Turned out to be a lot more wrong with it than just the modem, so it looks like another trip to the library to meet this deadline. That means that I can't address a topic that I have to do research on as they only give me a half-hour on the computer as there are always people waiting to log on. Therefore I will have to come up with a tale from the past------- Let's go back to the summer of 1977. I was being transferred from Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio to Eglin AFB in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The first Memphis paper money show had just occurred a little over two months ago. Now as I drove south, I debated going to the ANA summer convention which was being held in Atlanta. It was hardly out of the way and I had plenty of time before my reporting date, so why not go? At that time, I was hotly pursuing my MPC set. I had a good start but still needed a number of key notes and was always looking for information on the series. Remember that at this time, Schwan hadn't yet published the First Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates. The first Pick catalog was published a couple of years before and was beginning to garner acceptance as some dealers were just beginning to use Pick numbers in their ads. The Bank Note Reporter was in it's fifth year of publishing and had moved from Florida under the reign of Grover Criswell to Camden, South Carolina under the leadership of Austin Sheheen and his brother. Fred was writing a column then known as Military Vignettes which contained a wealth of information about military notes. Much of this information has been incorporated into Schwan publications but in some cases, these columns are the only published sources of the information. Thus it was not a difficult decision to make that stop in Atlanta. I found Fred immediately and we were off and running. He naturally had something new to show me. Turned out to be a pair of Thai $10 MPC Coupons. I had never seen these before and he explained to me that a Thai soldier fighting in Viet Nam could only make a purchase in our PX/BX if he had MPC and an MPC Coupon of equal value for the item he wanted. This was an attempt to keep these allies from taking their purchases downtown and selling them on the black market for MPC and then taking that MPC back to the PX/BX for more purchases. Without the coupons, the Thai soldier could not buy additional items. Fred said that this was a new and exciting addition to MPC collecting. I had to agree, BUT the two notes he had would grade VF at best. I reminded him that I was only interested in beautiful, crisp, uncirculated notes without any flaws. My goal was to collect only the finest notes available. Both of these notes had multiple folds, minor stains and to top it off, the nicer of the two had Thai graffiti in the right edge of the face. Possibly, it was signed by the Thai soldier that used the note. Fred told me that I wasn't going to find much better examples. Consider, he said, that they were worthless if they were not used, so the individual to whom they were issued would use them quickly instead of saving them and the PX/BX would destroy them after they were used. I finally told him that I didn't care how scarce they were, "I just wouldn't have that damn scurvy looking note contaminate my pristine notes." We went round and round for the next two days. He finally wore me down and I paid him the $150 he was asking with the caveat that I would receive $150 credit on a trade-in for the next CU $10 Thai coupon that he handled. Well, guess what, twenty-five years have now passed and that note still resides in my collection. I don't know if Fred has ever handled a CU $10 Thai coupon or not. I don't remember ever seeing one and I have mellowed somewhat. There are a lot of coupons in my collection that are in worse condition than that $10 coupon and I must admit that I haven't noticed any cross-contamination of my other notes. We do keep these "lepers" in quarantine though. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== I managed to lose a few letters. I am very sorry about that. Basically, I got sloppy with file management and a little crash cost me the last copies of the letters. I have not done that in a long time. One was from George C. I do not even remember the other one or two, for which I am even more sorry. If you think that you might have had a letter lost in the past few days, another copy will be appreciated. Please be sure to check the for sale section. We expect to be adding things regularly now! Today is the last day for listing of the Tom Kotch chits. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor' I recently found a note at a street fair at a dealer's table who had lots of overpriced Jim for sale, and yet among the notes I picked out an interesting note from south Africa. It is a 10 Shilling note, P-82d, dated 10 November 1941. The note has two signatures; J. M. McLain "Napoli 2.3.44" and J.J. Walsh "Naples 2.3.44." We have all seen many signed notes from WW II, either in a short snorter or as a single well traveled note. I personally do not recall seeing any from South Africa, Most were from Asia and Europe. So who were these lads? American soldiers who found a stray note in Italy or perhaps a more reasonable explanation is that these lads were from South Africa and part of the British Forces who captured and occupied Naples on October 1st 1943. This date just four months before McLain and Walsh decided to leave their marks, see signatures, for the world. Nothing conclusive, but always an interesting premise for those Gramsters who enjoy the hunt. I will be looking a bit further into this and perhaps find Messrs. McLain and Walsh! I must tell you that Joe Boling thought I should share this with you , maybe there are others. So enjoy!
