From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 681 Date: Wednesday, July 24, 2002 6:34 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 681-Wed 24 July 2002 Hitting the bases on 11 August 1969, Series 681 represented a change in the design philosophy of MPC. Instead of having female vignettes, the series, for the most part, highlighted the various military services. Like the prior series, 681 had eight denominations, from a nickel to twenty dollars, only the twenty dollar note having a second printing. Looking at the fractionals, the face depicts the USS Thomas A. Edison returning to Holy Loch Scotland from its first patrol, sometime around May 1963. The BEP based the design on a photograph taken by Captain Young. These submarines had two crews with Captain Young being the skipper of the crew about to take the submarine. As fellow Gramster and Seminarian David Klinger has reported in depth on this subject, please refer back to recent Gram articles for more information. Switching to the back of the note, the design moves to outer space with an astronaut vignette. Even though you cannot see the astronaut's face, you can easily identify him as Maj Edward A. White, the first American astronaut to walk in space. To compare your note to the actual picture, I refer you to the NASA website at: http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/IMAGES/SMALL/GPN-2000-001408.jpg with a write up at: http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/ABSTRACTS/GPN-2000-001408.html Unfortunately, NASA has uploaded the picture upside down, so you will have to turn your monitors over (or stand on your head) to make the comparison to the note. Maj James A McDivitt, command pilot of the Gemini IV, took the picture on 3 June 1965 on its third orbit. Next design in the series is on the one dollar note. This is my all-time favorite note. In fact, this is also the only replacement note I have in my collection. On the face is a vignette of Joe Pilot. There are not many discernable features to date the photo other than the helmet which looks like the USAF P-4B (see http://www.lanset.com/aeolusaero/Articles/Helmets.htm for more information). This would date the picture, if one was used for the design, to the late 1950s. Going to the back, the Air Force theme continues with a vignette of the Thunderbirds. The aircraft depicted are the F-100C, part of the Super Sabre line of aircraft. The F-100 was the Air Force's first operational aircraft capable of flying faster than Mach 1, the speed of sound. The Thunderbirds replaced the F-84F in 1956 with this model, and flew them until 1964 when they in turn were replaced by the F-105B. Again, if a picture was used for the design, it can be dated to the early years of service of the F-100C as the Thunderbirds modified the paint scheme on the aircraft by adding the traditional Thunderbird motif to the belly before 1960. For more information on the aircraft, please look at: http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/research/fighter/f100c.htm http://cybermodeler.com/f-100/images/tbird_02.jpg http://hometown.aol.com/thudeur2/bitburg.htm Moving to the five dollar note, the design moves back to the Navy by depicting a signalman aboard a ship on the face. This design was initially targeted for the back of the fractional notes, with a medic tending to a small child being used on the face of the five dollar note. However, at some point, a switch was made, and the medic got dropped from the note. On the back of the note, the BEP retained a non-military design with an eagle encircled by an scroll design on top of two pillars. Going to the seventh note in the series, the Army finally appears. On the face, a Special Forces vignette appears composed of a sergeant holding a M14 rifle superimposed on a CH-21 Shawnee. Again, the BEP used a photo as the basis for the design, at least for the sergeant portion. On the back, a M48A4 tank in motion appears. On the final note of the series, the face of a simple GI graces the face. On the back, a B-52G in flight carrying AGM-28A Hound Dogs. Again, a photo was used for the design. As I'm a civilian with the Air Force, I enjoy the military designs on the notes. However, due to the number of photos used by the BEP for some of the designs, I can't help but think that there are photos for all of the images except for the 5 dollar eagle back. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Thanks to Mark for his article on Series 681. Darn, I had another article stockpiled about 681 and not only could not find it, but forgot who wrote it or any other details. If it was you, please help me out and send it again or at least write with some clues! Heck, anytime that a collection has more than twenty different, it is significant. This collection is not significant so much for how many different, but for what the pieces are. This collection includes some VERY important replacements, starting with the first one. Terms are available, please confirm availability via email fred@papermoneyworld.net. Of course the email confirmation gets the note. Series 471 50c, (SN B00488021/pos 62, plate note in MPC 4) very rare, four reported. This is the most difficult series. A great note. Listed as VG in the census, but it has claims to better. Indeed, except for some soiling on the back it clearly would be fine. It is important to look at the others in the census. They are VG, F, and F+ respectively. Furthermore, all three of those pieces are in major collections that are unlikely to come on the market for decades. This is an important chance: $3950 Series 521 5 cent, second printing (12 reported), great fine (SN E01088098/pos 53) $275.00 Series 521 25 cents (E00264390/34 first printing, 7 reported), VG with honest wear, all quarters are scarce to rare, $300. Series 591 5 cents (G00209786/27) F-VF $295.00. Series 591 $1 (G00256925/33) F $1750.00 Series 611 5 cents (H00089203/12) VG (condition rarity!) $75 Series 611 25 cents (H00058207//8) , only 11 of the type, rare F, attractive, $850 Series 611 $1 (H00017307/3) F-VF $150 Series 611 $10 this is a rare and important note. Furthermore, it has a good pedigree. It was in the famed DeRosa collection then in another private collection until now. In the census it is listed as fine. That is probably a reasonable description. Technically it is somewhat lower, but it looks better! It has three heavy vertical folds. The two flank folds have splits at the bottom. There is tape residue on the right side of the face (this is probably removable), but the portrait is unaffected and the note does not look bad. SN H00076907, are you ready for this? It is position number 10 thus matching the denomination! All in all a desirable note at only $995. Series 641 5 cents (first printing J00333038/42) VF, interesting SN $150 Series 641 50 cents (first printing J00534868/67) F-VF looks much better than fine $300 Series 641 $1 (first printing J00220517/28) VG with two staple holes but looks good $250 Series 661 $1 F $95.00 Series 681 5 cents VG-F $100 Series 681 $20 first printing wonderful VF $800 Series 692 5 cents EF+ $150 Series 692 10 cents AU $200 Former Kesselman Series 692 25 cents VF $285 Series 692 $10 EF, 2 pin holes $3300 WANTED SECTION: Collectors may submit lists of items wanted for their collections for listing here.
