From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 704 corrected (number only) Date: Sunday, August 18, 2002 1:22 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 704- Sunday 18 Aug 2002 D-Day H-Hour By Max Spiegel While watching a show last night on the History Channel about the Atlantic Wall and D-Day, I remembered that the thought came up at the summer seminar about what D-Day really means. Well, not soon after I thought about it, the announcer started saying a few quick facts before the commercial. It turns out that the word D-Day was first used in World War I and meant the first day of battle. It was used for the June 6th invasion because that was the first day of leaving to destroy the nazi control of France. However, some people thought that the D stood for debarkation while others said it is meaningless. According to Le Musee du Debarkment, the D stood for debarking for Normandy. While looking this up, I couldn't help but wonder what H-Hour stood for. It turns out that H-Hour also originated in World War I. It was used to signify the first hour in which the assault was to be made. The French called it l'heure so it became know to the French as H (instead of l'heure). Then the British also called it H, so the H turns out to mean hour (or l'heure). Other terms similar to these also were used for D-Day (and some were invented just for D-Day). The first, Y-Day was the day when all preparations for D-Day had to have been completed. This date was June 1, 1944. The term was later used in major assaults on Japanese controlled islands. The second term was K-Day which was the date when a convoy system was introduced on a road. However I can't find why it is K or why it is Y for either of these. I'll have to look harder. And the final term was M-Day. On M-Day, the mobilization (of troops, planes, ships, and vehicles) had to begin. This too was used mostly for D-Day. So far these are the only terms that I can find, but if there are anymore, I would like to know. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Ski’s submissions from the local library reminded me that I wanted to write about using libraries for Gram support (and other things too). First, several Grams have been created and sent from libraries (and a few other public places) around the world. Libraries provide a great service in this regard. Believe it or not, a substantial number of military money collectors do not receive email. Most often they comment/complain that they do not have computers. They also often indicate that they do not want to have a computer. They can receive their daily Gram at the public library. I have tried (hard) to recruit some of these candidates into librarygram service, but believe that I have failed. Do you know a candidate for the Gram who does not have email? Take her/him to the library and set up an email account , and get them going! Steamed Editor Dear Esteemed Editor, I am serious about the oil painting of the Series 692 $10 replacement and I now have the block/serial of E02029908. Is this a correct block/serial and/or has it been reported? The painting is about 36x18" and is still available. The past couple of days have been shopping for furniture and appliances with my wife for our townhouse. The shopping was not a nice experience but the furniture in the house looks great. For the first time, I slept in my own bedroom over here instead of a hotel room. I still have not had time to look through any MPC or anything else, but I have heard a collector here may be selling some of his MPC collection. If correct, I remember him having some great pieces. The position number for the above serial number should be 4 (I hope/assume that someone will check me on this). I do not suppose that it makes a great difference is the position number is correct or not. Also, this two million number would not be of an actual replacement. Replacement numbers would be under 400,000. Of course it would be great news to find one with a number like that.
