From: "MPCgram" To: ; Subject: MPCGram 700 Date: Tuesday, August 13, 2002 9:35 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 700- Tuesday 13 Aug 2002 More on counterfeits (and some comments on this week's grams) By Joe Boling In reference to Fred’s report about his visit to Philland (gram 697), anyone who has driven from Bowling Green to Port Clinton at night knows that Fred has no grounds to complain about roads that are "narrow, windy, without shoulders, animal prone, and with little visibility." [But definitely NOT mountainous—Ed] After mentioning the IBNS London meeting once (gram 697), it again was dropped starting in gram 698. It is 5-6 October at the Trade Union Congress hall, two blocks from the British Museum. On 4 October there will be an IBSS (Int'l Bond and Share Society) meeting at the Victory Services Club (Marble Arch), which will include lot viewing for their October mail bid sale (the sale will include Japanese WWII bonds, and undoubtedly other items of interest to gramsters). There are usually auctions by Spink's and by Phillips Son and Neale that week, but I don't have the dates for this year. I plan to attend all of these events. The St. Louis paper money show 21-24 November is also not listed in the coming events calendar. It would seem to me that anything listed in the "major shows" column of Numismatic News or featured in a display ad in BNR should not depend on reader input for insertion into the gram. For those of you who do not yet have the 4th edition of the Comprehensive Catalog of MPC, Alex Kesselman had 50 replacements, not five as reported in gram 699. I know, this was just Fred's way of making us all go flex the book's binding at a new location. And while it looked like gram 700 was going to be published Monday, it apparently was not, so I guess this column will appear in that issue. 700 isn't a usually-celebrated milestone, but it is a significant achievement (witness yesterday's comments from C. Tolek--"more than 58 years of a monthly magazine and more than 13 years for a weekly"). Congratulations, Fred and Phil. (Just who IS the editor now? Production seems to have returned to Ohio from New York.) OK, enough sniping at the gram. Ray Czahor mentioned the Smythe auction that was held the Monday before ANA in New York. I arrived in NY about 1800, too late for the sale, so I faxed bids that morning before getting on the plane (late, yes, but I only got to the catalog that night, having stacks of mail still unopened (even to this day) from the two weeks I was in Colorado Springs). I bid on five lots and got two (the ones I least needed to buy, of course). All are British white notes. Lot 3411 is a Catterns-signed 50 pound Bernhard note, 15 June 1933, 50/N 37118. As it happens, not knowing whether my bids had even been executed (they were sent so late), I bought another Catterns 50 at the ANA, same date, same block, number 54342. You would expect that there would be no differences between these, and it looks as of there are none in the printing (there are tiny differences that are probably attributable to the degree of inking of the plates). However, the watermark boards are different. All the white notes are printed on distinctively watermarked paper that includes a serial number for the individual watermark board. One of these pieces is from board F3733 and the other from G1332. Anyone else have one of these? What watermark number? The more interesting lot is 3416, described as four five-pound notes, two Bernhard counterfeits and two genuine. For starters, they are four ten-pound notes. Next, they are all fakes. Two have the watermark that I described last year, in which the curved line coming to the pediment of the N is to the left of center--way too far left, almost missing the N. The defect in the Britannia engraving that I described then is present in all four of these. The two pieces with the supposedly genuine watermarks are the same date as the piece I bought last year in Colorado--16 March 1935, block K/144, numbers 24972 and 25800. The one I already had is same date and block, 24910. All three are from the same watermark board--B0634. Now things get interesting. The other two pieces in the newly-acquired lot are dated 16 March 1935 (again) and 17 April 1935. The first is still block K/144, #61100. The April piece is K/146-64992. The March piece is still from watermark board B0634, but now the curve comes up dead center in the pediment of N! The Germans either modified that board, or created a new one with the same serial number. (The April piece is on board B0834, just one digit different.) The overall quality of the Britannia engraving is visibly inferior on the two with the left- side watermark. Last year's conjecture that they might be from Operation Andreus, a predecessor to Operation Bernhard, could be correct. Or, these could be class 3 products, the grade that the Germans used to pay informants and for other low-importance use. Bryan Burke's book mentions that Operation Andreus notes show trouble getting the ink to completely fill the broad letters of "Bank of England." While all three of the possibly-Andreus notes show this defect, so do some of the notes with the "normal" Bernhard watermark, so I can't say for sure that these three are from the earlier operation. Burke also mentions variations in UV sensitivity between genuine notes and early German copies. I find that all mine, good and bad, vary all over the block, some showing a distinct lilac appearance, others appearing to be dead, with no predictability between genuine and counterfeit pieces. Of course, I don't know what UV wavelength is used by the B of E to separate genuine notes--it may not be the one that we use for note examination today. Update--I have visited Bill Henderson looking for more examples of the CRB and FRB counterfeits described last week. He had only a half dozen examples of each CRB note, and only two of the FRB piece. No luck with any of them. Keep looking, boys and girls. I did get some other interesting Chinese fakes, but modern pieces for collectors, not WWII-vintage productions. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== We are pleased to have a new list of material in the For Sale section from Tom Kotch. We generally do not like to mention such additions elsewhere in the Gram so as to give the advantage to those who regularly check that section. Today, I want to use that list as an opportunity to promote more use of this section. I can tell you from personal experience and reports from others that Gram listings sell. The biggest advantage of all is that they (the ads) are fast. Send your ad today and it goes out today or tomorrow to hundreds of eager buyers. If it does not sell in a few days, use what ever other means that you had in mind. This is a free service to all Gramsters. The expenses are subsidized by subscriptions (the subscriptions manager does not like this as you can imagine). The For Sale section is open to collectors and dealers alike. The only requirement is that the listings be sent electronically to make it easy to paste them into the Gram.
