Here are details reported by Howard: All of the pieces were found in Viet Nam, and I quickly looked at and graded them. Everyone who knows my grading says it is always too low, so please take that into consideration. As I have time, I will look at it again to look for any imperfections. His asking price for all of the above MPC is $2000 to the first offer, but there is a little negotiating room if there is no offer at his asking price. The reason he is selling is because the government just gave him some land to replace what was taken from him several years ago and he will be building a house on it. If he cannot sell it at what he believes it to be worth, he will keep it and continue to add to and improve it. It was my rookie experience at a Fest event-quite enjoyable. I managed to make a few serial number trades from my pay envelope. Marvin Mericle forwarded information to me regarding his collecting experiences and I relayed this to the group. More on this will follow as we get closer to auction time. The editor referred to my father's experiences with Amon Carter, Jr. I wanted to add a few words about Amon from my own perspective as a young man. I was still in high school when Amon passed away in 1982, so I did not really conduct any business with him. At the time, it was obvious to me how much respect my father had for Amon. Whenever I saw Amon (he came to our home once, so this was usually at shows), he was a larger than life figure to me. What I did not understand then is that he was also larger than life to his contemporaries. Since his passing, I have become acutely aware of his extraordinary position in the hobby. In my mind, he has garnered the most universal and deepest respect of anyone I have met in the field. Of course, he had some wonderful bank notes. Lyn Knight Currency Auctions has been fortunate enough to handle a few of these pieces. If someone wants a piece with top pedigree, it would be an Amon note. I do remember Amon emphatically not liking any bank notes that he could not read. I look forward to reading more comments about Amon. Joel Shafer Dear Editor, Another quick aside, this on military games notes. Thought you might like to know of these. I did two articles on these in the Sept. and Oct. 1999 BNR, with some replies that appeared in Feb. and April of 2000. Neil Dear Editor, I enjoyed the writing by David Kinger on the specimen books. There is one aspect that strikes me as strange. What are items marked "confidential" doing in a museum? I thought the concept behind a museum was to show items to the public, not secure them from the public. I went back to my June 2000 edition of the banknote reporter. The MPC article indicates that Marv Mericle described specimen booklets and positive impressions of 691 and 701 held in a government archive. Did Mr. Mericle get to see the confidential sets at Fort Jackson? Someting smells fishy. Al Babb Dear Esteemed Editor, Yesterday, I was at Mrs. Phuong's shop near the central market on Le Loi to pickup my purchases. Her prices to me were excellent and I accepted all of the material and paid her. Just before I am prepared to leave, she says MPC. So I have to stop and look at the miserable stuff. There were seven Series 692 $20 pieces in Fine to Very Fine condition, but with staple holes. When I got to the last piece, it had "$140" written on it. The seven pieces belonged together! I do not know what price she has on them, but the serials and print postions are E00740955E 43, E00569667E 22, E03505551E 39, E03815781E 27, E03596073E 50, E03410906E 27 and E01807257E 26. She also had Series 641 5C J00771820J 12 in VF, 10C J04198677J 21 in VF, and a $1 J01790693J 14 in F+. And the US Navy spoons and forks! One side is stamped USN and the other has the anchor. They are silver or silverplate and there are two forks sizes and three spoons sizes. Are there any gobs out there interested in them.
