From: "MPCgram" To: ; Subject: MPCGram 692 Date: Monday, August 05, 2002 1:25 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 692 -Monday 5 Aug 2002 Series 692 By Tom Koch It was an April spring day in 1996, a spring break trip to Washington D. C. with the family. We had just toured the National Archives and were leaving via the Constitution Ave. exit. On the left was a statue that I immediately recognized stemming from my recent interest in MPC. I grabbed the camera from my wife and took a picture of "The Guardian" by James Earl Fraser. This statue was the basis for the vignette on the 692 fractionals. The base of the statue has an inscription, "Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Liberty. "Why did Len Buckley, on his walks around the mall, select this piece of statuary as the basis for the 692 fractionals? It would certainly be interesting to know. Fraser is noted for other artistic (and numismatic) accomplishments. At age17, Fraser traveled to France to study under Augustus St. Gaudens. Fraser's wife, Laura, assisted him in his sculpture so certainly deserves partial credit for the work (apropos of the saying that behind every great man is a woman). He designed the Buffalo Nickel on which his initial "f" appears under the date. Probably his most notable sculpture is the "End of the Trail" which depicts a bone weary Indian riding slumped over his under-fed horse. Other works of his include the statue of Theodore Roosevelt in front of the N. Y. C. American Museum of Natural History; his statue of Hamilton which graces the Treasury Building; and in Chicago, the limestone depiction of "The Pioneers and Discoverers" on the north pylons of the Michigan Avenue bridge across the Chicago river. As an aside: The ANA Money Museum in Colorado Springs currently has an exhibit: The upper gallery features the exhibit "Proud Spirits - American Indians, Bison and U.S. Money, "inspired by James Earl Fraser, the sculptor of the buffalo/Indian head nickel that was minted from 1913 to 1938. Glass-cased exhibits showcase Fraser's contributions, and explain how America's money was influenced by its native people and animals Back to series 692: some non-collectors might disparage U. S. currency for not being as colorful or aesthetic as foreign currency. To counter this; I pull out the fractionals of the 692 and 541 to show them the bold, imaginative colors of these two series. Those series are my favorites as far as eye appeal from a purely color perspective. The 692 series vignettes of the dollar denomination and above can be characterized as "Americana" and set the stage for continuing that theme on the 701 series. The helmet, sword and lion skin on "The Guardian" has a military theme but since the statue graces the entrance of one of our great buildings on the Washington Mall, I would consider that piece to be loosely along the same theme. The face of the 692 $10.00 shows a picture of Chief Hollow Horn Bear (Matihehlogego) of the Brule/Sicangu Sioux. He was born in Sheridan County, Nebraska and in 1850 participated in Sioux raids against the Pawnee. In the Red Cloud War of 1866-68, he led attacks against U. S. Troops. Chief Hollow Horn Bear gained fame by defeating Lieutenant William Fetterman during this period. He was selected in 1899 to negotiate treaties with General Crook. His picture graces a U. S. 14 cent stamp and is one of the three Indians used for the design the back side of the buffalo nickel. He attended Theodore Roosevelt's inauguration in 1905 and in 1913 led the Indian contingent in the inaugural parade at Woodrow Wilson's. On this last visit to Washington, he caught pneumonia and died there. Additional info on the Sioux can be obtained at:. A family picture of the chief can be viewed at Chief Ouray (The Arrow) of the Ute (Apache) tribe was born in 1833. He was raised by Mexican sheepherders and fought against the Sioux and Kiowas. During this time he learned Spanish, English and several Indian languages. In 1863 he helped negotiate a treaty in which the Utes ceded all lands east of the Continental Divide. A short history of Chief Ouray can be found at: During 1868, he and his wife traveled to the nation's capital and at one point met President Ulysses S.Grant. Other denominations continue the Americana theme with items of natural beauty: dams, eagles, bison and pictures of the fairer sex. Please refer to the mpc books for additional statistical data which I havechosen not to focus on in this writing. Another excellent statistical data source on this series (and all series for that matter) isPhil Goldstein's wonderful site at: http://hometown.aol.com/IWANTMYMPC/page1.html ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Well, I wrote the missing 691 column in a motel last night.
