From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 709 Date: Friday, August 23, 2002 10:02 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 709- Saturday 25 Aug 2002 Initials on MPC By Gene Hessler This is about paper money in general, not necessarily a reference to MPCs. Yes, at least two BEP engravers signed their work: G.F.C. Smillie and Alfred Sealey. The image of Ceres on MPC 521, $10 had an "S"(millie) in the lowest button on the sleeve. However, that portion was cropped to fit the note. I 've written about this subject in PAPER MONEY and/or the IBNS Journal and elsewhere. Both Smillie and Sealey would hide an "S" in buttons and their names in lapels. G.F.C. Smillie often put his entire name in a vignette. Some souvenir cards will show this. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Doug Bell said that he would send me a fest note with barbeque sauce on it. That is little consolation for missing MPC barbeque I. I decided to console myself by going to the Strongsville (OH) Coin Show. This show has been the source of a few finds over the years. Leo May is going to be set up so there will be plenty of military money to look at, but then I went through his stuff a few weeks ago. Will probably do it again at Strasburg. Oh well. I will give a report on Strongsville, but we will have to rely upon the guys with sauce on their lips and possibly on their notes for reports for the Gram. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Esteemed Editor, I walked into the Van Dung store at 15 Le Loi this AM and the owner told me someone had been there to see me from America! It turned out to be Bill Evans, a fellow member of the Society of Indo-China Philatelists. And they said he was an old man like me and too tired to stay at the store so he was back at the Caravelle Hotel sleeping. "Old Man"!? In what little brain I have left, it is about 18 years old, so how can I be old?! I belong to this society because I also collect postal financial instruments like postal orders, postal checks, etc. I wrote an article about them in the society's journal and recommended the Van Dung store, and Bill shows up there! Great stuff! I love the power of the print and web media! We can spread around a lot of good news to many collectors and others worldwide so they can get in contact with sources and the good guys. That is all for now. My wife and I have about 24 more hours of shopping for our house here before she returns to the USA and leaves me to do my things. Howard A. Daniel III (Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com) To either editor. Militaty Currency Lives. In the Sept 2002 issue of World Coin News, columnist Richard Giedroyc, relates the use of "pogs" as small change for the military in Afghanistan. Giedroyc quotes the Army News Serivce as stating that the Armed Forces Exchange service recently started using pog-like 5, 10 and 25 cent "certificates" other than MPC or coinage. And apparantly the Main Post Exchange in Ft Lewis, WA, is accepting the pog at face value. Now there is a challenge for gramsters in that part of the world. Go, Joe [MS Bike Ride].
