From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 715 (makeup) Date: Wednesday, September 04, 2002 7:25 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 715 - Friday 30 Aug Amon the Great By Neil Shafer Well, the comment in a Gram editorial about Amon Carter and the articles I have written about him in BNR stirred me to respond, as he was just a tremendous personality on our field. While I do not possess any of the earlier articles, I can tell you what they covered. Any I do happen to have would date from around 1995 onward as I began to save them on my computer from then to now. A bit of background on my first meeting up with him. It was in 1960 at one of the major conventions, probably held in DC. I was living in that area at the time and had developed a very strong interest in PI numismatics, especially those parts having to do with the United States. This interest included both coins and paper money, and I did a lot of research at the National Archives and the Bureau of Engraving, all of which resulted in a book each on the coins and notes. These were published by Western (Whitman Publishing) in Racine, WI. in 1961 and 1964, respectively. It developed that Amon had a very strong interest in both of these PI areas as well, so we had a great meeting where we went over a lot of points having to do with the collecting of thse items. Our friendship became stronger through the years, and we also did some trading back and forth. He was also strongly interested in military notes, including MPC. In fact, Amon ended up with my fully uncirculated MPC $5.00 Series 471 that I had obtained from the Jim Wade Collection (along with a lot of other military and related notes) in the late 1960s. The price was a record for any MPC note up to that time- (believe me, it would bring a lot more now!). He also had a huge boxful of AMC that had come out of Europe somehow. With all the contacts he could have had, this should not come as a surprise to any of us. Actually, though I am sure he had some terrific individual items, I do not really recall anything terribly outstanding about his MPC collection except that it all seemed to be in high grade. But nothing specific stands out in my memory. Now as to the times I wrote articles about him in the BNR, they started out with a two-part series in September and October of 1988. I called these articles "Carrying the Torch" as they had to do with the time I spent with Johnny Rowe in a locked bank vault in Ft. Worth going through his entire world paper money collection for tax purposes in 1983. Johnny was doing the US material while I was engaged with the fantastic world group. It just carried you through every day, so wonderful was the collection, that you never felt tired or unwilling to do a lot more the next day. We worked all day, and every evening I wrote a synopsis of what I had seen that day along with anything else of more than passing interest. This diary was the basis for those two articles. The Note of the Month illustrations for them were two outstanding rarities, a Banco Herediano 25 pesos of 1886 from Costa Rica (#S185) and a $1.00 1881 from the Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, London and China, issued at Shanghai and payable in "One Clean Mexican Dollar" (#S225). This last was one of Amon's very favorite notes because of its reference to a "clean" Mexican dollar. Both notes are illustrated in Vol. 1 of the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money. The next time I brought his name into a BNR article was for June, 1992 unde the title of "Memphis stirs memories of Amon G. carter, Jr." This time I discussed a new book called, simply, "Amon." It was mostly about his flamboyant father, but he was also included. I believe one of the stories was concerned with his capture by the Germans during World War II and being a P.O.W. several years, finally being released partly through the influence of his father (I may be wrong on this as I don't have the book at hand, but I think this was part of it). Call this Part I- I will fo part II right away. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Everyone is doing a GREAT job of sending good stuff to the Gram. Or is every doing a good job of sending great stuff? In either case it is exciting for the hobby and a pleasure for me. Tomorrow we will have a special list of MPC available from Vietnam. See Howard Daniel’s letter below. This weekend will be a little bit of a test, because I will be out of town on a social (gad) trip. I am not sure what internet access I will have so the Grams may be a little mixed up (is that a change?) Actually, this makes it even more important for you to send a letter, complaint, or whatever so that we can create a Gram on the spur of the moment at a local pub. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gramsters, Just a note to the Ebay bidders on the collection of 641, 661, 681 and 692 notes that did not sell. I viewed the notes today and can verify that the entire lot is in UNC. A big however, there is a lot of foxing on most of the notes and they do not generally have a good appearance. The owner of the notes is unreasonable in the asking prices for the lot but I held them in my hands and looked over each and every note. Any questions on the notes just let me know. Bill McNease Dear Editor, Another quick aside, this on military games notes. Thought you might like to know of these. I did two articles on these in the Sept. and Oct. 1999 BNR, with some replies that appeared in Feb. and April of 2000. Neil Dear Steamed Editor, Gramsters who are IBNS members have one more day to get their bids in on auction 59. This is a 4581-lot sale! There are MANY military pieces in it. (But don’t you dare outbid me on the ones I’m looking for.) Joe Dear Joe and Gramsters, Thanks for the tip. Possibly Gramsters who are not IBNS members will consider this a wake up call to join! Contact joeboling@aol.com for more info on IBNS membership. Steamed Editor Dear Esteemed Editor, Here is the list of MPC for sale in Vietnam that I mentioned in my report number five. All of the pieces were found in Viet Nam, and I quickly looked at and graded them. Everyone who knows my grading says it is always too low, so please take that into consideration. As I have time, I will look at it again to look for any imperfections. His asking price for all of the above MPC is $2000 to the first offer, but there is a little negotiating room if there is no offer at his asking price. The reason he is selling is because the government just gave him some land to replace what was taken from him several years ago and he will be building a house on it. If he cannot sell it at what he believes it to be worth, he will keep it and continue to add to and improve it. All of the Series 692 in the MPC Collection are being made into large oil paintings for me to return with to the USA. The four cents pieces will be in one painting and there will be one painting for each of the dollar pieces. Each framed painting is available at $100. each and the $10. is already sold. Howard Dear Howard, The list will be run tomorrow (Saturday) giving everyone an even chance at the group. I will be out of town making it a little bit difficult, but I will try to arrange for the list to go out at noon eastern time. That is NOT a promise.
