Sam Feeback completed his basic set with a 541 5$ that he obtained from David Seelye. I saw a 541 $5 there that the sn# ended in 05 and matched the denomination. I don't know anyone doing this matching as of yet. That particular note is a tough note to find. I was able to acquire about 80 notes for my master set. Completing the 641 series from 5 cent through 10$ and putting me within 85 notes of having 2/3 of all fractionals and $1 notes--3307 to date. Had a great time and am looking forward to next year. Biling’s In Box By Joe Boling Monday I received from Australia, from long-time SB-contributor Patrick Varne, photocopies of some neat stuff he has acquired from the estate of a former German soldier who kicked around France, Germany, the eastern Front, and then the Afrika Korps before being captured by the French, eventually to be handed over to the Americans. He was imprisoned at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland, until 1946. Seven years after repatriation, he emigrated to Australia. There is a chit from Edgewood in the materials that Pat sent copies of. It is deep red with black lettering (so dark red that the photocopy is almost illegible, but Pat wrote out the legends next to the black blob): P. W. CANTEEN/Edgewood Arsenal, Md./No. 3693/NOT GOOD IF DETACHED. There is a box on the right end with 10/CENTS. The whole chit measures 57x24mm, with the box taking the rightmost 18mm. Ski, is this a new report? Edgewood is not in Campbell or SB. (All measurements premised on the photocopies being at 100%.) Patrick has a ton of stuff from this fellow. Other items he sent copies of include a Thanksgiving dinner menu (1944) from the EM division of the Chemical School at Edgewood; the guy's Wehrmacht paybook; a trusty pass ("to and from work without a guard"); a visitor's map of Edgewood; photographs; a color photocopy of a diploma attesting to the prisoner's graduation from a course in American history with a grade of B (crossed 48-star flags in living color); and a very interesting small (78x38) second pass. This piece is titled "AIR RAID PASS." It says "Permit bearer to enter the theatre within one /1/ week after the Air Raid." Signed "T G Hall/Theatre Officer." (The slashes are in the text in this case, not used to show line breaks in the text.) The whole thing appears to be mimeographed, with Hall's signature in the stencil master. Now, what does that text mean? What earthly connection is there between an air raid (of which there were none in the US) and going to the camp theater? A note about dark photocopies. I have found that it is very helpful to hold dark copies up to a strong light. The details become quite visible. In the case of the chit mentioned above, all the text is very legible that way, even though sitting on the desk it appears to be a solid mass of black. I recently was examining a photocopy of a raised note. When held to the light, the edges of the counters that had been appliqued to the note became very obvious; sitting on the desk you could not tell that there was any alteration (remember, this was a photocopy, not the original piece). Hold those dark copies up to a light; you'll see more in them. Patrick has also (earlier) sent color photocopies of two envelopes (one with US postage, the other with Australian) that traveled between US HQ elements within Australia during the war. Perhaps they will be the topic of a future column. I ran into Ray Bows at a local show here Saturday (shopping, not selling). He has retired from Massachusetts to Florida, but is traveling in his RV more often than not. You can reach him at namlore@hotmail.com; he logs on in libraries as he travels, so don't expect an instant response. (Seattle libraries are all closed this week, and the week of 16 December, as a cost cutting measure. Staff members aren't just getting a week off--they are losing a week's pay. Yuk.) Finally, I acquired another position 8 piece this week, the example replacement I had been wanting to acquire, just to have a representative piece of that variety (I also have an evidence note as a representative piece). As it happens, the new replacement it is also a piece I did not have yet, a 692 dime. It's a clean but well-used piece. I had to chuckle at the price on the invoice (from Steamed Editor)--$88.88. I STOLE IT! Organizer’s Report--BBQFest I By Doug Bell I feel the Lyn Knight show was a great success. To start off with there were almost as many people as the first mpc fest present. (WOW) For a mini-fest that is great. We had 3 new attendees: Joel Shafer, John Cheney, and David Seelye's friend. It took me 1 hour to acquire our meals from Tony Roma's BBQ which was about 10 minutes away. They had to cook it 20 minutes before they would let me have it, but it was really good. We were allotted the meeting room for 1 hour so we started the bbq as soon as it arrived. Harold and I served as paymasters and as festers were finishing up the BBQ, we started paying. Lyn Knight was busy hosting the paper money show so he wasn't able to attend our fest, but he did receive a partial pay, and every fester was huddled around him while he slowly revealed his sn# of the notes he had received in his packet--3 stars in sequence. Russ and I sorted the notes and shuffled the notes 3 times before the envelopes were stuffed with pay and training money. Maybe Russ with his analytical mind can explain the chances of that happening. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Obviously MPC collectors in general and Festers in particular had a great time in Dallas. With every passing moment, I regret more that I was not there! As they say in sports, wait till next year. One of the interesting things , especially from my point of view, is the number of BBQ participants who have taken the time to send a report, letter, or comment (no complaints ). The percentage must be the highest ever in numismatics. I can only think of two BBQers who have not sent a report, and I am still hopeful on them (hint, hint). Look for more BBQreports tomorrow. For the second week in a row, I had trouble receiving Boling’s column at my personal mail box fredschwan@yahoo.com. I have received other things and he did not get a bounce message, but the column did not arrive. I am uncertain of the problem. If anyone has an idea, we would like to hear it. Beyond that, it is probably best to send all email for me to the Gram. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear 'Gramsters, I've been an active collector of numisma since 1959, I got the bug when my best friend's Dad's eyes bugged out when he realized that my family's heirloom coin (all families have at least one...), an old dollar, was an 1889-CC. 'Nuf said. In all that time I have NEVER known a group as entertaining and informative as the 'Gramsters. No Full Step nickle freaks, no MS-67.2348194539 dementos, no 'cent vs. penny' screamers, no 'Nationals-with-Red-Seal-and-serial-Number-1-with-ink-smears' nutsoids, no one in numismatics seems to have as much fun as the 'Gramsters do. Now I know that finding something valuable in a $$$ way is good (you should have seen me when I found a 1941 Panama 20-Balboa proof note...)and it is somewhat of a motivator; however, for shear joy of collecting nothing seems to beat the folks involved with MPC and all its permutations (aside: anybody got an extra set of Afgani pogs??). PLEASE DON'T EVER LOSE THIS ENTHUSIASM!!!! Thanks for all the fun! Jay in Garrison, TX Dear Jay, Your comments are VERY much appreciated, but your timing has never been good. I just checked the company roster from the barbeque and do not see your name. I think that our eccentricity is not in doubt. Hope to see you at an MPC event soon. Editor Dear Editor, Angelos is the best BBQ in the country!!! It is in Ft Worth and the beer is so cold that ice flakes float on top!! Nick Dear Gramsters, Our new Fixed Price List 32D is now up and available for viewing on our web site. You can go directly to the list at http://www.rosenblumcoins.com/pricelists/list32d.html. This list has no pictures although our picture policy is stated on the front page of the list. There are lots of nice coins, tokens and medals offered and we hope you find something of interest. We'll be in the office starting Monday morning, but orders will be filled in order received, so if you see something you want, please reserve quickly. We've been told that there has been some problems with our email lately so if your message doesn't get through on one of email addresses, please try the other. wmrcoins@qadas.com or bill@rosenblumcoins.com. Thanks, Bill Rosenblum Dear Gramsters, Think someone can come up with a list or chart of all the Fest money, replacements, errors, etc.? All I have is the Fest II series of "regular issue".
