From: "MPCgram" To: ; Subject: MPCGram 698 Date: Sunday, August 11, 2002 7:24 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 698- Sunday 12 Aug 2002 Lawton, Oklahoma Library Features MPC If you just happen to drive through Lawton in the next month, stop in to see the MPC exhibit coordinated and created by Gramster, Fester, and barbeque leader Doug Bell. The library has a full set of MPC on display for the public to admire. The Lawton MPC network seems to be working too. The local newspaper has promised to run a story on the display and/or our Oklahoma leader. Doug reports that while he was installing the exhibit a fellow approached him and described some MPC that he brought home from overseas. Of course, Doug offered to do an appraisal a s a public service. If it happens we hope for another report. Phil's equal time: By Nicole’s friend Phil Fred's got it about right... Tuesday is a bad day for food in my area. Seems to be Tuesday is every cooks day off! What was open, were the local bars and taverns, which of course serve typical bar/tavern fare. I was looking for something with a bit more class. Unbenownst to Fred, was the fact I intended to treat him and Judy to dinner, since after all, they were in my area. I still got to buy him dinner, albeit being Moo Goo Gai Pan, and Roast Pork Fried Rice! The library is indeed in Margaretville, and is open this summer(!) but we did not make to town in time. I offered to show him WHERE is was, but Fred insisted it wasn't necessary, since anytime that he'll want to go in, it'll be closed. ( I call them to let them know he's coming!) I have to add this in my defense: Our long jaunt, in actuality only 30 miles distance wise, but made longer by Ms. Judy's request that we look at the other prospects of motel/hotel/inns she was interested in, so that added close to a 30 minute side trip. Fred seemed pleased with his accommodations, but since he feels the Woodstock Inn by the Millstream was a little high falutin' for him, I'll locate an old refrigerator box, and some old newspapers (or maybe some old MPC notes) for him to snuggle into with next time... although Fred, it could be worse: Judy and 200 square feet! Also in my defense, Fred was driving, and doing the respectable 55 mph. Locals kind of look upon that posted speed limit as a minimum speed limit, NOT a maximum as most other states residents do, and I am no exception! All in all, it was an exceptional visit by Fred and Judy, I had a great time, made out like a fat rat with two new replacements for my set, a visit with my specimen set (Fred took it back to Ohio for research and I'll get it back in a month at Strasburg), and yes with everything said, I look forward to his next visit, and even hope he stays a bit longer. The next time he does get up here though, he'll have the pleasure of staying in the Richard M. Bower Suite in my house currently under renovation. I plan on decorating the Suite (room) with vignettes off of MPC, and some fancy notes mounted in frames on the walls. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Congratulations to Doug Bell and the Lawton Public Library for their efforts to promote MPC. Doug is an old hand at this, of course, but it is a first for the LPL. It might not be long till there will be a monthly MPC meeting at the LPL! Here is a little secret. Because of security concerns on the part of LPL, the display consists entirely of the souvenir copies created and distributed by Carlson Chambliss. While there has been justifiable controversy on these items, it certainly seems that this is a perfect use for them. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Lowly Editor, Because the Calendar of Events has been so slim, I have sent the below updated list of upcoming events to you three times in the past three months but none of it has been published. And then you complain! Where can I file a letter of reprimand or Article 15 against the editor! Not all of the below events are appropriate for the Gram but you can pick out the top twelve (one for each month or so). And some of them have yet to publish their next dates in the numismatic press. The event chairmen are almost as bad the Gram editor. Well, maybe not that bad. Howard A. Daniel III Greetings Editor: Is there any reason that the major paper money show sponsored by the R.M.Smythe Co. at Lancaster/Strasburg Pennsylvania in September isn't listed in the Gram???? I'm not aware if they have any military notes in their auction, but I do know that they have a great selection of Large and Small U.S. notes and obsoletes. And of course the bourse will be attended by many of the big name dealers in paper money collecting. Dick Balbaton Doric Coins & Currency Editor, No paper money connection, but it is an article about Japanesse interment camps in the U.S. http://www.cr.nps.gov/history/online_books/anthropolgy7 4/index.htm Cheers, Mark ================================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS ================================================ 2002 Dallas Aug 21-24 National paper money and historical artifacts show at the Sheraton Grand hotel at DFW Airport.
