Other dealers have reported less optimistic sales, but still have reported steady business. These reports do not include any business from Saturday which is often the busiest day of the convention (at least it is often rumored to be). Planning for the ANA Summer Seminar 2003 by Warner Talso At the summer seminar this year, there was some discussion about what to do next year. This year's success certainly translates into enthusiasm for next year. The intention of this article is to advance a proposal for next year and solicit discussion and comment. Fred and Joe have clearly given this some thought. This is basically their proposal. First, the basic course should be repeated. Each year has been more successful than the last. Out of 11 students this year, 9 were new to our madness. They may be collectors, but they had not been exposed to FEST, the Gram, etc. We had a reporter from the Numismatic News, a columnist from the Bank Note Reporter, the President of the Society of Paper Money Collectors, the project manager for the upcoming ANA MPC exhibit and a YN (Young Numismatist) on an ANA scholarship. Obviously the word on the class is spreading. And each of the aforementioned attendees is in a position to provide more publicity on the class. Second, Fred and Joe have some intriguing ideas for an advance class. Recall last year the idea for an advance class died partly because it was too difficult to define. The current idea is to have an advance class that is centered around individual student research projects. Perhaps like thesis work. There would be some class work, but the majority of the time would be spent doing research at the ANA library. Fred and Joe would act more like faculty advisors. As a finale, students would present the results of their research to the rest of the class. Perhaps a goal is to produce a publishable article. Will this work? Will it be perceived as a disadvantage because students will not get the value of day-long lectures ("face time" with instructors)? "Advanced" students do not need the structure of continuous lectures or guidance. Such students are also more apt to have pet ideas or projects they would like to pursue. The ANA library is a great resource. In past seminars, students have lamented the lack of time to spend in the library. The atmosphere, camaraderie, and association with fellow numismatists of like interest is of significant value. Just being in the summer seminar environment is stimulating and rewarding. One concept is to present the advance course in parallel to the basic course. Joe and Fred could take turns from the basic course to mentor the advance course. There could be some interaction between the two classes. Certainly if there is a pay call. Perhaps the two classes could share the same classroom - at least adjoining classrooms. So - that is a concept. Let's hear the opinions of fellow Gramarians. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Well, it is nearly 5pm and I have not been to the bourse yet or done anything else having to do with numismatics or the ANA convention. Judy and I have been on a tour. Are you a fan of Seinfeld? Over 400,000,000 people watch Seinfeld in 90 countries. I am trying to get that mailing list for the Gram, but in the mean time I will tell you about our activity for the day. Judy and I went on Kramer's Reality Tour. Kenny Kramer is the guy on whom the character Kramer in Seinfeld is based. Kenny is a great promoter. He probably should have a Seinfeld or even Kramer Fest, but instead he has a weekly Kramer's reality tour. We visited the site of the Soup Nazi and had our pictures taken in front of Tom's (the cafe often shown in the sitcom). The whole thing was a hoot! We (JAS and I) are heading out to try to make that last "big deal" at the show. Then we will go to the awards banquet. Not many deals to be done at that event--but lots of newtworking!
