From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 711 Date: Sunday, August 25, 2002 9:07 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 711- Monday 27 Aug 2002 Barbeque successful By Sam Feeback I departed my place 10 miles north of Lawton Okla , at 0530, 08-24-02 in route to Duncan Okla to transfer to Doug Bells vehicle so we could travel to Dallas to the BBQ meeting :-). I arrived at Doug’s at 0700 after stopping in Lawton for a brief breakfast and upon arrival at Doug’s, borrowed some thread and tied my glasses back together as they had fallen apart on the way too Duncan. This was a drive of approximately 35 miles or so. When I arrived at Doug’s I luckily found the screw to my glasses and while Doug drove, put them back together. We made good time and I navigated while Doug drove and we pulled into Dallas at the Sheraton Hotel at around 10:00-10:30 or so . We made a pretty good team as we drove right to the Hotel without any mistakes whatsoever, almost exactly like we knew what we were doing . A short time after walking in We saw Harold Kroll, Al Glasser, David Seelye and his girl friend . This was a very good show and i soon found myself looking at Dealers wares , whom I knew from their advertising in Coin World. I looked around the different tables until approx 12:30 when I realized Doug had gone out for the BBQ and sodas. At approximately 1300 Doug arrived and we helped him bring in the food and drink. Everyone had plenty of delicious BBQ and trimmings and after a time to eat and enjoy it, we received our pay thru Doug and Harold. Everyone enjoyed this a lot and quite a bit of trading went on immediately thereafter. Afterwards each person present , stood and told a little about themselves . This was a small informal group but seemed to be very relaxed and I think everyone had a good time. Not to start any tales about anyone :-). But Harold requisitioned one of Doug’s Challenge Coins and then had the nerve to challenge everyone else in the room. After he looked at everyone’s coin, we found out he had left his own coin outside in his vehicle, at least that was his story, I don't know if anyone ever actually saw this mysterious coin or not. And somehow Harold conveniently forgot to return the borrowed coin to Doug :-) Lyn Knight was also presented with a pay envelope that he seemed to delight in opening very slowly as everyone was gathered around to see what he received. . The people who were present at the meeting were : Doug Bell, Bruce Potter, Harold Kroll, John Cheney , David Seelye, and his gril friend , Russ Walsh, Joel Shafer, Al Glaser, Lyn Knight, and I. I would like to take this Opportunity in the Gram to Thank Doug Bell , Fred Schwan and Harold ( Coin Taker ) for helping to make this such a good time and for doing such a good job. Thank You very much, I really enjoyed this a lot and appreciate the opportunity to meet new people and form new friendships. I was able to obtain my last note while at this show , so now have finally completed my basic set :-) . And no way am I about to try to start a position set of anything :-). Doug and I departed about 1735 and after a short drive north , we fueled up and I drove back while Doug examined his recently acquired treasures, He is really making tremendous progress in his drive to put together a complete position set of fractionals and 1.00 notes. We made good time out of Dallas and back to Duncan arriving there just short of 3 hours later. Again I want to Thank Doug, Fred, and Harold for making this fun time occur and look forward to getting to see everyone again. Down Home Barbeque By John Cheney News from the front!!!!... MPC Bar-B-Q Fest and BIG TIME get together(this is TEXAS afterall!) Well, it actually came off. It was traumatic for a down home country boy from Texas like myself trying to find the Festers! It all began with David Steelye's note on his MPC sales table...we're gone NEXCT DOOR to the MPC Fest. Well this humble Texas boy went NEXT DOOR and no one was there!!! Next the staff went looking too. Lo and behold in the lobby in front of, and almost, NEXT TO the grand ballroom were a number of people examining wads of currency and discussing in low tones. I wandered (a local Texas term for cowboys) over to the table with the most folks (another local Texas term) at it and asked...Say cowpokes, do you know where the MPC Fest, Bar-B-Q, and general get down is? They said this is it! ying, I'll show you mine if you show me yours...I thought about it for a moment, as any good Texas boy would, before answering, ah, yes, MPC!!!! We adjourned from the wide-open spaces of the lobby to the room NEXT DOOR! (This reminds me very little of the way we get a round with directions here in Texas, like you turn at the fork in the road where the old Johnson place used to be, or you can't get there from here!!) I think that's the type directions Harold was getting to the hotel, did he ever make it there? A fer piece (another Texas term for the uninitiated) later we ate real Tony Roma BAR-B-Q. Now this of coarse raised the inevitable which BAR-B-Q place is best arguments, well, discussions. I heard tell (another Texas term) Dickey's, Bartley's, The Feed Store, Red Hot and Blue, and Tony Roma's. A couple of these got votes for consistency across their stores in the USA and the others for the best BAR-B-Q. Well, then the business (isn't this what we were here for) of MPC came up in passing. We had a little PAYMASTER action where some Dallas Fest money was distributed. Then there was a mad scramble for certain numbered Fest dollars. We talked about MPC and the Auction some. We did a little looking at each others collections. A program was presented by the "Other Schwan" where there were collecting remberances of a now deceased collector. A great presentation. We then adjourned, but not without some promotion of the Port Clinton Ohio NEXT FEST!! Well my overly verbose fingers have worn out on this review of the Dallas MPC Fest. I bid you a fond farewell (or as we say in Texas-Don't let the door hit you in the ___ on the way out!) Take Care till the wild bunch meets again!! ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Wow, it sure sounds like most of us missed a great even in Dallas. From the reviews, my guess is that Doug will hold it again next year. I will certainly do my best to be there! I should have thought before the Q that Amon Carter, Jr., possibly the most prominent Dallas numismatist ever, was a keen MPC collector. He had a great regular issue collection, replacements and lots more. Neil Shafer has written about Amon at various times for the BNR. Neil, how about digging out those articles, polishing them a little (smile), and sending them to your Gram! Just in through the either, Doug Bell’s Report on QI. It will appear in the Tue Gram. Other reports are also wanted! Box 20173 Atlanta, GA 30325 Note to Bob Unger-The 661 $5 is rather common and I have about 60 in UNC many with consecutive serial numbers. I will check to see how my serial numbers relate to you but it is not unusual to find small and sometimes large hoards available. I just purchased 28 notes in each denomination .05-1.00 in what I believe are GEM from Series 692. Bill McNease Dear Editor Fred, I missed you at Strongsville but "Secret Agent Spy Sue" said she saw you fly into the show just as we were leaving the hotel. I left all the MPC and military items for you to purchase so I guess I do not have anything for you! ! !
