From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 678 Date: Sunday, July 21, 2002 9:25 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 678-Sunday July 2002 The United States Post Office in WWII, by Lawrence Sherman by Howard A. Daniel III The July 15 issue of "Linn's Stamp News" had an article with the title "New book is a bible for wartime collectors" in "The Artful Accumulator by Rob Haeseler. I imagine it would catch the attention of most Gramsters too, so I read the article. Mr. Sherman and others have been collecting thousands of covers from WWII and building a library of references to research the background of each one. This work has produced a 505 page book with tons of information that might be useful to many Gramsters too. The publisher is the Collectors Club of Chicago at 1029 North Dearborn Street, Chicago, IL 60610 and they are selling it for $49.50 postpaid until the 500 copies are sold out. They only accept checks as long as they are not sold out. Another source and review is at http://www.pbbooks.com/war.htm. It has many other books that might be of interest to you, but I think you must send a check and cannot do it all online. But there is also http://www.jameslee.com/beyond26.htm, where you can buy it with a credit card and do it all online. If one or more Gramsters do buy this book, please write a review here to see if others might find it useful to have it in their library. Please email me a copy of your review at "Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com" in case our esteemed MPC Gram editor has another computer problem. I am not sure if "Gold Star Mothers" is something for the Gram or not, but it was recently forwarded to me by a friend who is a veteran of the Korean War. It was not written by him, but by Cdr. Hamilton McWhorter USN Retired. But my "Two Books About the US Army Air Corps in WWII" item below it is. I received my Edward R. Hamilton "Bargain Books" price list the other day and placed in my "reading room" for future perusal. Out of the 32 pages of hundreds and hundreds of books, I found only one to order for myself, but I think I found a couple that might be at least of interest to Larry Smulczenski. The first book SKU is 1576410 and with the title: "In Enemy Hands: Personal Accounts of Those Taken Prisoner of War in World War II" by Claire Swedberg. It has 284 pages and was published by Stackpole for $24.95. The sale price is $7.95. The second book SKU is 1529641 and with the title: "The Wrong Side of the Fence: A United States Army Air Corps POW in World War II" by Eugene E. Halmost, Jr. It has 152 pages and was published by White Mane for $24.95. The sale price is also $7.95.You can write to Edward R. Hamilton, Bookseller, Falls Village, CT 06031-5000 and add only $3.50 postage to have one or both books shipped to you. Their website is at "www.EdwardRHamilton.com". They only take checks or money orders, so you cannot order it online. These guys do not want to get too far into the twenty-first century!! What I really like about the second book is "United States Army Air Corps" in the title. Doesn't it sound so much better than that modern "United States Air Force"? I can already hear Larry and the other "blue" guys out there typing a nasty email to me at "Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com".I hope someone finds something in one or both books about camp scrip, but it if not, it might be worthwhile contacting the authors through their publishers to see if they came across some information during their research and did not write about it. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== We received one important feedback on the attached scans in Gram 677. The issue of viruses and attachments were brought up. We will look into a new virus checker as a possible solution to this problem. Fred ============================================== MAIL CALL =============================================== Dear Gram, After reading the reports of the summer seminar, I am even more upset that I did not go. I will be there next year for sure! MPCKid (Kroll) Dear Gram, Just a quick note to let you know that we have table #E05 on the 6th floor at the upcoming ANA convention in New York City . The convention takes place Wednesday July 31st through Sunday August 4th at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in mid-town Manhattan. We will have a goodly portion of our stock of World and Ancient coins as well as tokens, medals, banknotes and related items. As usual our offerings of numismatics of the Holyland and the Jewish People from ancient to modern times will be especially strong. However we certainly can't take everything we have in our inventory. Please contact us by this Tuesday, July 23rd, if there is something specific you would like us to bring. If your plans are to go to NYC, we hope to see you there. Bill Rosenblum Dear Bill, I doubt if I need to mention it, but please take your concnetration camp notes and similar items to NY!
