Actually, he and I chatted quite a bit at the ANA convention, but we did not get all of our business done. Furthermore, I had some other business to do north of NYC, so Judy and I planned a side trip to see Phil. Old time Gramsters will remember my first trip to Philland. It was in the winter in a resort area so I may have been too critical of the lack of services. I observed that in downtown Margartville the super market closed at 6pm, the dinner (known for its buns) closed at 7pm, and the library closed in September. I was looking forward to a somewhat better experience this time. Well, I had a great time. I have mentioned in the Gram that Phil and Judy conspired to get me into an upscale “inn” rather than a low cost motel, and that is very accurate, but there is more to the story. By the way “inn” is a euphemism for expensive. The place was a 1950s motel next to a stream! They put in HBO and offer “country” breakfast and presto you have an “inn.” Judy had called Phil for information on finding an upscale place near him. The place selected was in Woodstock, NY. It was nice lodging even if it was difficult to find late at night. Woodstock was interesting to visit while we waited for Phil to finish work the next day—then the real fun started. Contact by cellular phone was about impossible in the mountainous region, but we were able to get together. It was dinner time Phil suggested (insisted upon) the place. I should have known better. We set out on an expedition to find the chuck wagon. We drove through Woodstock, Bearsville, Lake Hill, Willow, Mt. Tremper, Phoenicia, Allaben, Shandaken, Big Indian, Pine Hill, Highmount, Fleischmanns, Arkville, and finally Margaretville. For Judy it was scenic, for Phil it was fun talking about local adventures, for me it was harrowing. The roads were indeed paved, but they also were narrow, windy, without shoulders, animal prone, and with little visibility. Furthermore, the friendliness of the inhabitants was far from certain and I was not sure if Phil would be a help or a handicap in this regard. We passed lots of eating establishments, but most were closed. Tuesday evening is bad for this according to Phil. A few were open, but Phil was unwilling to go into those. He criticized the food, but I suspect that it had more to do with relationships gone bad, or outstanding bar tabs. Possibly they were owned by shotgun-carrying fathers of local beauty queen mechanics. I am just not sure. Why it took all of this time to get to Margaretville I do not know. It seemed to me that that was where we were heading to start with. It was also supposed to be close to where we were staying. Remember, that was the main criteria when we got the referral on the “inn.” Driving into town I somewhat expected to see a sign “Home of Phil Goldstein MPC King,” or possibly “…CNN Star.” I thought that it was also possible that there would be a wanted poster on me as a result of my previous and comments that somehow might have been considered unkind by the city fathers. Amazing, the “buns” dinner was open, but Phil did not want to go in. He seemed nervous about that prospect so we looked for other places. Still no library to be found, but the library sign is still where I saw IT two years ago. Every eligible restaurant was closed. Finally Phil informed us that the Chinese carry out place is always open and that he really wanted Chinese anyway. As we approached the place I expected to see a hand flip the open sign in the window to closed, but we got in without difficulty. Even though the staff knew Phil, they served us anyway. The food was great too! We were entertained by a confrontation when some of Phil’s upstanding neighbors stiffed the restaurant for a bottle of iced tea. After finishing we had to drive back to the “inn.” That meant that we had to unwind the Woodstock, Bearsville, Lake Hill, Willow, Mt. Tremper, Phoenicia, Allaben, Shandaken, Big Indian, Pine Hill, Highmount, Fleischmanns, Arkville, Margaretville. For the return trip it was dark and I could not help thinking that we might be stopped by some crazed tea thieves. Back at the Inn (sounds like a sitcom in the making), Judy watched Law and Order while Phil and I looked at notes. One has to wonder if all of the above foreplay was worth the wait. It was. I only had the material that I had bought at the show and along the way, and Phil only had part of his collection, but that was plenty. We had a great time. Without doubt a highlight for me was finding a third printing replacement 521 10 cent in his collection that I needed for mine. Well, I prevailed and got it from him. It was neither cheap, nor easy, but it came home with me. I am quite sure that Phil is also happy with the trade as he received two replacements that he needed by type. We also worked out some other complicated trades that should keep us in dispute for years if not decades. Two episodes of Law and Order latter and Judy was tired of television, our inattentativeness, and (especially) our wrangling. Phil, never one to overstay his welcome, only stayed another hour or so. Of course it might be argued that I encouraged him by digging more stuff from my bag or finding a treasure to discuss in his collection. It should be clear that we had a great time. I look forward to the next visit, but I think that I might work on the accommodations myself! Phil may have equal time. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== We are dependant upon you for so many things. Indeed, virtaully everything in the Gram is because of your cooperation. The letter from Mel Steinberg below points out a bad calendar mistake. The Gram can be as good as you will help us make it. We need more questions, suggestions, criticisms, and down right complaints. They all make for a better Gram. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor, Just noticed that the IBNS London Congress is not listed in your CALENDAR OF EVENTS. There may just be a few MPC and WW2 military stuff at that important paper money event. The dates are October 5 and 6. Best, Mel Steinberg Dear Mel, Thanks for the kick in the head. Perhaps someone from London will send us the schedule for the whole week so that we can put it on the calendar.
