The research included viewing some videos. I was watching Crusade in the Pacific, Volume 3, part 13, Speeding up the Attack - The Marshalls. In the aftermath of victory at Kwajalein, souvenirs were gathered up. One clip shows a US Marine holding what was stated to be Japanese money. He had a whole handful of what appeared to be 10 Yen notes. The design is very similar (I think identical) to that shown for US propaganda reprints of 1930 Japanese 10 Yen notes on page 536 of your WWII Remembered book. The notes appear to be in almost new condition because the Marine in fanning them out similar to a deck of cards. I couldn't make out any serial numbers. Questions for you: Did the US use propaganda notes in the Marshalls? Did the Japanese send their own money to places like Kwajalein? What are your thoughts on this? ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Shame on you! You did not study the list of MPC replacements that have been listed here in the Gram for the past few days. Yes, I know, you have looked hundreds of times and not found anything of interest, or no changes since the day before. Serious collectors check every day, every Gram, every price list, every auction.... I know about missed opportunities. Some of my best stories--the ones that I love to tell, but hate to remember--are about missed chances. I realized today that you have not been checking when a collector called to order an item from the list. He had an excited tone in his voice. He called as soon as he saw the item that he wanted, but was afraid that it might be sold (it is now). I could also hear the disappointment in his voice when he learned that the list had appeared for a few days before he looked. He knew that he had flirted with disaster! Cheated death so to speak. I knew at that moment that I needed to address this issue here. Yes, we have been negligent in not adequately "pushing" the sales section of the Gram. We will work on that from headquarters here, but you can help too. Send us some lists of things for sale! Such lists are good for the Gram. Do not be shy! ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gramsters, USS Wyoming was a WW1 era battleship converted to a training ship as per the Washington Naval treaty after WW1. Long gone by Korea and Vietnam. Only the 4 Iowa class battleships (Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri and Wisconsin) remained on the reserve list at the beginning of the US phase of the Vietnam war. Only Iowa and New Jersey were activated at that time. All four were later re-fitted in the early 80's with cruise missiles, Phalanx (?) AA guns etc. and I think all but Iowa saw action during the Gulf war. All are de-commissioned now and no battleships are active or in reserve anywhere in the world. Larry Gibbs Dear Gram, Over the weekend while working in my library, basically getting it in some kind of order, I was putting away my copies of "The Numismatist." I was in the stack from 1974 and I could not help but reread some of the articles. I found in the July 1974 issue an article by Fred Schwan. It is the earliest article that I have read about MPC replacements. The title of the article is "Military Payment Certificates-Replacements." At the time that I received this issue in the mail back in 1974 the article did not register with me, what a shame. I have now come to my senses. The article appears to be the beginning of the Replacement Survey that now is an important feature in the MPC world. I found the article informative. It shows very few notes being found and reported in 1974, if my memory is correct the reported note count at that time was in the 400 range. Quite a few of the notes that were reported were listed as CU. The article did not list the notes by serial number. I found the article interesting and recommend it to other Gramsters. Since the MPC Gram is still fairly new I thought this early article needs to be brought to everyone's attention. William Choate Dear William, Thank you for your comments. I have thought that some day I might gather up all of the survey reports that have been done and review them in one article. Indeed, that is part of the plan for the proposed MPC replacement book. Even though I have planned to do it, that does not mean that you or some other keen collector could not do it first! I hope that someone will. The point is to make the gram more interesting. In all cases confirm your order via email first. This is a modest but important collection of MPC replacements. Heck, anytime that a collection has more than twenty different, it is significant. This collection is not significant so much for how many different, but for what the pieces are. This collection includes some VERY important replacements, starting with the first one. Terms are available, please confirm availability via email fred@papermoneyworld.net. Of course the email confirmation gets the note. Series 471 50c, (SN B00488021/pos 62, plate note in MPC 4) very rare, four reported. This is the most difficult series. A great note. Listed as VG in the census, but it has claims to better. Indeed, except for some soiling on the back it clearly would be fine. It is important to look at the others in the census. They are VG, F, and F+ respectively. Furthermore, all three of those pieces are in major collections that are unlikely to come on the market for decades. This is an important chance: sold Series 521 5 cent, second printing (12 reported), great fine (SN E01088098/pos 53) $275.00 Series 521 25 cents (E00264390/34 first printing, 7 reported), VG with honest wear, all quarters are scarce to rare, $300. Series 591 5 cents (G00209786/27) F-VF $295.00. Series 591 $1 (G00256925/33) F $1750.00 Series 611 5 cents (H00089203/12) VG (condition rarity!) $75 Series 611 25 cents (H00058207//8) , only 11 of the type, rare F, attractive, $850 Series 611 $1 (H00017307/3) F-VF $150 Series 611 $10 this is a rare and important note. Furthermore, it has a good pedigree. It was in the famed DeRosa collection then in another private collection until now. In the census it is listed as fine. That is probably a reasonable description. Technically it is somewhat lower, but it looks better! It has three heavy vertical folds. The two flank folds have splits at the bottom. There is tape residue on the right side of the face (this is probably removable), but the portrait is unaffected and the note does not look bad. SN H00076907, are you ready for this? It is position number 10 thus matching the denomination! All in all a desirable note at only sold. Series 641 5 cents (first printing J00333038/42) VF, interesting SN $150 Series 641 50 cents (first printing J00534868/67) F-VF looks much better than fine $300 Series 641 $1 (first printing J00220517/28) VG with two staple holes but looks good $250 Series 661 $1 F $95.00 Series 681 5 cents VG-F $100 Series 681 $20 first printing wonderful VF $800 Series 692 5 cents EF+ $150 Series 692 10 cents AU $200 Former Kesselman Series 692 25 cents VF $285 Series 692 $10 EF, 2 pin holes $3300 WANTED SECTION: Collectors may submit lists of items wanted for their collections for listing here.
