA Summer seminar Military Numismatics since 1930. The co-teachers of the course were Joe Boling and Fred Schwan, also co-authors of " World War 2 Remembered" There were 11 students in the class, including a Young Numismatist on a YN scholarship. There were two required texts for the course. The two "Bibles" on the subject matter; "World War 2 Remembered," and "The Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates" 4th edition. To start the session of we were paid in series 100 AFC denominated in yen. That is Allied Fest Certificate. This was nicknamed "C" Yen, helped by the "C" in the design. This is in the “tradition” of the much better known A and B yen. It is doubtful that this series of C yen was left over from World War II, but it does bring up the question of D yen. [see illustrations at: www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/anamoney.htm] However prior to the issuing of the "C" yen, the only valid currency at the seminar by posted proclamation, training was needed. Warner Talso functioned as the pay officer, while I was the trainee. I reported to the desk in class and was issued 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 yen yellow training notes, after presenting my dog tag id (purchased at MPCFEST III) and my pay book. The training complete, we went into the hall where Warner and Max (the YN) issued our pay envelopes containing 336 yen. On the board in the classroom there was a posting of the conversion factor from US$ to yen US$1.00= ¥2.8. Anyone needing to convert additional greenbacks to yen needed to meet with the pay officer, a Major Major. This was not an easy task, as the hours favored by Major Major did not correlate with anything except to make it impossible do a conversion. Furthermore, the hours were normally posted after the time had passed! The pay ¥336 was based on the fact that for the majority of the class, this was the first MPCFEST sponsored event. It was apparent the pay officer Major Major did not consider that for Warner, Joe Boling, Fred and I were MPCFEST vets, and as such were entitled to additional pay. Speaking for myself, it took the balance of the day, and a bit of creative accounting to finally get my pay situation worked out to the mutual satisfaction of the book seller and me. The two required books were sold by the "exchange" at ¥150. The "C" yen had the following denominations; 200, 20, 10, 5, 2, 1. Now when the "C" yen was issued I immediately began a quest for serial number C00000001C and C00000001*, C00000002C and C00000002*, and any C0000039C. I rapidly consummated a trade for a 200 yen C00000001*, and several others on my want list. Max noticed that his 200 yen had 100 yen on the back of the note, not 200 yen!! He found a double denomination!!! After a consult, Max traded the note to me for my collection (more on this later) for 150 yen, for the required two books, and US$100.00. By now, I presume that the reader has figured out my problem. We were only issued Y336 and I need at least 3 200 yen notes. I need the 1* which I had, I needed the 1C, and I needed a note to show the back of the note. Trades were made, where I received "C" yen in exchange for MPC off my fixed price list #15 (I brought 15 copies to the class).Bob Kurcher showed me the 200 yen that he received in his pay. It was C00000002*. Now I wanted that note for Harold Kroll. As most of you know he collects MFC serial number 2. We were watching TV after breakfast, waiting for the room to be opened by Joe B. (he always beat Fred to the room). I asked what he wanted for the note. He replied that he wanted to keep it, as it was an error. I sat upright in the chair while he showed me what he found. The notes have 200 in numbers on the face of the note. In the corner, the note he had did not have 200 but 20!!! I quickly checked my 200 yen C00000001* and sure enough. It had the same error. The rest of the 200 yen did not have the error, only the replacements!!! I showed Fred in the seminar room before class started and he was astounded. The seminar had started with Fred covering the MPC section Sunday and Monday. Joe Boling took over and covered the Japanese homeland and Chinese occupation issues, along with the Japanese bonds used to finance the war. Fred followed up with the German and German occupation issues, along with the French and colonies issues. All of the discussion was accompanied by the passing around of the various notes the speakers were talking about. For me the seeing and handling the Fred's replacement collection was the summit of supreme pleasure. A close second was his collection of Thailand and Korean MPC. His collections in these two areas are a sight to behold. Joe's collection of Japanese war bonds is also the best in the world. And it's a wonderful thing to see the pieces and have the knowledgeable speakers to give you the interesting tidbits that fill out the information that's not in a book. One evening after class, Warner, Frank Clark, Fred and I went to the cafeteria for a coffee and talk. Fred excused himself for a bit and went over to a small table, hunched over something and appeared to be sorting. He came back to the table and showed a group of twelve AFC Specimen notes!! There were six 1 yen notes, 5 with blue Specimen and 1 with red specimen overprint with serial number C00000000C; two 10 yen with the blue Specimen; three 20 yen with blue Specimen; and one 200 yen with blue Specimen. The 200 yen note brought me up in my chair as it was an expedient Specimen on a note with a serial number. The number is C00000001C!!! The note I need for my set!! Fred charged Warner and me to come up with a plan to distribute the notes in a random way during tomorrow's class. My additional task was to safeguard the notes over night. The notes were placed in individual safety envelopes by Warner. They were then shuffled and the students allowed to pick, with Warner taking the last envelope. I received a 1 yen blue specimen. The expedient specimen eventually found it's way home. As the days progressed, Max remarked to me about the changing rate of the US$ to yen. The posted rate started at 2.8 yen per dollar, and by Wednesday it was at 6 yen per dollar. I had noticed the rate change, but since Major Major was never around to convert dollars to yen had not made the connection Max made. Max asked if there was going to be a conversion due to the apparent inflation!!! I asked Max to repeat his question to Fred. Wednesday afternoon, about 3:30PM , it was announced that due to inflation there would be a conversion. The appropriate form was passed out to the class. The form, along with all the AFC yen for conversion were turned in to the officer in charge, Fred. You were given a receipt for the yen turned in, but no new scrip!!! A number of the class protested as they would have no funds for the last night in Colorado Springs. To no avail. Max was not at class for most of the afternoon, as the YN's had a YN sponsored trip to a Colorado Rockies baseball game. He would be able to do a late conversion on Thursday morning. On Thursday morning we received our new scrip. We were issued MFC series 022, still current in all other areas that accept MFC, with a red ANA overprint. Again a new white proclamation was posted over the top of the old yellow AFC proclamation. The new one stated that only ANA overprint series 022 was valid in this area. About this time Warner passed out to the class some yellow scrap paper, that happened to be training notes. The rate used to convert our AFC yen to series 022 MFC was 5 yen per dollar. This was an unexpected bonus, as the official rate before conversion was 6 yen per dollar. With the limited amount of ANA overprint, plus the fact that it was already in use, meant that there were no serial number 1's available. But I did manage to acquire a set of notes of each denomination. I will accept any ANA overprint MFC series at a premium over face on any of my fixed price lists. At Thursday noon the class ended! It was interesting to note that an attendee, who had purchased a 3rd edition of the "The Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates" at the ANA library sale just prior to the start of class, and protested that he didn't need the new edition, made a trade with me to acquire the 2nd edition. I helped to pack up the classroom and "neaten" up a bit. I liberated the proclamations, as I collect/ accumulate MFC and related ephemera. I was quite surprised to find that the back of the first proclamation on the yellow paper of the AFC training money had a partially printed sheet of training money. Apparently this was discarded as scrap, then was put into use on the clean side for the proclamation! As I said earlier I collect MFC. Specifically any serial number 1 and 1 replacement from any series, errors, and related ephemera. I also accept at par any current MFC on any items from my fixed price lists or at shows. In addition I maintain an Excel spread sheet on serial number and related information on MFC series 011, 022, and their ANA overprints, and AFC yen. I am always looking for serial number information. So MPCFEST IIIers please send me your serial and position number information. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Since the success of the linked photographs, I have been thinking about this. First, the experiment was not a complete success. One Gramster said that he could not make the links work. Afer that, I tried sending him some illustrations as attachments. That worked well for him which got me thinking that I can try sending illustrations as attachments. Therefore, I am sending one here as an attachment. To make things better (or more complicated) here is a link to the photos: www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/Atlanta.htm Now you have a choice of ways to look at them and also to comment about! We want to hear from you. The attached photo is of the guard tower at the museum for the Atlanta POW camp. As described a few days ago, this tower is a reproduction. I asked the people at the museum about it. The tower was recreated from photos that were available of the original towers. I was disaponted that they did not have original plans to work from. However, now I am wondering if they can provide the plans for the repro?! Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL =============================================== Fred, This gram has a question from Chief (USAF) Richard Ziegler asking where he can purchase the MPC Replica notes. I have classifieds for these 107 note sets in both Bank Note Reporter and Numismatic News at $25.00 per set.  If you deem it OK I'd like to offer these sets in the gram for any gramster for $20.00 per set.  In addition, for anyone who buys from me through the gram I will put 10% of the purchase into the scholarship fund. Thank you. Dick Freyser Dear Dick, Thank you for your generous offer. You ad appears below. Editor, Interesting. There were nearly 600 Germans kerplunk in the middle of the area of operation for the Manhatten Project... I wonder if they were still there at 0530 on 16 July 1945... I searched www.TopoZone.com for Fort Stanton, NM and found it located about 50 miles ESE of the Trinity Test site. It was called "Fort Stanton Hospital and Military Reservation" on the map. The 1:25,000 view of the map showed a very detailed location for the buildings there at the time of creation of the map.
